Paolo's gesture of goodwill

PAOLO SAYS RELAX: Town boss Di Canio PAOLO SAYS RELAX: Town boss Di Canio

PAOLO Di Canio has explained his gestures to the crowd during Tuesday night’s 3-0 victory over Brighton, insisting they were not intended to be “nasty”.

Di Canio was captured by the Sky Sports cameras making hand signals and speaking to the audience at the County Ground following each of his team’s three goals in the Capital One Cup first-round win against the Seagulls.

He did not identify who exactly he was targeting, but the Swindon boss stressed that he was simply suggesting that he and his players are well on top of their game despite the recent removal of Paul Caddis as captain.

He said: “It is my body language. Sometimes people think ‘he’s got his opinion, it’s obvious Paolo Di Canio did very well but he’s still young as a manager - this is true’.

“Because they care about me, they are worried.

“I care about the people that are a part of the club. If they go a little bit worried I want to let them understand ‘follow me’ because they’re going to have success.

“My decisions sometimes are unusual - in every club, not just Premiership.

“Me and the players that fully commit go on the field, that was my message. Follow me and them, the players that go on the field and on the bench because they are the players that, in my opinion, can guarantee to us the victory. Not immediate victory but in the long run.

“It wasn’t against someone, it was my way to express to everybody ‘follow us’.

“It wasn’t nasty. It was just saying ‘calm, relax and then we’re okay.”

Di Canio once again asked Town’s fans to judge both himself and his team by their results, not by stories that occasionally emerge away from the field of play.

“I know the people here think Swindon is the best team in the world and if Barcelona come in here we have to press them in their box, regain the ball and win 4-0 because are capable to do this,” he said.

As a manager I have to think differently and work in a different way and first half I heard someone.

“Sometimes they speak too much, let the people speak and follow us because we have the real temperature of the situation - the real facts are in front of us.

“People can judge and have their opinion, it’s a democratic nation. They can say ‘why this and why that’ without even one per cent of the story.

“Follow us and we have more chance to have success, with discipline, desire, commitment, sticking together and gelling together.”

Meanwhile, the Italian is hopeful of recruiting another new player within the next week. There will not be any further additions to the Town squad ahead of the trip to Hartlepool tomorrow, but Di Canio is eager to reinforce his squad in the very near future.

“We are in a good position,” he said. “Tomorrow we’re travelling but we’re okay. We are in a good position and we are very close to someone that maybe can join us in the next few days.”

I don't blame Paolo if he was giving some back. I used to sit in the Arkles years ago with my Dad when he was getting on in years and couldn't stand on the Shrivy any more. I swear some of the 'fans' only used to go for a moan.

I sat in the north stand for the first time since I was a kid at the end of last season and was amazed by the level of ignorance and negativity from large swathes. Serious neanderthals....good idea switching the dugouts to Shrivy. Either that or check north standers for webbed feet on the way in and make them sit at the back with their shotguns. Paolo, ignorance is bliss.

Not sure if Cadds will be in the squad this weekend. He was on the radio saying that he was embarrassed and upset by being told in front of the whole team that the captaincy was being taken away from him.
He also said he was upset at suggestions from the manager and fans that he was not professional.
His comments are sure to upset our impetuous manager which is a shame.
I said earlier that both parties should sit down quietly together and discuss this challenge properly, I wish and hope that this will happen.
Cadds also said that he will continue to train hard as he has always been doing. He hopes he can get back into the team but doubts that he will ever be captain again with the present manager.
He also says that his team mates were very supportive.
Cadds you are very important to Swindon Town and I for one back you, keep working hard mate and get back in the team, we want and need you . You were very influential last season and a great captain.
Good luck.

I wouldn't swap PDC for Sir Alex, but he doesn't always get things right. If he stripped Caddis in front of the team thats humiliating for Caddis, who has been in my eyes one of the best players and leaders we have seen at this club for a long while. He was certainly my player of the season last year. I hope he and Paolo can sit down and just sort it all out.

As for people criticising Paolo on Tuesday I have to say I heard nothing at all.
I believe his gesticulating was aimed at someone in the corporate seating.

As for Southsiders comments all I can say is what a dick you are. There are people all around the ground that have the odd moan and whinge. In fact there were people on this forum last year whingeing about people in the D. R stand continually whingeing, wasn't you was it South ?

Agree with you, Still Loyal, Cadds is too important to leave out. It seems that sometimes Paolo shoots first then thinks. With Cadds it was sad; with the moaner(s) behind the dug-out it was funny.

I wasn't far behind but didn't hear any moaning. He was angry after the first two goals, but after the third he was hamming it up like Jose, pretending another goal's no big deal, we can score when we want!

I sit in the Don Rogers and I only heard a decent amount of support from all round the ground especially the good old town end as usuall!! Come on all town fans lets stick together!!! Thanks for this update loyal, don't think caddis needs to feel embarrassed at all, as you have reported he said all of the players are supportive of him.

If anyone should be embarrassed it's Paolo for the way he has handled this. I don't see this being resolved with a kiss and a cuddle any time soon. feel sorry for the lad and hope it does all work out for him.

These comments about whinging and moaning make me laugh. In my years I see thats it's engrained in the blood of many supporters who have endured many years of terrible football and relegation. But you know what? For all the moaning that comes along, they love the club and its kind of like a moaning old grandmother - you just have to put up with it. As long as the positivity outweighs the negative then we're fine!

People on here would be lying if they make out that they've never had a good whinge. But yes, it would appear we've had it great for the first time in a few years (though it seems easy to forget how good we were in the playoff season with Austin, Paynter and co keeping us entertained).

In essence, its all a part of football.

He will never be a successful manager at a top club unless he learns man management.

If Paolo did strip him in front of the players that's not the best but I'm afraid Paul is going to have to not be so sensitive.

Paolo clearly doesn't feel he has trained hard enough, whatever Paul says. I'm 100% behind the manager. It's his way or no way and that's the what he's paid to do. As for Paul saying he'll never be captain under this manager. Frankly who the hell does he think he is? It's not about you its about the team and the team pulling in the right direction. Question the manager's authority and off you go.

Don't get me wrong I want him in the side but there is and should be only one winner.

I was actually coming on this morning to say I watched and re watched the Brighton game last night. We are going to be right up there again. The back 5 were terrific the other night. Troy Macca and Sir Wes were magnificent and Joe and Jay did a great job to. We will not concede many goals again this year which means we have a hell of a chance.

WIlliams was as good as I thought on the night and I'm really confident we will go up, with or without Paul Caddis.

Your opinion here is fair enough except for you are misinterpreting Cads words he was sawing he thinks PDC has made his decision and he will not reinstate cads as captain not that he would refuse to be captain for this manager, many times in interview he said he respects pdc and that it is always up to him what decision he makes. he is though entitled to disagree with it and be disappointed by it as long as he continued to show respect and train hard

Ok fair enough chaps on the do you think he'll be captain point. I haven't seen it but I'm big enough to accept I'm wrong. Just hacked off as had come on positive and just wished Caddis had kept his council. If course this is a bit unfair on him as Paolo has gone "public".

That said everyone clamours for Paolo to explain his decisions, so difficult. Whatever I'd suggest that despite Paul being hacked off he'd have been better to keep his opinion to himself.

agree your response would have been a better one but Cads response was honest and was delivered respectfully to what he sees as PDC's final decision. He may have been better keeping his council as dreams has said but Paolo has said his part and from cads own words he wanted to set record straight regarding hisfamily and makes it very clear that they are most important thing to him and i respect him for that. I actually still think he has a future at Swindon and hope that i'm right and i hope that if he proves himself again to PDC that when Macca reaches 5 yellows (we all know he will lol!!) that Cads is skipper for those games

Right, just listened to it. Yes family is THE most important thing, but he had to now Paolo expects a level of fitness at the start of pre season, whatever the circumstances.

The manager needs strength, discipline and a leader as his captain. As Paul himself admits he made a mistake.

That's it for for me, end of story. Back on the bus on the bench for tomorrow, back in when Paolo decides he's fit enough. As it is we'll keep a cleansheet Saturday and win the game.

Back to back promotions coming. Watching the birth of a managerial legend.

From BBC Sport when asked about captaincy -

"Under the current manager? I don't know. I think he's made the decision," he admitted.

"The quicker I learn to deal with it the better. I like responsibility but the band has been passed on to Macca and I've got to respect him. I've just got to move on now.

He concluded: "I don't want a public argument, I just wanted to get my point across.

"Me and the gaffer had a disagreement but is not the end of the world. We are grown men and we respect each other.

"Things have been said, actions have been taken and it's time to move on."

He doesn't actually say 'not with the present manager'.

Just listened to the Caddis interview. I thought he gave a very honest and straightforward account of himself. I can understand PDC being brassed off with the fact that Caddis had not maintained a good level of fitness in the summer. However, in true PDC fashion, he has used a sledgehammer to crack a nut. It should never have come to this. There will always be those who refuse to question anything he says or does but I think he needs to add some diplomacy to his considerable range of skills.

I don't really care who the capt' is as long as we play decent football and win more games than we lose. No question that PDC is the best manager we have had since.... Hoddle imo. The side play attractive football and he is able to attract decent players. Caddis needs to get on board or get out. Yes he did a good job last year how much of that was down to PDC's training diet game plans and overall attention detail

Yes, I know. On the general principle, I'm fully behind PDC. But I believe Caddis to be a very professional individual and I think he deserves better than to be hung out to dry in public, with all misconceptions and assumptions that go with that. He made a mistake in not maintaining his fitness, but we are talking about close season, not mid-season. As it happens, I have believed for a long time that McCormack should be captain. I just wish it hadn't come about in this manner.

Yep, don't think many would dispute McCormack will be a good captain, but it would've been nice if it had just been Caddis being relieved of duties to give him a break, rather than the animosity that seems to have gone on. Hope Caddis still has a future here, one of our more dedicated players for sure.

Just listened to the Caddis interview and I must agree with your posts Oi Den. Not heard Cadds speak before and I must say he comes over as a very mature and responsible individual who presented his side very well. I have always rated Cadds as a player and now I rate him even more as a true professional footballer.
Like other posters on here I really do hope this can be sorted out asap. Come on Paolo you have a captain who is like you in many ways so sort it out now before it becomes another unwanted STFC saga.

Changing subject slightly. I have just been checking the odds for the season. I don't usually bet on Town so was interested to see us as joint 2nd favourites at 7/1 with Ladbrokes !!! Is Paolo's plan to lose 4 from 5 to get the punter fans better odds again this season :-)

I also checked out the Top Scorer odds and all our strikers are around 20/1 - 25/1. Choosing which one is tricky so I have looked elsewhere and seen that Coxy is 20/1ish. My bet for the season I reckon.

Just seen Caddis walking through town at the bottom of Bridge Street during my lunch hour, so can only assume he is not on the team bus to Hartlepool.

The thing that is still not clear is the level of falling out between Paolo and Caddis. If it was a mild disagreement then yes it is a sledgehammer to crack a nut. But if its a slanging match in front of people, perhaps on several occasions, then that's a different story. I don't know so difficult to really comment.

All I would say is that any Paolo captain should be leading by example, without question of the managers tactics or requirements. The players I imagine were given details of what to do over holidays in terms of diet, also given weight and fitness targets. If Captain Caddis decided to not toe the line and use his nipper as an excuse I'm not surprised that Paolo had something to say.

If true then sad. I don't doubt you, just saying that those who come on here with malicious comments are usually oufc fans.lets just hope you were mistaken.

Sorry cicloporindorset,

I am new to this but I am a season ticket holder in the Arkells. Sat in TP's having a beer and he walked past in his training kit, no mistake I am afraid.

However, I do not know if the team bus has left yet!

whether he's on the bus will depend on if he is fully fit yet. I think most would agree who saw him against palace he has some work to do to catch up. I put it down to him still carrying an injury, but with what has been reported this week, it could be a fitness issue why he didn't manage to get back in defence quick enough.

Just popped onto the monkey hangers site to see if there is any banter, couldn't see any but I did note they've been given a bye in the 1st round of the paint pot cup, any news as whether we are one of the 16 with a bye.

Think he'll be OK, has just not reached the level of fitness yet required, besides which why make changes when we've kept a clean sheet.

As for Southsiders comments all I can say is what a dick you are. There are people all around the ground that have the odd moan and whinge. In fact there were people on this forum last year whingeing about people in the D. R stand continually whingeing, wasn't you was it South ?
Don't mind the moaning loyalty card, so much as the half digested turnips that cascade from their backward mouths as they scream their lungs out. someone's got to clear that lot up. happy new season to you too.

Just read this thread and can only say three words.

"One Paul Caddis"

Hope Paolo and Cadds make it up. Two of the most influential people at the Club. Paolo made mistakes as a player for sure. Put your arm around the lad. Passion turn to olive branch.

Leon Clarke he is not.

Having now heard both sides of the story all i can say is PDC has got this terribly wrong its one thing to strip Caddis of the captains armband but to do it in front of his team mates is unforgivable.
I know Pdc wants to do it his way but he has to learn quick that not every player are the same some need a good shout at and others just need a quite word, as i said previously Caddis is the constamment professional and does not deserve the way he has been treated. Having said all that Pdc is the manager of my team therefore continues to get my support i just wish sometimes he took a deep breath before he makes some decisions.

I was Reflecting on the footballer vs Olympian debate and decided all Olympians I would be happy to have as sons and daughters, footballers are def dodgy. But, Caddis is one of the good guys and I was proud what he contributed last season, don't quite realise why. And PdC think cloughie. Hard men both but I would be happy to see Caddis become a Swindon legend too.

All I'm going to say is what most on here seemed to have missed in the article above:
.
“Sometimes they speak too much, let the people speak and follow us because we have the real temperature of the situation - the real facts are in front of us. People can judge and have their opinion, it’s a democratic nation. They can say ‘why this and why that’ without even one per cent of the story"
.
The point is NO ONE knows what has happened so CAN'T say who is right or wrong - if anyone actually is!
.
PdC said this decision has taken weeks to decide on and quotes 6 incidents over a month - so hardly a rash decision by him
.
Caddis contridictics himself by saying it has nothing to do with his kid - but then says he slacked off and came back behind due to having a kid - thus PdC comments!
.
However, the way it seemed to happen appears wrong and as Caddis said his professionalism has never been questioned before
.
So both have cases - but as said above without the facts we can not throw allegations against either party!
.
All we can hope for is Caddis is true to his word that he wants to move on will work hard and will rightfully rejoin the starting XI - we have seen before that of players react the right way the door is open or them

London spot on, particularly the bit where Caddis contradicts himself. Paolo shouldn't have binned. Him in front of other players but message is clear.
