SWINDON TOWN: Close to perfection for Di Canio

Town boss Paolo Di Canio last night Town boss Paolo Di Canio last night

PAOLO Di Canio branded his team’s display in their 3-0 defeat of Crawley last night as “close to perfection”.

The Swindon boss watched on as goals from Matt Ritchie, Tommy Miller and Raffa De Vita ensured Town claimed their first victory of the League One campaign in emphatic style at the County Ground .

And he heaped praise on his players for the way they took the game to their guests and completely outplayed them over 90 minutes.

“The way we won, as a team performance, is fantastic. This game should finish seven or eight-nil,” he said.

“There was perhaps one mistake in 93 or 94 minutes. I don’t think this happens even in a Premiership club or team.

“My team today was close to perfection. I don’t want to exaggerate but we worked so hard on the details, in focusing attention every single moment during the tactical session during the week, that I expected this kind of performance.

“I have players with quality, with knowledge, so for me it is nearly normal for me to see my team play like this.

“We have to realise that they were absolutely fantastic.”

After the goalless draw with Hartlepool on Saturday, Di Canio was disappointed with the levels of commitment and desire shown by members of his squad in the north east.

However, he was delighted that normal service was resumed last night as the Town players gave their all and got maximum reward.

That shift in attitude, in Di Canio’s eyes at least, played a major role in the result. “It was a different focus, a different attitude since the beginning because at the end of the day it is obvious that I always want more – but even there it is obvious the game (at Hartlepool) should finish 4-0 or 4-1,” he said.

“Even there, on our not very good day and our opponents’ very good day, it should finish 3-1 or 4-1 but it didn’t happen because of the first hour when we didn’t perform.

“We learned the lessons and today we came back as we are.

“We dominated the game, we destroyed the opponents and this is the way to keep going.”

Have to say town were great last night in particular mceveley looks outstanding and looks even better than last season and the closing down by all the players made life very difficult for the creepies, the fitness levels was there for all to see. Williams and Collins look a real handful and both were unlucky not too score. Not one player had a bad game it was very difficult to pick a man of the match but i would of gave it to one of the front men as their closing down and their runs were a real pleasure to see long may it continue.

A complete performance. We looked at 99% for a good 90% of that game. Crisp passing, quick closing and some of the passing in tight spaces was continental. I didn't think Williams and Collins would work together but you could almost see their defenders melt under the constant pressure, I'm sure I saw one of them crying. Miller had a good game and I have to say we look a much more comfortable side with flint at the back. Brilliant brilliant performance.

A very comprehensive display last night. We out thought and out fought them in every departmemt. They were lucky to get nil!
Town are looking very sharp, fit mentally as well as physically. Ferry must have put two yards on his pace from last season and gave the defence a mare. It was Ritchie who got MOTM but you could have given it to any one of them to be honest.
The only 'moan' about last night was that bloody drum! Fair play to Crawley fans for getting behind their team second half, they didn't stop. But that drum had my ears ringing - and I sit diagonally opposed to the away pen. Ban them!

Excellent display by the lads last night. Difficult to highlight a performance although I though Jay (a stone lighter, methiks) showed he is a class act and Ferry was simply everywhere. Can't make Saturday but if we perform like this again, I cannot see anyone touching us in this league.

For me Ferry Ritchie or Flint could have been the man of the match, but the whole team played well, Rafa had one of the best games I have seen him have in a town shirt, they all looked crisp sharp and very very fit. Our new strikers movement was fantastic, Williams for me is a great signing as is Miller, who reminds me a bit of Dougie, if we play like that more often than not we will be up there at the end of the season.

Great game last night and 3 - 0 flattered the visitors , it should have been 6- 0.
I thought that Williams was outstanding and Collins wasn't far behind him.
It seems that Ritchie reads this forum as he was determined to prove that he could play without Cadds. Ritchie's first half show was excellent and his goal brought back memories of Dave Hockaday scoring an identical goal at the same end against Peter Shilton in the cup a few years back.
PDC wasn't happy that Fodders almost got caught out in a similar fashion in the second half. Another clean sheet though to keep the record going. What is it now , one league goal conceded at home since February ? I'm sure that someone will correct me.
Ferry was on good form and had a very energetic game and his vision was excellent.

I couldn't fault any player really , the whole team played well and it looked as if the showed the right reaction to PFC's criticism on Saturdays show.
Last night the tactic sometimes was to play it long out of defence and this isn't a bad idea when it appears we could be under pressure. I guess this is why Flint was included in favour of Troy and I did say this would happen in certain games, expect the same again on Saturday.
No prolific striker but who needs one ? we can score from anywhere, we are Spain in disguise.
Well done Town on a great performance , more of the same on Saturday please.

I do not understand the fixation for Flint! For my money, Archibald-Henville (hereinafter Archie) is a much more complete footballer and does not give away possession every time he releases the ball. Sure, Flint looks - and is good - in the air but most teams are not going to lump the ball up in the air most of the time. Cannot be there Saturday (am singing with the choir on the pitch at the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final) but will be interested to see who is picked to play against the Dons, Flint or Archie.

On another note (no pun intended) that infernal drum left my head ringing. I doubt the club will want to do much but the FA should ban them, together with all other musical instruments. Just a thought - how does a thing the size of a drum get through the turnstile??

Yet another note, Devera and De Vita continue to impress by their ability to step up in class under the excellent tutelage of PDC.

Finally, the missing piece of the jigsaw - are we or are we not going to be allowed to ake on John Bostock? I keep hoping that PDC's hints about new players included this man who would bring a different dimension to football in this division.

Good Luck for Saturday - although luck should have nothing to do with it!!

Mick, certainly depends on which Town team turns up . Last nights team will p1zz all over anyone, with a slightly reduced performance we will edge a win but with last Saturdays team I think we'd only draw.
Our defending is awesome , we defend from the front which is quite unique to great teams such as Swindon and Man U. :-)
If you want a prediction I'll go with your 2-0 but don't be surprised if the margin is greater .

Baritone, thanks for that , what I meant was the last league goal conceded was February. Wouldn't that be great though if we could keep it at that until Oct.

Agree with your thoughts on the game Loyal, we should have had at least 4 goals, from where I sit it was hard to see how Flint could have been off side for the one that was disallowed.

Everyone played well, Ritchie was untouchable first half and deserved MoM although I thought Ferry was inspirational over 90 minutes.

What did you think of Keith Strouds performance, a few dodgy decisions from him as usual and the bald lino definitely needs to go to specsavers, but have to say when the yellow was given to Flint it could have easily been a red for kicking Alexander although the scum bag deserved it and should have got a yellow as well.

Barring injury, can't see him making any changes for Saturday, but one never know with Paolo. Looking forward to the game against the franchise, still cringe when I think the last time they came to visit and won 0-1.

Ciren,

According to the stats they had more possession than us. Most of it was in their half of the field however and did not hurt us. Reminded me a bit of the Morecambe game last season when they had 60% possession, again mainly along their back line, and they too left with a 3-0 defeat.

I was pleasantly surprised at the way Crawley played last night having witnessed their awful tactics under the fatgit last season.

Couldn't agree more about Troy and to think the strength in depth we have is amazing, with Roberts out and Caddis not playing. If he goes we'll sign someone else and very relaxed about it.

Den, as I recommended yesterday take the 10-1 being offered by Coral yesterday. Glad I got 14-1 pre season as well. Every time I've seen us I become more convinced about us.

Next bet, not with the same confidence about us winning the league but take 20-1 on Andy Williams to be top goalscorer. His price may well go higher if he doesn't score against Dons but 20s is a good price for a man who'll lead the line in the Championship winning side. Each way obviously!

Just so happy to have a season ticket and to able to watch us progress. Extraordinary times.

Found this interesting on the BBC site:
--
Sheffield United boss Danny Wilson admitted financial reasons were behind the absence of Nick Montgomery and Richard Cresswell for Tuesday's draw with Coventry.
The Blades drew 1-1 at the Ricoh Arena but the experienced duo were not even included on the bench.
"They were both fit, they were left out for financial reasons," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"They're top lads but it's a decision that's had to be made."
He added: "We've not had any interest in them at the moment but obviously the window is open until the end of the month.
"The position the club is in isn't easy and we've had to make the decision to nurture the young players."
The Blades narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship last campaign, losing to Huddersfield in the League One play-off final.
Following the defeat chairman Kevin McCabe revealed the club would have to cut their budget for this season.
--
Things are obviously tougher than I thought they were...could have a huge impact on their promotion push.

I guess this is why Flint was included in favour of Troy and I did say this would happen in certain games, expect the same again on Saturday. No prolific striker but who needs one ? we can score from anywhere, we are Spain in disguise. Well done Town on a great performance , more of the same on Saturday please. Finally , Please Mr Di Canio can we have our Caddis back please, pretty please !!!!
Looking forward to the game against the franchise, still cringe when I think the last time they came to visit and won 0-1. with a goal from another ex-town player, Sean O,,,,,,, can't remember how to spell his name.
OTR , from my vantage point I don't think it was Flint offside but another Town player just in front of him.
As for him kicking Alexander I thought he was totally stupid and he did it 2 / 3 times and as you suggest it should have been red. However the Crawley player should have got a yellow too.
I don't think there will be any changes for Saturday either , but I will add that this is just my opinion because there are one or two on here that are too quick to jump on any posts and posters with abuse that they don't agree with . Pr1cks in my opinion ! Not directed at you OTR .

Interesting point about the Franchaise is that they've had a player sent off in all three of their games so far.
Be interesting to know if they have a 1 or 3 game ban. Will they have 1,2 or 3 first teamers out come Saturday ?

A memorable performance at the County Ground last night, only blemished by the continual pointless drumming from the morons from Crawley.
I would appeal to Jeremy Wray to forbid drums at the County Ground, because it completely ruins the Football Atmosphere.
Even more importantly has Jeremy and his fellow Directors considered the noise nuisance experienced by the row of terraced houses just behind the Stratton Bank.
It is very surprising that these unfortunate residents have not jointly complained already about this completely unneccesary and unreasonable drumming throughout the entire match.
I am told that Southampton have banned drums from their Stadium some years ago, and we should do the same.
Come on Directors - Listen to your fans and have some consideration for our nearby residents.

.
Couldn't see him being just dropped following 2 clean sheets

As for above comments on Devera - smakcs of a case of PdC is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't!

Surely he was praising Joe purely as he put in a steller performance

It was probably aimed more at him than anyone else - to give him a boost going into MK and beyond

I thought I might tell you a interesting but fuming story, I have Cerebral Palsy and a wheelchair user I've been a Swindon Supporter for 30 odd years now. 2 years ago I moved to Nottingham with my partner, We travel to the County Ground once a month to see them play but we mostly watch Swindon away. I've circled 12 away games this season that hopefully we can see. When we we're drawn at Stoke next Tuesday we thought great another local game for us it's only 45 miles from Nottingham. To cut a along story short, Stoke have send Swindon 4 yes just 4 Disabled tickets. For a Premier League Club this is disgraceful don't you think? My partner phoned Stoke and they blamed Swindon Saying Swindon don't take many Wheelchair users away (which is a joke) sometimes Swindon take a minibus of wheelchair users away, but to be honest they weren't interested one bit. At the end of the day if I was able-bodied I could just buy a ticket and go. Also in the football ground guide Stoke say they have 21 Spaces for Away fans

They hardly had the ball. I did think they knocked it around well at points, but there's no way they can claim to have played well last night. We were just far better
Can't see anything wrong with Barker's statement. He's not saying they were as good as us. He's just saying they played some good football but were not good enough to get a result out of it. That seems fair enough to me. Defeat doesn't necessarily mean you've played poor football. I thought both sides played some good stuff, but we deserved the win because we were fitter, stronger and more clinical than them. Or, to use your phrase, we were far better. I don't see Barker disagreeing.

Interesting and doesn't look at all good for Caddis. Skipping training sessions?? Doh!

Three crucial relationships at the club -
1) Jay Wray and Paolo.
2) The players and Paolo
3) The fans and Paolo

All three relationships look rock solid judging from this incident and last night's performance. Happy days. I'm sure we can get another half decent right back if necessary although Joe Devera has now staked a strong claim.

I wonder what Caddis is worth? He did sign a contract extension so is on the books til June 2014 I believe. £500kish?

I may have this wrong, but was not RDV Paolo's original choice as Captain and then it got changed to PC as the players choice as there was a potential rift in the early days over this and PC won the players vote.

Now also consider that by Wrays own admission this has gone too far and of course its easier to change one player than it is the manager, he doesn't say that is right or wrong but he is backing the manager because its the easier route, not necessarily the right route. I hope the situation is redeemable.

Didn't see the Cibbochi move happening!
.
Yes initially but as time went on and getting named last night suggested he was staying
.
Seems rash to get shot of Kennedy now - unless of course like the Smiths and Connell PdC just didn't think he was good enough to challenge at the top of L1
.
We have cover for now as Thompson can play there should anything happen to Jay
.
Has Ryan Dickson gone anywhere yet? We have been linked with him since last year and is a quality LB with experience at this level
.
As for Caddis if it is true he has missed training then there is no way back and NO ONE can say he is the victim anymore! That is totally unacceptable and is totally unprofessional and backs up everything PdC said (please note the if true part)
.
As for fee depends on how desperate we are to get shot. Would have thought £1m but that could be taken advantage of due to the situation

Spot on!

I came away thinking it was a very good performance. We defended from the front, the strikers running tirelessly throughout and for me, Collins edges out benno for the next game. Midfield and defence were solid.

The overall work rate and commitment was right up there, Crawley struggled to live with us.

Wrays comments last night on radio were pounced upon by the slavering, salive filled gullets of sticky fingered press reporters eager to fill their blood hungry intestines with oxygen rich supposition and watch as someones life is torn apart by eager and anticipatory, reckless w*nk. The world awaits the latest move by some poor soul with child who has only finished the most successful year in the clubs decade. Stilloyal wrote: Great game last night and 3 - 0 flattered the visitors , it should have been 6- 0. Finally , Please Mr Di Canio can we have our Caddis back please, pretty please !!!!
Looking forward to the game against the franchise, still cringe when I think the last time they came to visit and won 0-1. with a goal from another ex-town player, Sean O,,,,,,, can't remember how to spell his name.
Sean O'Halloran mate, is he still there ?
Thanks for the response Loyal and reminding me of his name, I believe the franchise let SO go in the summer, don;t know where he is now, but have always thought him to be disloyal to us after we gave him his chance when he arrived from everton.
Wasn;t he nicknamed "The Chief"? or something .
Wayne Allinson was the chief....only one chief.
Yea southside I know Alison was the chief but so was O'Halloran , he got the name when he played for the Toffee's.

Think Liam has left the udders and is now playing in div 2,. I think he was keen to make a permenant move to Swindon, but Paolo sent him home after concerns with his training. Shame really as I agree with you he showed potential,

I thought Mr Wray's comment 'family comes first' might go down well with Paul Caddis!
