  • "By the way, I think there may a piece on us on the FL show tonight. Looked like they were filming there today. It will be great entertainment if they show a particular one of PDC's performances where he was showing how it should be done, complete with final high kick at an imaginary ball."

FULL TIME: Town 2 Accrington 0

Paul Benson scores his first Paul Benson scores his first

TWO first-half goals by Paul Benson were enough to secure all three points for Swindon against Accrington today as Town sealed a 2-0 win to remain top of League Two.

Benson scored in the eighth and 30th minutes to put the Robins firmly in control as they secured a club record ninth successive league victory.

Here are the key moments from today’s game:

One min: Good chance for Town inside the first minute when Alan Connell latches onto a long ball up field before passing to Benson, who races into the area and clips a pass back to Connell. The striker turns to flick a shot towards goal but Peter Murphy clears off the line.

Eight mins (GOAL, Benson 1-0): The Robins don’t have to wait long to take the lead as Luke Rooney superbly brings down a high ball into the area before turning and whipping a dangerous cross that Benson meets to smash a header off the underside of the goal and into the back of the net.

22 mins: Bit of a scare for Town as Accrington have a couple of chances to draw level. First, Wes Foderingham does well to palm a Kevin McIntyre free kick behind for a corner, from which the Swindon keeper has to be alert to deny Padraig Amond’s clever backheel.

23 mins: The visitors come within inches of scoring a leveller when Amond glances a header that strikes the base of the upright before bouncing clear.

25 mins: Play quickly swings back to the other end of the pitch as this time Matt Ritchie smashes a long-range effort against the crossbar before Rooney’s follow up is denied by Nicholls.

30 mins (GOAL, Benson 2-0): Swindon are well on the way to a ninth successive League Two win when a defensive mistake sees Benson receive the ball in the middle of the area and the in-form striker makes no mistake, sweeping a shot beyond Nicholls.

57 mins: Benson has a chance to score his and Swindon’s third when visiting keeper Nicholls is left In no mans land when he races off his line but is beaten to the ball by substitute Ronan Murray, who lays the ball off for Benson but the striker shoots over.

72 mins: Michael Smith fires over for the visitors from the edge of the area after Accrington enjoy a good spell of possession.

80 mins: Benson attempts to cushion a header for Murray inside the box but it is too high for the young Irishman. Benson was perhaps better placed to try for a third.

92 mins: Nicholls does well to prevent Swindon from grabbing a late third when he first denied substitute Raffa De Vita and then pushed Ritchie’s follow up behind.

TOWN (4-4-2): Wes Foderingham; Paul Caddis, Joe Devera, Alan McCormack, Callum Kennedy; Matt Ritchie, Simon Ferry (Lee Cox, 69), Oliver Risser, Luke Rooney (Raffa De Vita, 86); Alan Connell (Ronan Murray, 55), Paul Benson.

Subs: Alessandro Cibocchi, Billy Bodin
