We'll play waiting game in transfer market - Wray

SWINDON Town will wait a further fortnight before playing their next hand in the transfer market, according to interim chairman Jeremy Wray.

The Robins have recruited seven new faces so far this summer, and boss Paolo Di Canio revealed recently that he is interested in bringing in two Championship-standard players who have been offered to Town by their agents over the course of the last 10 days.

However, after sitting down with Di Canio at Swindon’s training base on the banks of Lake Garda, Wray has stressed that he will not be pushing transfers through as a matter of urgency, instead giving his manager time to decide where exactly he requires further reinforcements.

“We’re obviously in pretty good shape with the fact that we’ve got seven in early which was the core of what he wanted to do and I just wanted to know what else was left that he felt he needed,” he said.

“The nice thing was that he’s come back and said ‘I want to wait for a couple of weeks to see where I really do need the last couple of people’, so that’s how we’re going to leave it.

“There’s nothing pressing at the moment, he’s impressed with all the boys here and he’s said he wants to keep a bit of his powder dry as we get closer.

“There are three or four positions where he’s said ‘maybe we need somebody here, maybe we need somebody there’.

“I think he wants to wait a couple of weeks and then decide what he wants to go for. Compared to last year, it’s a fantastic position to be in.”

Wray confirmed that Town have received offers for each of transfer-listed trio Alan Connell, Jonathan Smith and Lee Cox.

And he has now left it up to those players to determine where they end up come the start of the 2012/13 campaign.

“We’ve had offers from clubs, it depends more on whether the player wants to go,” he said.

“That’s their right. They’re having discussions with clubs and deciding where they want to play in the future and that’ll happen over the next week or so when we get back.

“We’ve had offers from clubs for certain players and I’ve gone on the record that the likes of Jonathan Smith, Lee Cox and Alan Connell are welcome to go and talk to these clubs and I believe that’s what they’re doing.

“That’s a process that’s largely in their hands in terms of which clubs they want to go to, but there’s been interest in all those players so that’s good.”

Think it is the right approach as we currently have 2 XI's - so should see how they do
.
We probably are a striker light as Storey is still very young - but Bostock is clearly lined up for that spot
.
I know it is early and pre-season means jack etc - but the likes of Rooney and RDV are getting special praise from Sam over their performances - which can only be a good thing - as it's shows the quality and competition we have
.
If only Bostock came in I would be very happy with the current squad - would still be happy as it is as Ritchie or Rooney could play off Benson or Collins if need be

I'd be concerned if we didn't get a back-up keeper - one injury to Wes and we'd be in trouble at the back.
..
Good move to wait on anyone else though although it seems as though the answer on Bostock will take a week or two hence Paolo is in no rush.

Good game last evening, just a shame that most couldn't get there to watch. Sounds like the boys did well.

Wray is an excellent chairman, up front and in tune with his manager. He is obviously totally committed but also has the good sense to give Paolo a chance to show initiative and leadership. Could you imagine Paolo with some of the egotistical control freaks at some of the Premiership clubs? It would be amusing but hopefully we won't see that for a few years yet.

We definitely need a decent goalie as cover for Wes. I suspect we might have one quietly lined up ........

Suitable goalies are probably available for short term loans from Premiership clubs. I`m confident that Paolo knows all or enough of the angles to give us the excitement of another playoff push . Anyone know how many season tickets have now been sold ?

We have enough strikers - I really don't like this attitude of "Storey is too young". When he came on for 15 mins against Crawley away last year he looked brilliant, and wasn't given a chance after that (which was fair enough as he is still in the youth team). He has banged in loads of goals for the youths - and he already has enough strikers in front of him to make it difficult to break into the 1st team as it is.

I'm very much of the standing "if you are good enough, you're old enough". Rooney played regularly for Everton at 16/17 (extreme example). It makes a mockery of the youth system if they arn't at least given a chance, especially down in the lower leagues

I would expect maybe another player or two in addition to those already mentioned to be transfer listed. I'm just reading between the lines of whats been said here and on the radio.
If we can get some more real quality better than what we currently have then movement out is a real possibility.

On another note it's great news about the impending Town end development. The capacity will be increaded to 4k with a hotel and pitch side boxes.
The council will give the club a 250 year lease.
My only concern is that the car park will disapear. Car parking is a big concern on matchdays and it will be a big, big issue once redevelopement gets underway.

In fact Storey is a Yr 1 pro so even more important he gets game time. At the mo. I reckon this is best from the bench as with the likes of Bedwell and Louis Thompson (not yet a f/t pro). Are 3 strikers enough - well De Vita is a decent striker of course. Thats 4.5. Do we need 5.5? Best wait and see. I still believe if Bostock arrived he is the 0.5 extra needed! But then again - I am of the minimalist persuasion.

Lanky, I think players can be good enough but not ready. I was never sure whether Billy Bodin was not good enough or not ready, and I have the same thoughts about Storey. It looks like PDC believes Bodin is not good enough and Storey is not yet ready for League football, which is a world away from banging goals in for the youths.

We have over the years let some decent young players move on.As for Billy Bodin it's clear he was not part of pdc's plans and i hope he succeeds at Torquay. As for storie another one with pontential and hopefully will produce results.
It as a shame about Connel and Smith yet Pdc know's what he wants. However why Risser was retained is amazing maybe he trains well.
As posts have said we need goal keeper cover and another player only Pdc know's the position.
So hope the Town have a great season

If there were no further additions to the squad before the start of the season, (but I'm sure there will be), barring injuries, 4 of the selected two teams last night will not be in the 18 that will be picked for the opening fixture. If we go with a sub goalie (Bedwell), then I would guess it would be Storey, Chris Smith, Thompson and 1 other to be left out, I would like it to be Risser, because I think he has less to offer than any of the others, but he has a strong bonding with Paolo and as LR has already said many times, he will be on the bench at least, without a doubt. so I would guess it might be Cibbo to give way, but who know's it's a long season so they'll probably all get their chance to show their stuff sooner or later.

To be fair though it is typical Nick Watkins - a lot of words but no real answer...it is his job I know but there are no dates, no costs, no plans, no artwork or designs etc. it is a bit of news to remind everyone he is still at SN1 and not in Italy. :-)

Every time the subject's been raised, there has been a non-commital answer. I really believe a big boost in season ticket sales would result from the announcement of firm plans.

Loyal at £10 a pop they can stick parking anyway! If they had any sense the revamped town end would be on stilits with near enough the same parking as now underneath - simples! - although I'm no architect!

or even stilts! and Den even if they revamped CG like the Millenium - I wouldn't buy a S/T.

Enquired for this year - £340 so = £15 a game say, match day ticket £19 old git rate = 18games x 19 = £342 - I'm likely to miss 5 anyway so don't see much added value in S/T at that price - plus they'll probably do mid-season offers again to encourage BOS!

Hi Den i hope you are well having watched Story quite a bit in the youths i would say he will play more often than some might think he has grown in to a strong young man who has a will to win ,ithink Billy is a good player but needs to get his head right before he will progress i would have liked him to have stayed but i feel the club is moving to fast for him .Its a shame but in Story i feel we have a player who will take his chance when it comes, to stay in the team.

.
Jock, I understand your logic but I think there are probably people who are still undecided about a season ticket. A major positive statement on redevelopment would surely help to sway some of them? I have no doubt that the club is serious about it but we've been given so many different reasons for lack of progress that I think we are due some positive and definite news. First of all we were told that relegation had delayed things, then there was the hint that it couldn't be done without additional external investment, then it had been put on the back burner because Watkins was too busy with other things; now the local elections have apparently slowed things down. Frankly I think there has been a bit of bullsh1tting going on.

I dont believe anyone lies about these things in the current set up at least. Priorities change with finances and matters bigger even than a new ground take precedence. The senior team at stfc will no way make green light type statements until they are confident the light will remain on and with timescales. Personally I dont see how plans can be shared with the fans until they are agreed internally and with the key stakeholders.

Old hat now, so you might not even see this one. You may well be right. I'm not talking about blatant lies; I just meant that the board may well have been putting out a bit of waffle to avoid telling us the real reasons for the delay - probably very good reasons.
