Fans flock to new store
4:42pm Tuesday 20th March 2012 in Wembley 2012
A STORE which opened specially for Swindon Town’s trip to Wembley has sold more than 1,000 Swindon Town souvenir T-shirts in just two weeks.
The Swindon Town store in the Brunel Centre has seen hundreds of fans flock to buy its Paolo Di Canio and Wembley tops, seeing 1,400 fly off its shelves in the fortnight it has been open.
Sales assistant Melissa Thornton, who is going to Wembley to watch the match, said that Saturday had been the store’s busiest day yet.
“We can’t get the stock out quick enough,” she said.
“We sold out of all sizes in the Paolo shirts. We also did 100 limited edition green T-shirts in the same colour that Paolo wears and they are completely sold out now. It has been crazy.
“We sold at least 100 t shirts by lunchtime on Saturday, it was busy as soon as we opened. Everybody is just going mad for Swindon Town. It’s people you don’t usually get buying it as well, wives and girlfriends are buying it for their partners. It’s not just your typical Swindon Town fans.”
Swindon Town foam fingers have sold out and staff at the store were keeping on top of replenishing the stock on Saturday.
“We always talk about Wembley with the customers. They say they can’t wait, everybody is so excited for it and everybody is wanting a T-shirt,” she said.
The store will be giving fans the chance to touch the trophy and meet some of the players at 4pm on Thursday.
Sales assistant Dan Welch said: “Buying Swindon Town merchandise from here and the shop at the County Ground helps the club.
“Unfortunately, like everything, you get the touts at Wembley but none of that money helps Swindon Town.
“We would rather they were going to Wembley with the official merchandise.
“The whole town wants to be behind them. I personally didn’t think it would be like this at all. Everybody is really gearing up for it.
“I work in the store at the County Ground and this store is not taking away from the trade there.”
Souvenir scarves, foam trophies, car flags and large flags are also on sale at the shop.
The store is open from 9am until 5.30pm until it closes at the end of the day on March 24. It will not be open on match day.
