Hines and Turner on Town trial
6:00am Thursday 2nd August 2012 in Headlines By Andy Warren
SWINDON manager Paolo Di Canio is running the rule over Zavon Hines and Iain Turner as he bids to add to his squad before the start of the club’s League One campaign, the Advertiser understands.
Both players are free agents after attacking midfielder Hines was released by Burnley and Turner’s contract was not renewed at Lancashire rivals Preston, and the pair were training with the Town
squad yesterday in a bid to earn themselves a contract at the club.
Di Canio revealed after Monday night’s 1-0 victory at Swindon Supermarine that he was confident of bringing in a new face in the coming days, and Hines, who can play as an attacking midfielder or
out wide, could fit the bill as the Italian plots to link the midfield to the strikers.
Wes Foderingham is currently the only senior goalkeeper at the club, with youngster Leigh Bedwell backing him up, and Turner could provide welcome competition for the number one jersey.
Jamaican-born Hines, 23, began his career as a hot prospect with West Ham where he made 31 appearances scoring three goals, and was also loaned out to Coventry where he scored once in seven
substitute appearances.
But despite a decent start to his career Hines eventually left Upton Park to move north to Burnley, but he never made a league start under Eddie Howe and was eventually loaned to Bournemouth before
the Turf Moor club chose to not take up the option to extend his contract.
Turner, 28, has spent the majority of his career as a back-up keeper, and has played less than 100 senior games since starting-out at home-town club Stirling.
From there, the 6ft 3in keeper made a £50,000 move to Premier League side Everton, but only made six appearances for the Goodison Park club in between several spells on loan at clubs including Crystal Palace, Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry.
The Scot’s final temporary spell away from Merseyside was at Preston, and after making his move to Deepdale permanent, he grabbed the headlines as he scored his side’s second goal in their 2-0
victory at home to Notts County with an 80-yard kick which bounced over opposite number Stuart Nelson.
But he fell out of favour after Graham Westley took over as the club’s manager, and was released after spending the second half of the season on loan at Dunfermline.

Having said that if Hines makes PDC grade I think he could be a great signing, and a free as well!

.
To be honest I recall Hines playing for West Ham in the premier league and thinking he looked like a decent young player at that level. His career has not gone well since, but sometimes players need to find the right club to shine. Super Sammy Parkin springs to mind.

If we sign Hines we won't be signing Bostock, which would be very disappointing.

Zavon Hines, might have looked a decent prospect as a younger player, but his recent form has been poor. Why take the risk?

What a mess the Official STFC website is these days.
What previously was a simple and very good format is now a complete headache to view and very time consuming.
Why oh why do people always strive to change things when they work perfectly well in the first place.
I will accept that I am old and grumpy but for heaven's sake STFC leave things alone that work perfectly well.

If your a young player and keep being pushed around then somewhere you are going to find your rightful home so we need to reserve judgement on Hines as you never know with Paolo as a mentor he may well shine.

Doesnt sound too good on the Bostock front then which if we are all thinking is right then thats a real pity as i think he would have been a massive boost to our squad. Dont know much about Hines but as has already been stated he has been pushed around a few clubs as Bostock was and not many clubs rated Bostock until he came to us last season so maybe Hines could be the same.

Think he will fit the bill as back-up for Wes, he's got experience at a higher level and at 28 is the right age should be reliable if and when called upon, having said that we thought the same about another Scottish goalie Frank Haffey, lol.
Taylor is a 5 games a season type of player but had promise Scots U21 / B so looks suited. Hines - I agree that we dont want Hines & Bostock. e need an attacking midfielder who can hit 10 assists and 10 goals a season. If they come free all the better. I had my heart set on Bostock who returned from Portugal yesterday but he will be v expensive so pdc must consider his options right now. imo.
Hines is 4 years older than Bostock, so should have a bit more maturity, having said that I agree with you if we can sign Bostock, great, he showed against Port Vale he was the best player on the park by a country mile, so hope something can be sorted out, maybe we are waiting until he is out of contract and we can speak to him in the new year.
Lets give the lad Zavon a chance and see what he is capable of once he's been put through the paces under Paolo's training methods, he's probably one of those like Murray that needs a comforting arm round his shoulders to get the best out of him, don't want any others with attitude like Leon Clarke orTahoue though. If he is in Paolo's thoughts we might see him against Palace next Wednesday.
Still think we need better cover in defensive midfield though

Should we presume therefore that the trial that Luke McCormick had has come to an end?
Without doubt he was/is a decent keeper, but it's going to be a while before he gets another chance with Town or anyone else in this country for that matter. In summary to your question, I haven't heard or read anything to say he isn't training with us, so would assume he is still contining with his rehab.
