The heat is on, says Don
DON Rogers has warned Town boss Maurice Malpas the pressure will be on next season - as a packed County Ground finally start to raise their expectations.
The Swindon legend has hailed the new regime's season ticket initiative, where they are offering the chance of football for less than £10, but knows bigger crowds mean higher expectancy.
Rogers though is confident Malpas's class of 2008/09 can cope with the wave of optimism spreading through the town, claiming the good times are returning to Wiltshire after a forgettable last decade.
The new season ticket pricing scheme was launched at the County Ground yesterday, with a queue of people waiting for the box office to open, and Rogers believes the price slash can finally bring fans flocking back.
He said: "I think the more people you can get in the ground, the players will respond to it, but that does put a lot of pressure on the management. Everyone expects us to do well now because the mood has changed around the club.
"It works both ways, the more people we get, the more money the manager will get to spend and the more pressure will be on. I am sure he is looking forward to it though because there is such optimism.
"I am sure there are good times ahead. I am positive Swindon are going to go from strength to strength. I have always said you get 10 or 12 year gaps then you do well again. It is our time again."
Rogers is no stranger to big crowds at the County Ground, having experienced the buzz of more than 28,000 crowds back in the 1960s, and he is adamant the bigger the support, the greater the chance of success.
He said: "I have played in front of full houses at the County Ground before, gates of more than 28,000, and I can tell you there is no better feeling to see the place full.
"When I played you could almost guarantee that Swindon were going to win at home. One season we had 23 home games, won 20, drawn once and lost twice. That was because the crowd inspired us."
Seeing a line of people waiting for next campaign's season tickets to go on sale seemed a world away from the financial chaos the club were in less than six months ago.
With crippling debts rising and the tax man increasingly losing patience, most fans were just worried they would soon have had no team to support.
Rogers said: "I think we have all been used to such horrible things. Over the past few years things have gone from bad to worse but the new regime have taken over and they are all football people.
"It has been depressing, really horrible. My family come to every home game and reading everything in the paper and hearing from people who know things it has been shocking what has happened to the club over the last 10 years.
"Everyone thought the club was going to go, there was a very good chance of that. For it to change completely in six months is wonderful."

Spot on Don. I recall seeing you and Ernie Hunt the CG was buzzing, lets hope the good times return.
PS after real winning La Liga my local Spanish Bar showed us beating the Arsenal in 69(you got a nickname noq the Hare) they were all impressed, they even got the STFC Banner in the bar
How I wish I was there to enjoy the coming season[bold]bold[/bold]

Yes the Don it is amazing, I was convinced we were finished and sometimes have to remind myself of that when we don't play well or MnM has make decisions that i`ve not been able to fathom out. Although i`m unsure whether we will get to 6000ST i really hope we do, and by the way would like to agree with others regarding a chart to show how thats going.(port vale had one when i visited there site a while ago)

I reckon we will get 6.000 tickets sold. I will be buying my first one. I didn't go too every home game last season simply because i didn't want to all the time. But i went too enough games last season to make me buying a season ticket worth it this time around. I will be putting by 20 pound a week and get one just before the deadline i expect.

WTF - I am pleased to see such optimism on here, the season ticket offer has worked for AF and has taken the focus away from a poor manager and players going who were good enough for this league whilst the manager states openly that we are going to have to deal in the free transfer and bargain bucket for players.
That doesn't inspire me to buy a season ticket, regardless of the price....
Although to be honest I probably will, why ? because the sham of a season is over and AF deserves our support for next year, but if MM keep making eccentric decisions and unfathomable tactics then I will voice my oppinion very loudly !!!
Anyone know where the pre season tour will be this year !!!

Just to put the £229 price into perspective, Airdrie uniteds season tickets next season are £225. And thats for Scottish 2nd division football!

It's obvious what perspective Will has put our ticket prices in to anyone who has seen Scottish 2nd. Div. football - unbeatable value !! You guys living in Wiltshire should think yourselves lucky that you can take advantage of it. For me, living in Cornwall, it's another story !!

The Don is a legend.Get another like him you would not need a price cut the would be 10,000+ every game.People walked to football in the 60s not sure where all the cars would go with gates like we got then.

AF is a proven businessman and he isn't going to be advertising, if it's the case, that we have funds available-only to find transfer fees and wage demands get inflated. I'm pretty sure if a quality player we're interested in becomes available at a sensible price we'll be in their trying.

I think there maybe one or two surprises as far as new players go. unfortunately the club are still restricted because they can't get rid of every player they'd like to. but they have definately been looking at some decent 'under contract' players and have put at least one bid in already.

STFGROMAIN.Af is trying hard to stimulate the buzz and I think a few more good ideas/pleasant surprises are likely to be in the STFC pipeline. Let`s all be optimistic for the time being at least. If after 10 games the Town is doing badly I`ll be raising hell with you. Until then : - COME ON YOU REDS !

Only missed 2 games, including all cup games, in the last 2 seasons, so I turned up at 10.00am Monday to get a season ticket. I had been a bit of a numpty and not read the small print and didn't realise it was for renewals only until next Monday. Would have been nice if they could have still processed my application as I have sat in the same seat in the Arkells stand for the past 4 seasons, so they have my name and record on the system. Oh well even if they don't get to 6,000 tickets, it is still going to be £70 cheaper than last season, so I will be back next Monday at 08.00am. Roll on August.

I think there maybe one or two surprises as far as new players go. unfortunately the club are still restricted because they can't get rid of every player they'd like to. but they have definately been looking at some decent 'under contract' players and have put at least one bid in already.[/quote] How do you know that !!!

ah - that would be telling! however the Glasgow connection is concerning a Celtic player who's appeared in the first team. we also put a 'cheeky' bid in for a bournemouth striker (no names!).

I think we should get someone on loan someone like fraizer campbell who is at hull the only prob is that he wont want to come down to league 1, also the key next season is to keep brez he will be our main man next season! the players i would keep for next season in the team would be:
Brezovan
Vincent
J.Smith
Ifil
Comminges (but hes prob gonna go to cardiff)
Aljofree
Peacock
Easton
McNammee
Cox
So i believe we need to look for a new right midfield and a new striker any thoughts???

Swap Alijofree for Kanuka, and you've got to count Timlin in and Blair for supersub.
