Celtic duo could cost up to £600,000

ANDREW Fitton believes Town are set to land two players who “fit in with their plan”, as Celtic duo Paul Caddis and Simon Ferry finalise their moves to the County Ground in a deal which could eventually reach nearly £600,000.

The Swindon Advertiser exclusively revealed earlier this month that manager Danny Wilson was lining up a permanent double swoop for the youngsters, and they look to have finally got their men.

After having an opening offer rejected, the Advertiser understands an initial fee of £350,000 was agreed for the players on Wednesday.

And it is believed that figure could further rise by more than £200,000 depending on appearances and achievements, while sell-on clauses are also included.

Ferry and Caddis, both 22, are expected to agree personal terms and complete their respective medicals in Wiltshire today, and chairman Fitton revealed both could be unveiled on the pitch before Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Nottingham Forest.

“The ink isn’t actually dry yet on the agreements, but we see no reason why there should be problems with the medicals,” he told the Advertiser.

“The players also already know in principle what the personal terms are.

“I would be surprised if they play on Saturday, but they could certainly be paraded on the pitch before the game, and it might even be like the old days where players signed their contracts in the middle of the pitch.”

Ferry is already popular with the County Ground faithful having enjoyed a successful 10-month loan spell at the club last year, in which he formed a formidable central midfield partnership with Jonathan Douglas.

And they attempted to recruit Caddis, who is comfortable at either full-back or in midfield, on loan in January but could not finalise the move before the transfer window shut.

Town’s chiefs have been forced to bide their time in order to land their targets, but Fitton insists that level of patience has been rewarded.

“Even though we’ve been after these players, we haven’t been camped outside Celtic’s door for the last six months,” he explained.

“We have an open agreement with them, they told us they would talk to us after pre-season and that is what happened.

“We try to do deals in a patient and considered way. Danny Wilson and myself would rather wait for the right deal, and it has proved to be worthwhile. We are more patient than a lot of people it seems.

“Both are players who fit in with our plan to recruit players who will kick on and do better. Paul Caddis is a high quality player, and we haven’t seen the best of Simon Ferry yet.”

I would have been happy for the club to have paid £350k for Ferry alone but we get Caddis in the bargain as well, an excellent piaece of business. Caddis could be anything - does anyone know much about him?

Caddis is Scotland U21 Captain so he must be pretty decent, Ive spoken to a few mates who are celtic supporters and they cant believe they let him go! if you look on some of their forums they think hes worth a million plus on his own!? Great business AF + co

Speaking to the Celtic Fans here, a lot of them are more upset about losing Caddis then they are about Ferry. They feel the lad was not given a fair chance and would have done a very good job for them. They also think that we have got them both for an absolute steal !! The jigsaw is coming together, haven't been this excited about a new season since the early nineties - Well done to AF and the board, the town are finally back !!

Even with add-ons etc at 600k what a deal for 2 young players, good investment for club, plus should boost ticket sales.
At least there ours now problem with team of lonees is they can get recalled at anytime.
Again AF has done it, where would we be without him.
Just a point when we all winge on like we all do just think back to the Bad Old Days.
Hope this does boost season ticket sales, get feeling incomings are not over yet

I had the pleasure of meeting one of the members of the board last season just before the fulham game. And he was asking about progress I thought the club had made. So I paid reference to some of the comments on this site and he informed me that he looked at these threads on a regular basis. To getting a measure of where the fans are at ( and also as some of the comments are quite funny). So it comes as no surprise.

600K as a potential rise in the cost in these 3 acquisitions is a brilliant piece of business so well done to all involved.

Now then Mr Fitton Sir, who else is on their way? Will they be in by tomorrow too?

I'm convinced although I have no evidence as to why, that these two are not the final permanent additions to our very good looking squad.

what i find just as exciting as the two signings is that now this deal seems to of been done the board can exert all their time on these extra one or two players we will get in. I was worried this deal might drag on to the detriment of other possible deals. i still reckon we are going to get another big suprise, a prutton callibre player, please please please.
and as for the boys signing their contracts on the pitch, really good idea i reackon.
also one other note, i live near cambridge so alot of people around here support peterborough. they played forest last week (and beat them incidently). they were charging £20 a ticket for the game, the board are charging £10. we really should never take it for granted how good we have it nowadays. dear god as supporters we have paid our dues but a big thanks to the boards for all your efforts. despite all the banter on here, the one thing that binds us together is the club, but not only a club now, a club on the up!

Proud to be a Swindon fan as always and today is no exception. Currently in Queenstown, New Zealand.. It's near enough 4 degrees or something stupidly cold.. This weekend, I am going snowboarding and I won't be wearing a coat.. Just the red Swindon Town shirt.

The team looks fantastic! The core team is already giving me a selection headache, especially in midfield!

* Lucas
Smith

* Morrison
* JFL
* Caddis
* Amankwaah
* Cuthbert
* Rose

* Ferry
* Douglas
* Prutton
Timlin

* McGovern
* O'Brien
* Ball
Bodin

* Pericard
* Austin

* meaning should be first team starting

Midfield is obviously our strongest area. The strongest midfield since I can remember. I believe we need to capitalise on that as this will allow us to control games and dominate. We have 18 players. But when it breaks down like that to where people are expected to play, I think we need another 4 players. I think we need 1 more striker, 1 out-right winger (preferably that can play both sides), another winger/ striker similar to Ball, another body in defence that can fill in at all positions (maybe another for defence.. Darby? I know everyone says that Amankwaah is right back, but he could fill in at centre back too?) and that will equal a squad of 22, (my lucky number!!).

We have a solid starting line-up but we need more depth to cover any problems we may get throughout the season. The 4 players we bring in, I think the striker should be perm and the other 3. I vote Vine, Darby, Ward and the young Chelsea player we have on loan.. We would utterly kill this league!

Long live the reign of Fitton and Wilson - together Swindon Town will get back to where we belong! The glory years are about to return ladies and gents! YOOUUU REEEDDSS!!

Your right. I'm genuinely excited about this season. A lot of people are also forgetting we've signed Rose, one of the best left backs in the league. Imagine, just imagine, if we manage to get Ward back for another season and possibly another centre back. I think we can show Southampton how to win the league properly and with style by building a team that wants to play for the club rather than throwing money at a load of mercenaries to try and buy the league.

It would have been interesting if AF had been asked in the interview whether this higher combined fee (I know, assuming add-ons) means that there will be no more fee signings this season? We received £500,000 for Greer and Henshall, and £350,000 out initially for Ferry and Caddis, but a higher figure taking the add-ons into account. Though I don't assume that these two figures must correspond.

That's four (possibly five) permanent players out and now four in. So I suspect that any other signings will be loan signings, but I hope I'm wrong. Anyway, last season's loan signings were pretty good!

Did anyone notice that Darby came on as a sub for Liverpool last night in the Europa League - It looks like he's in their plans, even if just for the moment although I'm guessing he won't be a target any more after signing Caddis, we don't need four right backs!

SAPFanSTFC, Thatcham says...

From a few of the regular Celtic chat crew:
Hopefully there's a big sell on clause or buy back price. Soon Swindon will have Forrest, Sheridan, rogne, etc at this rate. It's shocking that these young players never get a chance at Celtic and players like Murphy, Mulgrew and Ledley are signed instead. There's no way Ferry would not become at least as good as Brown if he was given a regular game. And Sheridan better than Murphy.

to be honest i would expect 450k for caddis alone, smashing young player.

If im being truly honest i would want a loan deal again, and if we well at all for these prices there has to be a sell on clause.

You already know about Ferry, but Caddis will be a cracking wee player for you.

Well done Swindon. I hope they are a success at your club.

Liverpool rested 10 players who were involved in the World Cup so I wouldn't read too much into it just yet. It's good for Darby to get the experience though.

Agreed we don't need the RB cover as we also have Thompson! I predict only loan signings from now and I'm quietly confident that Ward will come back for part of the season.

I like many on here am very surprised to have got both these players on the cheap it seems and against the wishes of many Celtic fans, especially Caddis who was very highly rated up there. When we talked about the possible chance of signing Simon Ferry towards the end of last season the main questions were, would Celtic let this top prospect leave and how much would it take if they agreed. I thought 5 to 600k at least for just Ferry which would have marvelous if it came off. So like many fans on here I am just gobsmacked to have got not just one but both players for a fantastic price, even with the add ons. Sound investment by AF and our Danny and patience paid off yet again. Hopefully one or two more decent in-comings will make this season full of promise once again and we could go one better than last season. The bar has been well and truly raised with the additions of Rose, Prutton, Caddis and Ferry. Come on YOUUUU REDDDDDSSSSS.

The squad although still a few bodies short (I believe that will be sorted soon) looks immense right now for this league, and it is not a team of mercenaries on huge wages bought at a huge costs.

The starting 11 will be quality and we have so many options where players can move to 1 or 2 other positions on the pitch i.e. Ball Striker/Wing, Lecs CB/LB, Caddis RB/RW etc.

Also I think we are going to have one hell of a bench this season and that could be crucial, last season we struggled if 1 of the starting 11 were injured or suspended.

I am totaly excited now for the start of the season and cant wait to see at least 3 or 4 more quality players still come in.

What is good about the squad is that we have players who can adapt to a number of different formations, and styles.Just need a couple of extra players notably at CB, and Defensive midfielder expect DW will be on the case,probably already has been for weeks.Players need a bit of time to gel, so maybe the first few games will be a bit scratchy, but with the extra quality we have this term compared to last I really fancy us to go up automatically.

the * was meant as such that those players arguably should be on the pitch every week as part of the starting 11. The fact that 15 I have *'ed to me shows excatly how strong we are because I for one would not like Danny Wilson's job choosing the starting 11 every week. This has to be the one of strongest squads we've had in decades and the best thing about it, so many players have age and time on their side to develop and grow with the club as we climb the league table to the top.

Red and Proud as a Robin should be! Anyone dare to start EIEIEIO? :) I'll start saving now for my flight home for that game which will confirm us for promotion or do I dare dream... confirm us as League 1 Champions? YOUUUU REEEEDDDSS!!

As it is likely Ball will play left side of midfield I wouldn't bet to heavily on top scorer!Lovesey Ball is going to be a big hit with the Town faithful. Saw him at Ciren on Tuesday he is quality either as a striker, or left wing.As a striker his movement in getting in to good positions is excellent, but he is just as good out wide with the ball at his feet going forward. I've said before, I'm not too sure about a 4-5-1 formation for us, especially at home. It works best when you have two wingers in the line-up and a strong centre forward who can hold the ball up.

I don't like the idea of Charlie on his own and being doubled marked. We don't have any wingers of note although I expect Ball will be played out of position on the left wing (I can't see Ward coming back - sorry); and neither Ferry or Prutton has a good goalscoring record (yet anyway).

4-4-2 still looks the most likely option for home games, but with quite a few central midfielders, DW's going to have some interesting selection decisions.

And that's before the new loan singings arrive!

Great news as everyone has said, and it will be interesting to see what happens next.
.
The way I see it, five first team/squad players have left (Paynter, Greer, Easton, Marshall, Macklin) and we have signed four replacements (Prutton, Rose, Ferry Caddis).
.
Fringe (young) players have been balanced with Henshall and Hammonds leaving but Bodin and Evans added to the squad.
.
We currently have one on loan, as opposed to five, three of whom were integral to last years' team (Ferry, Ward, Sheehan).
.
So I reckon one more permanent signing, and if it was my choice I would get an experienced centre back. If we could improve on Greer at the heart of defence we would have one hell of a team, but currently I see us vulnerable here.
.
That would leave potentially up to four loanees, I would say definitely one striker and one winger. There's no hurry to add others, we can wait to see what's needed.
.
Oh yes, just for fun, my starting line-up: Lucas, Caddis, Cuthbert, JFL, Rose, JPM, Douglas, Prutton, Ball, Pericard, Austin in a 4-4-2.

Fringe (young) players have been balanced with Henshall and Hammonds leaving but Bodin and Evans added to the squad. . We currently have one on loan, as opposed to five, three of whom were integral to last years' team (Ferry, Ward, Sheehan). .

The 25 man rule is only going to benefit teams like us!
.
OK it doesn't feel like it at present - but as soon as August kicks in and the Premiership sides have to finalise their 25 - they will suddnely have some spare players on their hands.
.
These will then be sold or loaned out - these will either come direct to teams like us, or to NPC sides who then in turn will have spare players and want to sell or loan etc.
.
As DW has said Bolton have acknolwdged our interest but have informed us we will not have an answer until sometime in August when they finalise their squad.
.
I'm sure this is the same at Man City, Liverpool or whoever else we now have contacts with.

London Red - as I understand it, Premier League squad regulations for this season mean that they can have a maximum of 25 players who are over 21 (but as many more players under 21 as they like). These squads must be registered at the end of every transfer window. Eight of these 25 must be 'home grown' i.e. Italian, Brazilian and Portuguese youngsters that Wenger and Fergie snatched from their parents at the age of six and have 'been affiliated to the FA' for three years. Players loaned to Football League clubs cannot be replaced.

Chelsea must be facing a few problems, and last season I think Liverpool had something like 58 professionals on their books?

The Football League at its AGM in June voted for similar squad regulations to apply to all League clubs, but with 10 home grown players instead of eight. However, they omitted to say whether that comes into force this season, or next.

•Simon rose through the Celtic youth ranks and trained regularly with the first-team squad when Gordon Strachan arrived at the club in 2005.
•He was part of the Scotland Under-19 side that reached the final of the 2006 European Championships and then made his first-team debut on a pre-season tour of Poland.
•Injury problems cut Simon's 2006/07 season short and he missed almost the entire 2007/08 campaign.
•After working hard to make a comeback, Simon managed to get himself fully fit towards Christmas 2008 and he was slowly brought back into the first-team plans.
•He made the bench for many of Celtic's games in the 2008/09 run-in and scored the goal that clinched an eighth successive title for the reserves. Simon will be looking to build on that in season 2009/10.

The first three games of Paul’s Celtic career could all be classed as memorable ‘debuts’ of sorts.
• His first appearance was as a sub in a 1-0 away SPL win over Falkirk on January, 27, 2008.
• He followed that up with his first start which was in a 5-1 Scottish Cup victory over hometown team Kilmarnock when he set up the opening goal.
• His Celtic Park debut was of the highest order when he marked Ronaldinho as Barcelona visited in the UEFA Champions League later on that same month.
• A classy full-back, Paul was heavily involved with Celtic at the start of season 2008/09 and then spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Dundee United, where he impressed.

Not sure about Caddis contact with the Hoops, but Simon was out of contract after turn of the year and would have walked for nothing. So once he made his mind up I don't think Celtic had much option other than to strike up a deal with add ons.

Yeh and thanks for funding the top starlets who have wonderful futures in the game just read the Celtic forums as they are gutted at losing these two for so little. To think we got Greer for nothing and sold him for 250k which funded the Celtic players so many thanks money bags Brighton for throwing some cash our way on a half decent player but far from reliable. Great to hear opposing fans make big predictions against the Town, just like Southampton, Leeds and Charlton did last season.

Both nicknamed the Bees. Maybe that's somehow caused the confusion. On a different note, I'm starting to wonder whether we're all getting carried away a bit too early. We haven't kicked a ball in serious competition yet, let alone got any points on the board. I hope all the optimism turns out to be justified. Maybe I would be a little more confident if we had that missing centre back and striker on board! We've made some good signings but the harsh reality is we still need to replace 2 players who were a huge influence last season - or most of it anyway.

I quite agree Mancrobin. As a Brighton fan living in Paris i find this kind of uneducated behaviour old hat. Really shows some of the English underclasses up for what they really are. I imagine most of this lot have been on the Jeremy Kyle show more than once. Good luck next week Swindon. We look a decent outfit. Watch your back(nudge nudge wink wink!).

Baglady....

Don't try coming the high and educated mighty. You make the effort to come onto Swindon's messageboard all the way from Paris, trying to wind people up and annoy them, then when you get a broadside back (and people will always use stereotypes as insults), you try and find some moral high ground.

If you just stayed away you silly little twit then people wouldn't insult you.

I doubt if all men in Brighton are gay, just as I doubt all men in Swindon are heterosexual.
