SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio is keeping calm

A SENSE of calm in the Swindon Town camp has helped manager Paolo Di Canio enjoy the first two days of training in northern Italy.

By his own admission, last year’s visit to Norcia was somewhat stressful for the Robins boss, who was left with little downtime as double training sessions sandwiched frantic negotiations and attempts to bring in several players from across the globe on trial.

This time around, however, with the majority of his squad already in place for next season, Di Canio has been able to think through his daily plans and not be distracted by potential incomings.

And that, the Italian said, has been a huge weight off his shoulders.

“Last year when we were at Norcia I remember that every day, even between the two sessions, I used to spend time with Phil (Spencer, Di Canio’s agent) and with the club finding out if players could join us, checking the video because I didn’t have enough knowledge and also a lot of English players didn’t want to join us because we were in League Two,” he said. “It was really hard.”

“(On Sunday) I watched the final and relaxed and then we had a meeting for half an hour to prepare the training sessions and I didn’t have any pressure.

“Now I can look to the future with more calmness.”

Di Canio hinted that, despite having already recruited seven new faces over the course of the off-season, his summer shopping spree may not have ended just yet.

“Maybe another one, maybe another two can join us before the season starts but I don’t have pressure.

“The main job is done already,” he said.

“But if we think the job is done because we’ve brought in seven new players, I want to be sure because I know what kind of players they are but you never know.

“Maybe you’re going to discover everything, 100 per cent when you see them in action day after day and they integrate themselves with the rest of the team.”
