Swindon Town's trip to Carlisle gets green light despite international call-ups

TOWN’S League One fixture at Carlisle on Saturday, September 4, will go ahead despite three international call-ups for Danny Wilson’s side.

Striker Thomas Dossevi was yesterday named in the Togo squad for their African Cup of Nations qualifier in Botswana on the same day, while Paul Caddis and Billy Bodin will represent Scotland Under 21 and Wales Under 21 respectively that weekend.

If a club has three or more players unavailable due to international call ups the Football League will allow them to postpone a match, but Swindon have decided against that move.

A club spokesman explained: “After considering our options, we do not want the game to be called off because it would then have to be played on a Tuesday night.

“Travelling that sort of distance for an evening game would not be an ideal situation for the players and the fans.”

Full-back Caddis will be hoping to lead Scotland to UEFA Championship qualification as they play their final two Group 10 games.

The fixtures against Belarus and Austria will take place on Friday, September 3, and Tuesday, September 7, with Scotland just a point off the top of the pile, and Caddis, 22, is expected to be named his country’s captain.

Wales lead the way in Group 3 but face tricky away ties at Hungary and Italy, where teenage forward Bodin could receive more game time on the international stage.

Dossevi has 26 caps to his name for Togo, scoring once in the process, and has been recalled to his national side. The front man was part of the squad which was caught up in a terrorist attack on its team bus during the African Cup of Nations earlier this year.

That actually does make sense especially towards the fans who travel on the day. The team can do stop overs so I would say that's a decent move by the club. This makes me also think that Danny will have one or two new players in by then whether they be loans or permanents. I would certainly have Darby back then need a decent striker and centre back and with a winger too that would be good.

I've aired my views on the decision, so won't go there again, but just one thought:

3 points on a Tuesday night with a full squad, or risk defeat on a Saturday, at a time when we are not playing well, but the fans got to travel on a Saturday rather than a Tuesday!

What would you settle for guys?

avo I'm with you without a doubt. Why not wait till we've got a full squad, its hardly like we are firing on all cylinders yet. But maybe DW has seen something on the training pitch that makes him believe we'll go up there and win?!

would seem like a no brainer to me.

i.e. we don't play the game with a weaker squad when we don't have to.

On the other hand DW will reckon that we have cover for Caddis at RB or RM, and that Pericard will be fired up against his old club

I think it is the right decision. Especially as Bodin is not really a first teamer.
.
As said Kev can play RB and we have Pericard and Ball up top for Dessevi.
.
Also we don't want a potential fixture pile up.

in dw i trust! got this decision bang on imo. im off to the carlisle game and will be gutted if it got rearranged as i wouldnt make the rescheduled match. but sure dw will have added to the squad by that match. we need to wingers and mayb not a cb after sm performance sat. we dont need cover at rb either because we have young thompson so future looks good. you reds!!

best team wins the day (simple)
having said that he dont rate dossevi, bodin will never play in the first team under him,and caddis will be dropped probably by then, plus carlise are flying so we look forward to another defeat.

dont agree with this decision at all as I already posted on another thread. Leeds got all their games postponed last season due to international call ups, and they eventually went up by the narrowest of margins on the final day. thats how important 3 points can be in the final reckoning. Carlisle are flying at the moment with their start, by the time the replay comes around we could have recovered well and they could have fallen away.(thats what I think will happen tbh) The only plus points I can see are, Pericard will more than likely get a chance to play his old club he did so well at, amankwaah will have to perform and by then we most probably will have a couple more players in including an experienced CB, a left sided player and another striker.
So can see why they would want the game to go ahead anyway. Its still early in the season and we need games to improve.

Leeds didn't do too well in one of the games that was postponed last season - it was against us and we gave them a pasting! Having mentioned that, I still feel this is an odd decision. Given the way we are playing at the moment, I would have jumped at the opportunity to put this one off for a while. Ah well, I'm sure a sparkling performance at MK on Saturday will change my mind.

We need games and we need them thick and fast as far as I'm concerned.

The sooner we get into our rhythm the better. Let's get up that league table.

Another positive gem from grg! Fair point re first comments though - best team on the day wins.

For what it is worth, I think Danny got it spot on, as we need game time and we need to get the boys used to playing together as it is almost a new team with new players in defence, midfield and attack.

I agree to a certain extent with the grumblings about not playing with our strongest squad, but Bodin woudln't play anyway, Dossevi would be unlikely to play the whole match and we have big Kev to come in as more than an ample replacement for Caddis.
