FROM THE DUGOUT: Wilson's frustration at Brentford point

DANNY Wilson was left frustrated by his team's performance at both ends of the pitch as Town drew 1-1 at home to Brentford yesterday.

David Prutton's header cancelled out a Charlie MacDonald goal to hand Swindon a share of the spoils, but the boss knew it could - and should - have been all three points.

A Michael Rose mistake gifted the Bees their opener after eight minutes, while the hosts lacked the cutting edge to convert a number of good chances created in the second half.

“The performance at times was very good – I'm not disappointed," said Wilson.

"But it's always at those two ends of the pitch that it is the difference, and unfortunately we haven't kept a clean sheet or converted opportunities which we have created.

“All the goals we have conceded so far have been down to an individual decision, and that's what cost us. At the moment in time it seems like we are getting punished for every mistake.”

Talking about Brentford's goal, he added: “You've got to make sure you keep your back line nice and tight, and there was no danger quite honestly.

“But unfortunately the decision to head the ball back was poor. It was never going to get there and he (Rose) should have just run the ball out or run it back, and that's cost us.

“Thankfully we got back in the game and really on the overall game and the amount of pressure and opportunities we have had, ours were far greater than Brentford. But we couldn't break them down."

Wilson did, however, pay tribute to recalled defender Sean Morrison, who had an outstanding game at the heart of Town's defence.

The teenager impressed all afternoon, and Wilson said: “He was very, very solid.

"The way that Brentford set themselves up and want to play, we knew it was going to be a real battle in the two centre-back positions.

“I thought Sean came to the party really well. He headed virtually every ball that he competed for, looked solid and strong, linked the play well and did everything we asked of him.

“First and foremost he defended and did that very well. We know what type of player he could be, and with a bit of luck he will start getting confidence from the game."

Swindon travel to Milton Keynes Dons next Saturday where they will hope to pick up their first win of the season, at the fifth time of asking.

"If we had got a win from this one (Brentford) then the confidence would have been sky high," said Wilson.

"But we have to wait a little bit longer."

Danny, how do you think we, the supporters/wage payers feel.
Perhaps, just perhaps , if you came up in the DR stand and sat with us and watched not only the team on the pitch but also the game from our perspective you may appreciate our emotions, thoughts, critisisms, frustrations and sometimes disgust at what we have been subjected to of late.
They tell me torture is illegal in this country, so why do you guys do it to us so often ? We feel it too, but please tell us,why, why, why, no Simon Ferry. You wanted him, we bought him, why in heavens sake are you not playing him, and please NO insults about Prutton being better, as that will be met with rafts of laughter, because we know thats not true. You have the people you wanted, so make it work, you cannot blame the players for these abyssmal displays of late, as they are your chosen team.

Was first game of the season for me. Dominating the game and then such a poor judgement and error to gift them a goal. Had we gone in front at that time I believe we could easily have gone on to win 3 zip. As it was you could see the confidence drain away, just so glad we got the one back before half time as feared worse.

Why no Ferry? Why take off Dossevi, looks good. Charlie looking very shap, but for both up front there is no service. Have read several comments about Prutton and Douglas being too similar and see what they mean, JD looks lost half the time, Prutton good in flashes but too often no real mid field support. Not sure its going to work with both in the side to be honest. Would like to see Ferry playing off Douglas again like last season.

When we were really performing last season it was because we kept the ball down, passed it crisply and gave it to the strikers feet. Currently too much 'hoof' it up the park. Second half was dreadful because against the wind we needed to keep it down.

Agrre good performance by Sean but overall not left feeling confident at the back, Rose had a bad day I guess but always worried every time they attacked, and they were not that good. Definately need a commanding presence back there.

With all the changes I guess Danny is still looking for the right combination. It is frustrating but still early days and lots of promise early on that gives hope. A bit of confidence and we can be up and running.

IMO we over achieved last year and this has created a big expectation causing more frustration than is deserved. Trust in playing football and it will come good.

Some might call me mad (they usually do, to be fair!) but I'm detecting that DW's heart is no longer in Swindon.

I think he probably feels he's taken the club as far as he can, and it may be time for a change at the top soon.

I won't knock DW - he's been a good, solid manager for us and we owe him a lot for the success of last season. However, if his heart is not in the job, we need to find somebody who has the heart and ambition to take us to the next level.

Somebody like 'Mad Dog' Martin Allen would be a good manager, if DW went.

After watching that yesterday it is clear to see something is not quite right somewhere, same as brighton and orient and the last 10 games of last season and of course wembley, for me the formation is not working, prutton and douglas look lost in there positions,no leadership at the back cuthbert looks lost without greer and no good service to the strikers,o brien is in the wrong sport ok he is quick but his crossing and overall play is abysmal, rose made a sunday league error and looks a bit suspect to me,mcgovern is not the same player and charlie needs support up front i agree it may be time to question the management set up and is danny wilson really the right man for the job of getting this club promoted dissapointing start to the season and we really need to get that first win asap

Wilts Leppard,

As posted elsewhere and here also, why did Budgie up sticks so suddenly, especially on a day when a game was being played by his guys. It all seemed a bit too quick. Was there a row with Wilson ?? we will never know. As you have witnessed Wilson is in the habit of subbing off the guys who are doing well. Against Orient we couldn't believe O'Brien was taken off, after which we posed no threat at all. I don't think Fitton will let this ride for too long given all the cash that has been spent this summer and the boo's after the match again yesterday. The discontent is begining to snowball. Before long the gates will be sub 5k with season ticket holders not bothereing. The cracks are there and all too soon, will be all too obvious. The discontent was mentioned on TV, Fitton knows that he needs things to start happening and soon.

Much store was put forward when Prutton arrived, and many were saying a big positive was that he and JD played together at Leeds. However how well did they play together at Leeds and did it work? Did they play together when Leeds were at a bad time with their team in disarray. If somebody can remeber them playing together, one, were they any good, and two, why were they split up ?
The third question is on everybodies lips, why isn't Ferry getting on the pitch, all that effort to buy him and he is bench warming, shear stupidity in the eyes of most.

MARTIN ALLEN ?? I doubt that any league club would give him a job ! I too was surprised when "Budgie" suddenly left but it doesn`t have to relate to crossing swords with Danny. Like so many posters I often dont understand Danny`s subbings ! However I think his system for the striking pair e.g. Austin and Dossevi is to give the weaker on the day a rest from the physical challenges and bring in someone off the bench i.e. Pericard. Dossevi is still learning to cope with the life of a Div.1 striker ! He`ll be OK though ! COME ON YOU REDS !

I think Danny said something to the effect in his interview that the team is a work in progress.

Adjustments have to be made with no Paynter and no Greer. The spine of the team as defined by Cloughie in his autobiography are Goalkeeper, Centre-Half, Central-Midfield and Center-Forward. We no longer have the spine of the team from last season. Cloughie was the first manager to pay for a goalkeeper, in the same manner a manager would pay for a striker. He was ridiculed, but two European Cups later, plus the odd World Cup to go on, the man was a genius.

Greer going will soon be seen as a blessing in disguise, he has great attributes, but lacks pace. Pace is not going to improve at twenty-nine or thirty. If a contract extension had been in the offing, it would have been taken care of in one way or another.

Paynter suddenly became a prolific goalscorer after a reserve game at Reading, when he played along side Charlie Austin. Paynter and Austin clicked, but Austin was the bigger threat, arguably making life easier for Paynter. The midfield with the defence's helpwas working like a well-oiled machine, also. From Easter Monday onwards, the Town were never the same team, as the play-offs approached there was more talk of Paynter going to Leeds, in fact he was asked point blank about it by a younger supporter. Unfortunately for Paynter, he has not played for Leeds due to injury, whereas Greer is on a run of consecutive sending-offs. Just my guess but I don't think Paynter will be at Leeds for more than a season, and I don't think that Greer will be a starter at Brighton for more than a season. Brighton appear to be doing what Leeds were doing when Grayson arrived, be physical and intimidate the other team and the officials (especially the weak ones) - this may work with 40,000 home fans and 5,000 -10,000 away fans, don't think Brighton will pull it off.

Paynter looked disinterested towards the end of the season, while Greer looked tired after unusually for him a full season (he has made less than 200 first team appearances in his entire career - hardly instilling confidence for an extended contract).

The development of a team is fascinating, and a reason for following a lower league team. Pericard, Dossi and Ball are getting there. Soon, Paynter will soon not be missed. Ward, though, is irreplaceable at this level, but not part of the spine.

Back to Greer. It's the link-up play to midfield that is being missed. This results in Prutton not being the attacking midfielder he needs to be. Why prefer Prutton to Ferry? Because Prutton can score a few. Why worry about it anyway with a five player midfield starting away from home?

Why worry at all? Danny and his staff will make the adjustments that are needed. They are clear that a new CB are needed. Are Morrison, Cuthbert or LJF bad players? Of course not. It's a question of blend. An organiser who can feed the ball to midfield in the manner of Greer, is needed in the spine of the team.

But dont gloss over the fact that he also had quite a few poor games as well, including one particular bad game at Wembley.

I'm not going to slag Wilson off to much as he done well last season.

However, His team and tactics are baffling at times, And whenever we go behind in a game we never come back to win.

The last time we were behind in a game that we went onto win was in April 2009, Surely this is a big problem? Is it because Wilson doesn't have a plan B? It is a big problem.

Why does he keep planning Rose when most goals are coming down his side? Surely he needs to be dropped.

Same with Prutton, Him and Douglas cannot seem to play together, Douglas looks a shadow of the player he was last season he plays much better with Ferry, Douglas & Prutton are too similair, It would be ok if Prutton was playing on the right and not in the centre.

Being realistic i don't think we will get into the play-offs this season, Mid table is realistic, Wilson has never got a team promoted from this league and he has had many many attempts.

I don't think Fitton will keep Wilson if we haven't picked up within the next month or so.

We lost 3 pivotal players - so it will take time to adjust.

I don't think we will be pushing for promotion this year anyway, but hopefully we will still be a side to be reckoned with.

Have to disagree with you there Old Stager. Every player has an off day, and Ward was certainly no exception, but he's quick, strong and can excite the crowd with his rampaging raids down the left. We still have some good players but not one who can create that buzz. As for Wembley, I wouldn't single out Ward. He was just one of almost a whole team that didn't show up. Ward or no Ward, the big question is: when are we going to start looking like a team again?

I thought the original post was a wind-up and not meant to be serious, especially mention of Martin Allen.

LJF was injured, not dropped, according to R.S. If he had been dropped from starting, he would have been on the bench. Good to give Kennedy part of a game, though.

Rose started for champions, Norwich last season. He provided the cross for Norwich's goal at the G.G.

We can chop and change Managers, but I bet Hartlepool and Sheffield Wednesday wish they hadn't.

This team is not far away from where it needs to be, or are we worried about Oldham and Carlisle?

I think the same about not pushing for promotion this year but do you think Fitton will accept that? Especially after losing the play-off final and spending a fair amount on new players!

The board will expect play-offs at the minimum, Failure to achieve that will probably result in Wilson being sacked!

It's far too soon to be thinking about changing the manager. He does, however, have a job on his hands to sort out the mess that began in April and just seems to roll on relentlessly. He talks a lot about not "doing things in certain areas", which makes it sound like we just need a little tweak here and there and everything will be fine. I do hope he's right. Even amid yesterday's poor show, there were some encouraging signs. Maybe the corner is about to be turned? The next two games should give us a good idea.

I can't believe some people are warming to the idea of Wilson leaving. He is one of the best and most experienced managers in the division and last season turned Swindon from relegation candidates to promotion contenders and so nearly got Swindon promoted and now some "fans" want him to leave?

Ok, it may not be the start we wanted but it is purely down to a team who have yet to properly gel and some bad
luck along the way.

Swindon have not had a better manager than Wilson in years and I and many more Swindon supporters think that it is ludicrous that people want him to go. I would be fuming if he was sacked even if Swindon came in the bottom half.

Also, I don't know how anyone could prefer having Martin Allen as a manager to Danny Wilson.

We are all asking the same questions here,

Why no Ferry ?

Why Rose as he is not yet inthe groove ?

Why play Prutton when he and JD are confusing things so much ?

Why take Dossevi off and replace him with who ever, as he is one brilliant player?

Why are we always subbing off a better player for a not so good player ?

Where has the tactics and awareness gone ?

Where is the flowing foot to foot game we had last year ?

Why are we sticking to 4-4-2 when it no longer suits our squad ?

Why is Wilson stuck in this confussed mode, while the mood of the players is a shadow of what it was. Heads have been down and dejected for a while now ?

What prompted Budgie to leave so suddenly ?? Very strange. If he was going to go and seek new pastures, the end of last season was the time when clubs were looking around for fresh faces through the summer, not several weeks into the season. Is this dis quiet in the backroom.

People say we should be grateful for what Danny achieved last season, but I don't think we were that great for much of last season, and we achieved nothing apart from an embarassment at Wembley infront of the nation. We have had years of frustration and I'm starting to get fed up with promises that are constantly failing to materialise. To be fair, I think Fitton and Wilson have a lot of faith in each other. Can't see Wilson walking and can't see him being sacked unless we end up fighting relegation. My hunch is that he will sort the mess out, but maybe not enough to result in a promotion push. The board will have been very disappointed at last season's whimper of a finish and will also be pretty miffed if we don't make a serious challenge this term, but I'm sure they will keep Wilson - provided it looks like he's turning things round. Truth is, though, this season was always going to be tough after losing so many of our best players. I couldn't really see the grounds for all the pre-season optimism.

I'd like to see JFL given a game at left back. Prutts dropped for Ferry to see if ferry and JD can kick it off again. Dossevi and Austin to start up front in a 4-4-2. It would give us the similar attributes to what worked for so much of last season. Caddis seems to be a good buy, a shame as Manks and JP were **** hot on the right last year. They had complete understanding if each other. Still I guess it's nice to have your biggest problem being who to chose from a great squad.

As much as I like DW he has NO tactics to change a game. All he does is change the personell but NOT the tactics. We could have gone 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 with 10 to go yesterday but what did he do? Took Doss off and put Ball up front (like for like) then took O'Brien off put ball on the left and Perri up front (like for like). No change in tactics just a change in players... maybe this is why we've never won a game under DW after going behind?...
.
As an aside, I thought Ball was outstanding on the left yesterday.

Good post, 3 Games and they want the managers head totally pathetic.Talk about no patience, its quite obvious that there are issues with new players gelling which did take a while last season with so many loans, but once Danny found the settled side then things got much better. The winning formulae will be found but patience is needed even though I have some worry that we are certainly missing the spine of the side that Danny talked about many times. My feeling is that without Greer and Paynter the spine has been lost and the replacements are not up to it or need more time. Pericard and Cuthbert are not in the same mould so this could take a long time. Add to this the loss of Ward then this side are certainly weaker in my view. Decent replacements on paper but its not happening on the pitch just yet with no cohesion and players not covering each other especially the full backs who are good attacking players but holes are being left. JPM is not covering Caddis very well and Rose for me is not defending well at the moment in most games he has played. We need the spine back in the side which means players like Paynter and Greer. Take the captains role away from Dougie as it affecting his game and then we should be able to get back to where we were almost. In Danny this is the best coaching set up and manager for years and expectations need to be more realistic and give the manager time with many new players in the team. Be patient.

I fail to agree and someone stated that it took Ward a long time to get going at left midfield. I disagree with both statements, it was obvious to me that he was quality from the word go. I don't see that in Rose, Prutton, Ball, Perricard, or O'Brien and to an extent Lucas at present. Far too many weak players in this squad at present. My prediction at present is to finish just outside the play-offs. 10th I reckon. Sorry but this isn't all down to DW either. I know AF has to watch the pennies and hopefully the stadium rebuild will bring the kind of income to make a serious push for championship football. In truth AF should probably keep quiet in public- spouting off about championship in 3 or 5 years etc isn't doing himself or DW any favours. AF & co should stick to what they're good at - getting the club sorted out, sponsorship, stadium and additional revenue streams. At present I think he's put any Swindon manager in a hole with his mouth.

Ok, maybe NOT Martin Allen then (nobody for certain definitely knows what happened at Cheltenham, in particular the incident that is said to have happened in the nightclub), but if Danny has lost the passion, somebody else should take over.

I have met Martin, and I have to say he was perfectly pleasant and friendly. I speak as I find with people, and I do still think he's at least a League 1 manager.

As for the abuse directed at me, mostly from the direction of Tewkesbury, well kids hope you enjoyed your five seconds of fame and how long is it now until school starts again? Or are you waiting for the Village Idiot job to become available?

One thing which I THINK we can all agree on is that we have peaked and are in danger of slipping backwards, if the rot is not stopped?

P.S. Sorry if this was posted twice, the laptop is acting up, a bit like a few people on here.

D.W.'s recent record is gaining promotion with Hartlepool from League II admittedly after a slow start, and leaving the club when in seventh place in League 1. Since then, Hartlepool have had relegation staring them in the face for two consecutive seasons. They may well go down this season, having much the same team as last season. Gates have gone from the 4,000's to the 2,000's.
When D.W. eventually arrived at Swindon, relegation was staring us in the face. D.W. turned a team heading for League II into League I promotion contenders in just a few months. Two weeks into the new season after losing one league game out of three, the manager's future is a subject of discussion. This is ridiculous.

Yes as a paot said, something aint right. When look at te run in games last season and the first few of this I am not sure what's gone off.
AF has funded players, DW as normal has his procedures to get in new faces.AF staed on radio interview if a target becomes available they will try for them.As to DW just maybe he aint as good as we all figured, yet to date he has done ok. We stll need a CB and striker/winger, as to VP still feel he will come good.
On paper DW has recruited semi decent players yet it's not working, as a ps said how long before AF will put up with these sad performances and look elsewhere for a replacement for DW, however lets hope it's not another MM. So DW and PS get moving find winger and CB and get the squad working
Good luck

I was referring to other incidents which happened with M. Allen at the training ground which gave the board course for concern. To be perfectly honest I don't think any club will offer Allen a contract without getting a warning from Cheltenham to leave him well alone. The nightclub incident was a good excuse to get rid of him.

Danny's job here is ongoing and not something that can happen overnight and the full circumstances of his time here should be considered before Idiots start spouting for his head. It takes some reading to actually believe what these fans are writing but I always have a feeling that it could be wind ups from Poxford fans. Anyway Danny came here when we were staring relegation in the face and he did well to keep us up as we looked doomed at one stage. Last season was excellent especially as we had many loan players and eventually Danny got a settled side. The loans returned to their clubs which caused a massive hole in the team. Add to that Paynter and Greer leaving then its no wonder we are building again but this time Danny has tried to get permanent deals which has given us more stability. All that is wrong now is players need time to adjust to the way we play and gel with each other YES GEL WITH EACH OTHER! So I say to fans let Danny and his coaching team(best for many a year) do their jobs and be patient. Yes we all expect better due to last season but when you look at the whole picture we were victims of the loan market and players wanting away. The spine of the side was torn away and we do not have one now that's a fact. All this calling for the managers head is nonsense after just 4 games. Danny has said he regretted Greer leaving and is looking to replace him if possible. Now let him manage and do his job.

All this talk of a disapointing start, and to be fair it is, but perspective please.

If we win our next game, we have 5 points and only 1 defeat in the 1st 4 games, so hardly time to be throwing in the towel on the manager etc is it?

The number of fans calling for the manager's head is very small. Most postings on here simply relect the legitimate concerns of supporters - and they mostly contain constructive ideas. I completely agree that we need to keep a sense of perspective and not get tempted into a knee-jerk response to the problems. But we would have a very strange sense of perspective if this forum did not reflect some disquiet at our very poor start to the season.

Agreed and I have myself voiced little bits of uneasiness at our start, my point was indeed aimed at those who seem to go from one end of the scale to the other, dependent on our results. These people do indeed need some perspective.

I am most certainly not going to join the band of misguided posters who are calling for DW's head BUT it also has to be said that some of the the fanatically pro DW posters also need to stop and consider the facts.
It is not just a poor start to this season with new players, but we need to remember how poor we were as a team for the last dozen or so games last season.
THATS A LOT OF POOR PERFORMANCES!
My point is that the management are not only struggling with the current team, but they also appeared to lose their way with the promotion chasing team at the business end of last season.......the common denominator appears to be motivation and tactics from the management , if not then we surely must believe that we have (and did have) a team of players who have been massively overperforming and have now been found out by opponents.
I appreciate that new players need time to gel, but that is surely what the training ground is for, we cannot just sit back and allow the team an indefinite amount of matches 'to gel' otherwise we are going to be looking at a very disappointing and worrying season.....remember back a while, a lot of people kept saying that we had to give MM time....we did and look how close that came to disaster.
Will AF give DW that much time?.....will we get on his back if he does and fortunes do not change?......it's not a simple, easy question.
Consider DW's management career, it seems to indicate an initial upsurge in the playing fortunes of his teams followed by a huge dip, perhaps that goes to prove that he is unable to change tactics and that all opponents know exactly how his teams will play and also realise that he is incapable or unwilling to change tactics?
The opposite argument to this seems to be that once he has departed the clubs concerned always seem to remember him for all the good work that had been done.
We all have an opinion and mine is that we need to give DW some more time, but also a well placed boot up his bottom NOW, for him to pass on to some of the players NOW, the past is history and what is important is now and the future....we must not let previous good work go to waste just for the sake of sentiment, although we must, most certainly, encourage loyalty.
Hopefully the table will look better after ten or so games and the performance level of the players and management will have improved dramatically and the club will continue to move forwards and we can all enjoy more good times together.

Agree with above, the last thing we need now is to change our management not that AF would even consider that at such a early stage of the season. However Ive read on numerous post `in DANNY WE TRUST` well now is the time to do just that.I appreciate the frustration of being a football fan i am no different to anyone else as i want to see our team do well, but we have the making of a good side and it is up to Danny to do his job and get us playing like last season where we were a very difficult side to beat.

Calling for DW’s head after 3 games is totally insane! There are still 43 games and 129 points up for grabs – by my rough calculations that could give us 131, which should secure at least a PO spot if not automatic promotion!
.
Also, why are we back on the “we can’t sign anyone” nonsense again! Did I simply imagine us capturing 6 new players in the summer in the form of Prutton, Rose, Caddis, Ferry, Dossevi and Ball?
.
As has been said at least 1,000,000 times the reason why DW takes time is down to the fact the players he wants are quality players and are not readily available like utter tripe
.
I don’t care if Poxford signed 10+ players, as we do not want any of them. Also, when you do see a few signings who you think might be good – ala Ruben Ried – you have to look at the circumstances – i.e. he only moved 5 miles down the road which is handy for a loan signing.
.
DW clearly said he knows who he wants but as he has been on the bench for a CCC side he is unavailable at the moment – showing the quality he is looking at if he is in the match day squad
.
He then clearly said if he can’t land his target(s) this week he will look at already identified loan targets – which is good as he wants more perm STFC players – something people were moaning at last season but has been addressed this season.
.
I haven’t actually got to see a game this year due to personal reasons – but my old man is a season ticket holder and been to all the home games and I’ve listened to all the games and read all the reports so have a reasonable idea of what’s going on.
.
My take is most people are over reacting to the results and it is only minor tweaks which are needed. For example Orient didn’t have a kick for 60mins and we should have been 3 or 4 up – but then 2 errors leads to 2 goals.
.
Brentford again didn’t have a kick and we were totally in control when an error leads to a goal.
.
You can’t legislate for these errors and this is what has affected us to date – and as soon as we start reducing these results will follow as we will not be shell shocked or chasing games anymore.
.
The way I would address this is to try and play to our strengths more and alter the shape slightly to give more protection and attacking emphasis at the same time in the form of 442 diamond.
.
This suits us as we have Amankwaah, Caddis, Rose and Kennedy who are all attacking full backs – of which 3 are better going forwards than backwards!
.
Therefore as our CBs are good individually but not experienced to cover the gaps or had a chance to build that partnership to work together effectively then we need protection.
.
This should be Douglas at the foot of the diamond – this is where he can lead as captain by controlling the CBs and midfielders from an ideal view point.
.
Dougie should be told not to leave the centre circle for the entire game – moving to the front if we are attacking, the left if the game is over there, right if its over there and back if we are defending.
.
His sole purpose will be to break up the oppositions attack, remove the threat of any players in the hole of the attacking midfielder in a 451 and also should be the play maker – the CBs should simply be order to attack the ball and once won give it short to Dougie – he should then get his head up and either spread it wide to the full backs or forward into the two Central midfielders.
.
The right sided CM should be JPM as this will allow him to get more involved by having the option to play narrow but also still allow him to link with Caddis or Kev and provide the decent croisses he has been over the last 12 months or so.
.
At the moment I would actually play Timlin as the left sided CM. I know this seems strange but it was him who set up two of the reserves goals with crosses and being left footed would give us balance in there as we would have 2 left footers on that side. I’ll let those who were at the reserve game to comment on his overall play but is sounded good from the reports.
.
I would then have Prutton sitting at the peak and ask him to concentrate on getting forward and as we have seen on sat he can do this and get results.
.
We then have alternative options in all positions:
.
Left back:
Obviously as we saw on Sat Kennedy is back so can provide an option – However, Caddis has played LB for Celtic so if Rose is not performing and Kennedy is not ready due to being out for 18 months – he could go over there. Or JFL as he did for 20 odd games last year is another option.
.
Right back:
This is simply a straight choice between Kev and Caddis – but could have Cuthburt if desperate.
.
Defensive Midfield
Caddis could also go into the defensive position in the diamond – AF hinted this could be a position for him in an interview pre-season. This would then allow Dougie to go into one of the central midfield positions to hopefully be more heavily involved in both attack and defence.
.
Alternatively Prutton has been criticised as being too defensive and similar to Dougie so he could be an alternative too in that position.
.
Right Central Midfield
Caddis again could excel in this position – as one criticism has been his defensive side – albeit against a good player in Weston – so this would relieve him of this side but allow us to benefit from his attacking play.
.
Left Central Midfield
The other alternative here is Ferry obviously, as I said Timlin too start earlier. However, Ferry could play on the right hand side too if needed alongside Timlin as he did in the reserves if required.
.
Prutton too could be an option on either side if required.
.
Attacking Midfield
JPM would be my first choice as alternative as he is very creative and can score goals – this could give him a great opportunity to insert himself in the game.
.
It has always been felt that Ferry should be getting forward more so playing him here would see if he could play that role.
.
Alternatively it could be Ball as he is good at running with the ball and this would restrict him less than being out wide.
.
Up top it is about finding the right partner for Austin be it Dossevi, Pericard or Ball. All have shown glimpses this year and hopefully one will really take that role on – at the moment that is up to Vince as Dossevi learns the English game – as I think a “big man” would be best.
.
I have dropped O’Brien despite his reported improved performances as I feel he is better suited as an impact sub. We should look to terrorise tired defensive with his pace.
.
We could then change to 451/433 to deploy him. This would see a central 3 from JPM, Dougie, Pruttonn, Timlin and Ferry and wide players of O’Brien and probably Ball. This would give us pace and running on both sides which teams will not like facing late on.
.
Then the lone man could be any of the 3 forwards depending on the CBs – as Vince might be needed for brutes like Brighton, or it could be Austin for a more of a poacher or Dossevi for in between.

It was good to see Sean Morrison put in a good display, and let's hope that we turn the corner sooner rather than later.

A loan move for Quinn/Gerrard/Hudson from Cardiff or Cruise from Arsenal could help give more options in central defence.

I would also, personally, go for another goalkeeper and offload Smith.
