SWINDON TOWN: Caddis wants extra effort against Brighton
6:00am Friday 10th August 2012 in Sport By Andy Warren
Town skipper Paul Caddis
SKIPPER Paul Caddis believes Swindon Town need to find an extra gear if they are to get anything from Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash with Brighton.
Town suffered their first defeat of pre-season on Wednesday as they went down 1-0 at the hands of Crystal Palace, and while they performed well in patches, Caddis still believes they find an extra 20 per-cent before the game with Championship opposition.
“Percentage-wise the first half against Palace was 80 or 85 per cent but then in the second half we dropped a bit, and that is normal for pre-season because you are just trying to get the feel of things,” he said.
“For the game against Brighton we will go back and do a few days of training and some more tactical work, and if we do that then I think we will be fine.
“We want to make a good account of ourselves against Brighton, even though they will probably have most of the ball, because we want to show our potential and it is all about the result.
“If we play to our best and they don’t play as well as they should do we can win the game, but we are just looking forward to it now.”
Town started Wednesday’s friendly quickly before fading in the second half, but Caddis still believes there are plenty of positives to take from the game.
“The gaffer has spoken to us about that, but I am not sure what it is because the first half performances have just seemed to be that much better,” he said.
“During pre-season that can be normal, even though it shouldn’t be, but the more competitive games we have the better that will be.
“It was good to get a proper game against a league side, and even though they are from the league above I felt we held our own, and more.
“On another day one of our chances could have gone in and we would have won the game, and we know we can do that because we have quality players. We have Matt on one side and Robbo on the other, and we always know we are going to get something from them.
“There were times where we were amazing, but we still conceded even though we felt Wes touched the ball.
The Scot has been struggling with injury during pre-season, but is feeling fine now ahead of the big kick-off.
“I am fine now and feeling fully fit, and I caught up with all the running and I am now ready to go,” he said.
“I have had plenty of games too, and even though it might take a few more for me to be fully fit, I can’t wait to get started.”

Don, I agree, we got away with murder last year and nobody expects a top class finisher in League Two. League One is a completely different proposition however and while Benson will continue to shine he needs a partner who can finish, and sadly Williams isn't that man yet. Hitting the woodwork does not rack up points in the League table, similarly Ritchie needs to be more focused with his final ball, his free kick against Palace was a perfect example. Not being negative but we still need that player with the touch of Austin/Cox and diCanio knows that. The Benson thing has gone all quiet without comment from the club, so it would be nice to think that talks are still ongoing. Anybody know where Kitson went from Pompey, I did hear a whisper that we were talking to his agent a couple of weeks back, perhaps his wages are still high but he is 32 so maybe he would come here, I dunno, a brilliant signing though.
However as I said yesterday , where do you play him ? Paolo sees him as a second striker so the high goals ratio won't come from him and if you play him in midfield who would you leave out Ferry , Miller ?
To be honest IMHO Bostock won't add anything to this team, it's a 20 + striker thats is important.

steve brentford and jam 1, both spot on. better to get missed chances out of the way now and save the goals for the games that matter. as for bostock if you know your footy you know a class act when you see one, and when he was fit bostock looked like the next big thing that spurs thought he was going to be. i hope he comes to us permanently or on loan.

Why don't you wait until at least 10 Div 1 games and then make this point.
As if you have seen enough already to make such judgement.
For me I have seen the forwards holding the ball well, running into channels and finding space from yes a few friendlies.
Enough to keep me happy.
Goals I am sure will come.......Relax we are going to have another good season.
Get over Connell and remember the open goals missed at Wimbledon away and Rovers at home just a few examples. I for one are not slagging off Connell as he done well for us but get it into perspective and move on.
How many goals has Connell scored in Division 1 ? - Now put your trust and support into the new boys and you know it might just work out for you !!

If we were to lose him through injury not sure if Paolo would play Devera or Thompson as a replacement, but let's hope it doesn't come down to any forced changes.
Don't think he's the right guy to be taking all the free kicks on the edge of the area either, he doesn't seem to get enough dip on it to keep it down. I know he likes to grab the ball in such situations and he did score a good one last season from a free kiock, but surely we have others in the team that bend it like Beckham, Lol!

Really dont see a problem with scoring goals myself , and a few of you out there need to stop panicking , ok so we lacked a bit in front of goal against palace , but were not going to come up against qualitity sides like that in div 1. Can still see us being one of the leagues top scoring sides next season. Keep the faith !

However his goalscoring talents have yet to materialise so far on his C.V.
In 31 League games he has scored only 4 goals, and in 40 England U16,U17 & U19 games hes has managed only 2 goals.
As a midfielder this record is not unusual, but why are we so sure that he will get goals if he comes to us and plays behind the striker ?

In the 2 friendlies I have seen, I feel the lack of pace up front maybe the biggest issue, only when Storey came on against Marine did we really worry their defence. I doubt though whether PdC see's him as a potential 1st choice striker.

the don69 wrote:Bit of a contradiction here - you're saying there's no guarantee that Williams will score goals for us just cause he netted a fair few last season, and that goes for any player - then go on to suggest some examples of players who would definitely score for us as they have in the past. What's the odds they'd do so well if they returned? Austin was scoring on average in excess of a goal every two games for us. For Burnley his record is just over one in three. Yes, he finished up as their top scorer but at a higher level he's not as prolific. Similarly Cox got more than a goal every two games for us, but has a woeful record at West Brom. Williams is proven at league 1 level, so every indication would be if he can score for Yeovil he can score for us.
Yes Steve is right must have a little patience with the new guys, but just because a player scores a few last season,is no guarantee he can repeat it the next!the bees fans had that problem with Donaldson, who banged in over 30 for Crewe, but at Brentford he couldn't hit the ol Barn door!agree with Mike,Coxy or bad boy Charlie would bang a hatfull in for Paolo!!!!!!!
Also, if you say there's no guarantee a player will get you goals (and there isn't) based on previous form, what do you base your decision on to sign them? And who do you sign?
Bottom line is you never know if it'll work out with a player, but the best indication is their form. The argument that Williams got goals for Yeovil but may not for us really isn't that helpful.

In 1966 Alf Ramsey changed football forever when he changed from the W 2-3-5 formation to 4-4-2, England were called the wingless wonders and it won us the world cup.
Sadly everyone else caught up and overtook us . Now Spain play & win without a striker and soon the world will follow.
Out and out strikers are not being developed anymore , maybe it's a good thing. Evolution ! lets lead the race here at Swindon.

I need your expert analysis of this, because |I'm about to go completely off-subject.
With the Olympics and penalty shoot-outs still fresh in most of our heads (je pense), it's cheesing me off (more and more) that the letter of the law is seldom applied to penalty taking.
As I understand it, the goalkeeper is supposed to stand on the goal line and is not allowed to move until the ball is kicked. (Is that right?)
Nowadays, a false-start in Olympic competition, means that a competitor has moved within 0.1 seconds before the gun (on the assumption that the human brain cannot react faster).
If this were applied to penalties (and we do have the technology(. How many "brilliant saves", would be deemed illegal?

Theoretically, the ball would be passed them before they had time to react. Unless the ball is hit straight at them.

Friendly games are no guide to how a teams season is going to pan out and id rather the players got all the rustiness out the way in friendlies and when chances came in the league games they just popped them in the net. pre-season games is just about getting fit and getting the sharpness back and it takes most players a good 5 or 6 games to get their game back on track. Im not worried at all that the strikers didnt score against Palace in fact it probably better we did lose and missed a few chances so at least it tells them they need to be sharper for next week otherwise we will get the same result.
Connell was well liked at CG but he has gone. Mistake ? We will never know but should move on.
Off subject, I have not posted for a while due to watching Olympic football (7 games, Men and Women). Visited Cardiff, Coventry and Wembley over the past couple of weeks and have to say that Cardiff is the best to watch a match. For future reference, I discovered Hatch End as an ideal place to park after Stanmore (where I used to work) was full when we arrived (4 hours before kick-off). The Station Car Park is small but hardly used costs £4.00, is 20 minutes from the M40/M25 and only 6 stops from Wembley Central with no queues after the game !!!!,
Many may not be interested in Olympic football but it has been a real eye-opener, being part of record crowd at Wembley for the Women's final was amazing and the Bronze Medal match I have just returned from was superb, Paolo should have a look at the Korean Striker who scored the 2nd :-).
One positive I can see from the games is the number of families that attended and enjoyed the games, many were possibly their first live game, and I hope these people will want to go again and as a result go and see their local teams.
Now looking forward to Proper football i.e. Town playing and can't wait for the season opener against Brighton.

What tripe on here today, I have been impressed with both Williams (even before he signed for us) and collins, both move well, both run the line, both can hold the ball and lay it off and both are getting into the positions they need to be in to score goals. I am pretty certain that both will score goals this season, oh and Williams was a free and collins a tribunal fee yet to be set.... Not bad business in my book, we could have paid 500k for Mcdonald or someone like that with no guarantee of goals...
What next are people going to write off Sir Wes for conceding a penalty the other night?

Was at Cardiff for the fateful penalty shoot-out :-(
On penalties, I think the keeper can now move along the goal line before the kick is taken, what he can't do is move forward before it is kicked. Happy to be corrected however.

Was sat by a group of South Korean's, they had a good evening, took plenty of pictures, bought plenty of merch, had a sing-song, enjoyed their tray of steak pies and round of waters one of the group brought up, and got those round them into the spirit. Excellent stuff.

Firstly what a load of sh1te being posted on here. Lack of goals? I think you should review last seasons friendly games . Missing Conell? Do me a favour. Fact is (and I've watched 3 of the friendly games) we've torn sides apart including palace at times and make no mistake they're a decent side. We will score goals no doubt.
My biggest concern is Paolo ’s seemingly opinion that Henville is a better defender than either Flint or Devera, how this glaring mistake is being overlooked by everyone is beyond me. You cannot change a back 4 which had the best defensive rate bar man city last season. My concern is not scoring goals, it's conceding them. I don't like Henville one little bit. He lost the first 4 headers against palace on Tuesday night and put the side in trouble in every occasion. We all know Flint would have won all 4and relieved the pressure instantly.
I think we're looking OK. Miller and Navarro aren't as good as I hoped and I can see another midfielder coming in shortly after the season starts. As per normal, watch this space..

Was impressed with the vocal support for Korea last night. Surprised that the Japanese were so quiet as they made most of the noise at the Women's final on Thursday.
I haven't heard many Boos at the matches but the whole of Wembley booed in unison when Sepp Blatter was introduced as a medal presenter :-)
Old Grey,
We have watched a fair bit of Women's football recently due to having football loving daughters and you are spot on. Great atmosphere at the games and sensibly priced (£3 to watch the FA Cup Final !). Thought the Japanese were a bit fortunate to get to the final but I was very impressed with the their perfomance on Thursday. The US keeper had a superb game, my player of the match, and IMO won the match for them.
Bring on Brighton !

Wiz,
I need your expert analysis of this, because |I'm about to go completely off-subject.

Why don't you wait until at least 10 Div 1 games and then make this point.
As if you have seen enough already to make such judgement.
For me I have seen the forwards holding the ball well, running into channels and finding space from yes a few friendlies.
Enough to keep me happy.
Goals I am sure will come.......Relax we are going to have another good season.
Get over Connell and remember the open goals missed at Wimbledon away and Rovers at home just a few examples. I for one are not slagging off Connell as he done well for us but get it into perspective and move on.

I have other doubts also but I think we need to give it a month or so and give everyone a fair crack of the whip before completely writing them off.
If we are going to play 4-4-2 ( and I think thats a cert, at least to begin with) then we do need another striker.
I think it's going to be an interesting season and not as straightforward as some people think.
Still, fingers crossed.

Caddis and Macca have other attributes, heading the ball is their weakest skill.
If we play Macca at centre back, the other centre back doesn't need to worry about tricks and pin-point passes, just clear the ball, and pass it either side to those who can.
Paolo is clearly leaning towards Troy and Macca judging by pre-season, time will tell if that is a good choice.
Flint plus one for me.

In my eyes at least one any teams back four should be good enough to win 90% of headers, ie Flint. Caddis and Macca have other attributes, heading the ball is their weakest skill.
