FROM THE DUGOUT: Malpas on the final-day win

"CREDIT to the players - I gave them a target to try and get four wins from the last four games, and we got three wins and a draw which is respectable.

It was a typical end of season game, there didn't seem to be much urgency from either team.

We gave away a soft goal and then got back in the game and went on to win it.

The last four or five weeks the boys have done very well and are looking forward to their break now.

We went through a spell of creating many chances and scoring none, but I think we've evened out a bit now.

I don't think we're creating as many chances but we're scoring far more, and that's pleasing.

I think sometimes the players go brain-dead when it comes to set pieces.

That's two very soft goals we've lost in the last two games and they seem to get free headers.

That's disappointing and is something we've got to work at because we must rectify it.

As an old defender that's the thing you try and stop. You don't want to lose soft goals or ones from set pieces.

If someone hits one from 30 yards you put your hand up and say great goal', but we're going through a spell where we're giving away soft goals and it gives us mountains to climb.

I hate to pick out young kids as man of the match because everyone says it's a soft spot, but I thought Sean (Morrison) was our man of the match.

He won most of the balls in the air and his use of the ball was decent. He tired near the end, but we'll accept that.

There were three other kids on the bench and Ben Joyce got another tickle at it, so it's promising that we've got young talent here."

I can't disagree with Mo's assessment of Morrison. That was the first time I'd seen the lad play and he did not look at all out of place. He was my man of the match now and looks a fantastic prospect. He played more like a seasoned pro than a 17 year old kid!

I hope the new board won't feel the urgency to sell our promising youngsters and instead will choose to invest time in developing them as guys like Morrison should be the future of the club.

Let's hope the lads have a good pre-season, get down to some solid work, get fit and hit next season running.

We've certainly finished the season with confidence - hopefully MM has found his feet and prove us doubters wrong next season, I feel the team is settling down, get the Migeul saga over and done with and look forward.

Brings back memories of 62/63 Don Rogers/Ernie Hunt.
As last comment said lets hope we can keep hold of them and not become another Crewe.
Still AF knows the score we may need to sell, lets hope not.

Regarding player of the Year well done.
Wish him well in his future(shame he did not stay) however he did us proud good luck to him.
As for MM well done for the run in, its just maybe we as fans were not totally fair with him.
So all looks good for next season, we finished ok in our first season back in Div 1 all and all better than we expected if we are all honest

Sean had a super game on Saturday. However, there must of been a scout or two having a wee gander at the weekend. Can't help that even though the retention of these youngsters is preferred, the prospect of a profit for the club and the potential lure to the bigtime for the laddie may be too much to resist. Would it be fair to him to hold him back? I can see another Ben Tozer departure in the offing by the middle of next season.
