BREAKING EXCLUSIVE NEWS: Fee agreed for Greer Brighton switch

First published in Headlines This Is Swindon Town FC: Photograph of the Author Exclusive by

TOWN have agreed a fee to sell captain Gordon Greer to League One rivals Brighton, the Swindon Advertiser can exclusively reveal.

A fee of around £250,000 was put in place for the 29-year-old's switch, and the Advertiser understands Greer will travel to Sussex on Monday to have a medical and finalise personal terms.

It will end a summer's chase for the centre-back by Brighton boss Gus Poyet, who has already had a number of verbal and written bids rejected.

But he has finally got his man and Greer, who only arrived on a permanent deal from Doncaster last May, is expected to sign a three-year deal on Monday afternoon.

Very suprised by this! As you say Lovesey he must have wanted to go. I imagine they're offering more than we are paying and its a 3 year deal. Still though, with what we're building here and the players that should be arriving - you'd have thought he would of wanted to been part of it! I hope the figure was more than £250,000 - we turned that down the other week didn't we!? Obviously we dont know the ins and out of this yet - maybe we wanted to sell him, I'm sure we've got our eye on a decent replacement. Hmmm, interesting!

This is a very tight call. We commented on it earlier and at the time I felt it was a risk worth taking, provided we strengthened the team in other areas. I still hold to the same logic but it is risky and I'm less confident now it seems to be a reality. I suspect it is the 3 year deal that appeals to Gordy most. He has been a great servant to us. It is certainly time for Sean and Lesci to step up now. Ferry and another striker on permanents now please.

dont you think its a bit suspicious as to why wilson has released a statement telling Morrison to make the step up this morning. Then this afternoon we hear greer has been sold. Ready made replacement i feel. To accquire someone of Greers ability usually requires a decent sized transfer fee. You cant just hit the jackpot each time like we did with austin last season. Lets hope all of that 250,000 gets put back into a centre back of similar ability.

As much as I liked GG I don't see this as being a big loss, I trust DW to replace with better, GG had a tendency to give a lot of freekicks away late on in games which cost us/nearly cost us a lot last year and didn't help with the panicky last 10 minutes we experienced far to many times last year.

We need a centre back with pace and I think last year the partnership between JFL and cuthbert was a great bonus last year when called on!

Keep the faith!!!

I think this is sheer lunacy; Gordo has been the backbone of the defence since the first game he played for us. He turned round what was a disasterous mishmash into a semplance of defensive order. Not only that but he is a top bloke as well. We missed his heading dominance at Wembley. Cuthbert and Morrison won't be able to fill the skills gap IMHO. 'Hope Danny has a replacement lined up.....

I think this is a good decision by the club. There is no doubt he is a good defender but he has his faults. The main one being he can't manage a whole season. The last ten games or so there was no doubt he struggled to keep up with the pace of a promotion challenge. His distribution, discipline and ability to lead the side was all suffered and although we went through he really let everyone down against Charlton....Ithink the younger players lost quite a bit of respect for him that day. I'd be more concerened if Scotty was off as he is by far the superior defender. And baguette we beat you home and away this season (at your place was our reserves).

I am sure Danny has a plan in place and there are plenty of defenders out there readily available on free's. If so then its good business. Morrison was wanted by Southend and he should be bought on further by our club as he has been wasted on the bench. I think Sean offers us a lot more than Greer and certainly has the long throw in his arsenal. Sean is only a youngster but is coming on like a seasoned pro so in respect although I am shocked by the move we certainly have Lesci and Morrison who can fill that position and like others have said Greer did have his faults with free kick giveaways at crucial times the biggest. Matters will unfold in good time so may be someone has become available to promt this move.

Cos MM was a genius bit of business... Very strange letting GG go and £250K is not enough. We should be building a squad and he should be part of it regardless of who else DW has in mind. I think this comes down to AFs contract policy of 1 or 2 years. This cost us badly with Cox and is costing us again.

I would be somewhat more perplexed if Scott Cuthbert had been taken away! Lesci is good enough in central defence to start the season - his distribution is by far better than Greer's. His positioning needs a bit of work but overall I don't think a panic buy is required. Sean can back up either Scott or Lesci until we know if any replacement(s) are required. I don't think it is panic stage as yet!

We will see what you think of Greer after a few games. Good player but certainly gives away too many free kicks in very poor places at critical times in games. We do have better defenders at the club and may well have a replacement lined up so good business as we got him free so thanks for the money. Prutton turned down your club simply because he wants to get into the championship, says it all really.

ok, let's consider the facts. Gordon came on a free and was a huge influence in keeping us up. Last season a team was built around him which made the play-offs. He is now 29 and the club would love to keep him for the rest of his contract which is one year. He is not getting any younger and if Doncaster thought he was not quick enough for the Championship two years ago, he certainly isn't going to be in his thirties. Danny knows it, Fitton knows it, Gordon knows it. So along comes a club who just avoided relegation last season and are keen to stabilise in League 1. They offer Gordon a 3 year deal, more money and the chance to play football at a level he feels comfortable. He wants that security and asks to move. Danny and AF hold out until the fee reaches 250k (probably plus bits) - a huge return on their investment, but we all know, when a player has made his mind up, all his club can really do is hold out for the best price. They will now seek to replace him with someone they know can cut it in the Championship. Clearly they believe Morrison is up to the task and has his best years ahead of him, but if they are concerned about needing more experience in the short term, there are plenty of options available. All in all, without necessarily seeking this outcome, I am sure DW and AF will see it as an opportunity to move the club forward again. Good luck Gordon - hope you don't mind a season on the Withdean after the quality pitch at the CG !

Just got back off holiday today to see this news. Not surprised if I'm honest and good business sense I think. Didn't GG & SC seem to have disagreements of a sort towards the latter stages of last season. I personally trust DW & AF to ensure good cover is obtained for this loss. I presume Douglas is the inevitable captain for next season.

Great post. I think is a bit of pragmatism from Greer. An expensive 3 yr contract is to good to turn down at nearly 30, even if its a step down to begin with. It'll be at least another yr before Brighton threaten the playoffs. There also playing a dangerous game relying on one owner providing all the funds. Throwing around long and hefty contracts is a gamble. Thats why I respect what our board are doing. If both teams repective owners walked away we'd prob survive, Brighton would sink without trace.

So I really hope DW has a replacement lined up, as we need to get off to a flyer this year (as Fitton/WIlson have already said) and having things right at the back is fundamental to anything else.

Initially a bit surprising, but I think a number of the comments have been spot on. Not good enough for the Championship and getting up there in years. For all his qualities as a captain, mistake prone, and helps explain why we conceded as many as we did last season - too many. I think a key point is that Cuthbert was clearly losing faith in him, and is younger and better. Let's hope Morrison can push on and realize his talent, We need to get some of the good youth players moving up and becoming strong professionals. With Prutton and Douglas in the midfield, think we shall have strong leadership at the core of the side.

Big fan of Big Gord, but it was obvious last season he'd lost his legs.
A 3 year deal will see him nicely into retirement. If we want promotion we can't keep conceding stupid goals in the final minutes. Why are people so surprised when the club announced Dougie as captain for 10/11.

Greer's loan signing kept us out of Div II, we are all grateful for that. However, The only way that Greer was going to leave before the end of his contract was if he wanted to leave. He obviously wanted to leave, possibly just for a longer contract. 250,000 quid is a decent fee these days with many clubs in trouble and more players available. Better 250,00 now than 50,000 in January. After the play-off final, Mr. Fitton was very clear that there were going to be many changes this year but the spine will stay intact. Just watch Cutthroat step and run that defense. Yes we do need another CB, but not necessarily ahead of anyone already at the club.

Maybe we'll get you in one of the cups so you will get to see it for yourselves. Danny Wilson, isn't he the nearly man?? With the players you have lost maybe you will be playing at the new lawns the following season!!!

Ever heard of a certain Glenn Murray? This is him scoring the first of a brace while seeing off the challenge of Southampton last season. Just look at the fans celebrating. They'll be another top striker on the way. While you lot are jumping in the bins looking for 2 bit loan signings. Welcome home Gordon.

he is a good header, a good leader, but ultimately isn't a good enough player these days.

we have better players waiting in the wings. Morrisson to get a chance or and I'd prefer to let Lescinel have the spot as he's a young man with a lot of talent.

dw & af are building a squad and building it right...good financial sense to let him go. roll on august, be nice to see a new team out there.

Without knowing all the facts, you come on here and absolutley the slate the management. For selling a player and not even our best. I.e rank your top 3 players for the last 10 games of the season. Greer in that list?

I sincerely hope we are top 2 by Christmas. Then I will take great satisfaction in reminding you of the small minded comments from this thread.

Here's hoping you've got other plans for the 7th august. As, god help us if we concede an early goal. How long before we hear "fitton out".

I can accept that at 29 and with one year to go on his contract, Greer might well have have been interested in going. For the same reasons i think that this is a reasonable deal for the club.
What I find hard to take (assuming the Adver is correct about the fee) is that he seems to be going for the same fee that we loudly and bullishly turned down a few weeks ago.
I would much rather we had no more club statements like "I wouldn't get out of bed for such and such amount of money".
Please Mr Fitton walk the walk as well as talk the talk in future and at least tell us quickly exactly why we seem to have done a U Turn.

Huddersfield last season, Brighton this season, setting themselves up for a major fall. Looks guys, Greer would not be leaving if Fitton and Wilson didn't want him to. Greer would not be leaving unless a replacement at least as good as Greer has been lined up. Greer was OK, nothing more. Our gain is Brightons loss. 250 grand for a near 30 year old with no pace, funny really.

Swindon have sold captain Gordon Greer to Brighton for 250k, he will sign a three year contract on monday. Swindonwill not sign a replacment centre half as they have Cuthbert, Morrison and Jean–Francois who can play there as well as Amankwaah and young Will Evans at a push. Instead they will put the money towards the double deal for Celtic duo Simon Ferry and Paul Caddis. As well as these two they have agreed a dealwith Manchester City for a season long loan for striker David Ball they are also chasing a more experienced striker someone like Adebayo Akinfenwa, Paul Benson or Marvin Morgan. And i also noticed......Ross Perry (Rangers)
Dedryck Boyata (Man City)
Martin Kelly (Liverpool)

Stephen Darby is a possible signing, as are Simon Ferry, Paul Caddis and Cillian Sheridan all from Celtic..........anyb

He marked a real turning point in the fortunes of stfc that we will learn to appreciate properly only in a year or more when we are in the Chamionship. Why do you let a few Brighton fans wind you up into such a lather when he is still OUR player. If we choose to seel and he wants to go - it will be on the terms we decide. We have the power in this situation - please please please be a bit more respectful to a man who is a credit to our club.

Bigging up Morrison, photoshoots and repeated enquiries made it all likely for the deal to go through and no real surprise to most....JP next?

He's been a great servant but 250K for him is very good business. He is too slow for where we want to go and was guilty of giving far too many unucessary freekicks away around the box.

Can anyone HONESTLY say that Douglas isn't a good replacement captain!?

Come on pessimists and doubters - this club are going somewhere and the 5 year plan will have it's changes - butwhen was the last time we sold a player for 250K AND were reinvesting and strengthening with gusto at the same time!?

We will survive this and to the contrary we will do very well from it I think.....In DW and AF we trust!!

If Gordy goes then good luck to the guy a 3 year deal at this stage of his career is excellent news for him. As for leaving the Town well he came in a did a marvelous job keeping us in Division one the season before last and started very well last season but the cracks unfortunately appeared and he was getting caught out for pace and giving those needless free kicks away which seemed to result in most of those late goals against. I like Greer but rate Cuthbert well above him and feel that Lesci and Morrison have far much more to offer with them both being so young. As much as I liked Greer and would rather he stay this is superb business by the club 250k for a 29 year old, and as much as I respect Gordon for his time hear he is replaceable no doubt which you could not say about some of the other players. Greer wore his heart on his sleeve and was a fantastic leader but had showed flaws in his game and the main question in all this is "could we replace him"?? I think Danny and AF have answered that.Best of Luck Gordon Greer if you do leave and thanks for your time hear at Swindon.

Difference between Austin and Greer is that we allowed Greer to go. Austin is not for sale, unless you place a couple of million in front of your 250 grand. Remember Brighton fans, you have millionaire owners, we have billionaire owners. We have more money, bigger fan base, better squad, better manager, etc, etc, etc. Good luck for the coming season though....your gonna need it. Oh, a half empty shiny new stadium does not ensure promotion, sorry!!!

I can understand Brighton trying to wind us up. They're on a bit of a high and I would probably do the same. Greer is clearly an improvement on what they've got; we will have to wait for the other side of the coin to see whether we improve on Greer.

Certainly as people have pointed out he had his faults - lack of pace being the most worrying one. But he was composed and a leader of men, and there's lots of those in Brighton.

Fitton running a tight ship, balancing the books rather than spending their own cash (and why should they?), and offering only 1 or 2-year contracts will mean we see more of this at Swindon. People might feel aggrieved that we rejected a fee of £250,000 a couple of weeks ago and then let him go for the same money, and I'm one of them. Not great business as Brighton clearly wanted him, they have funds, and Greer was under contract. Yet we only got £250,000 for Henshall - that was much more of an undersell.

Hey-ho. Got to give Morrison a chance sometime otherwise why have a youth pipeline?

And we'd better get a move on in the transfer market. We've lost Paynter, Greer, Ward, Ferry, Sheehan, Darby, Easton, Marshall, Nouble (and Henshall), and replaced them with Prutton and Rose.

In the Master Plan, we're meant to be kicking on from last season and improving on that team!

Typical Brighton fans on here I see. If you want a direct comparison between the 2 clubs then you only have to look at a player that both clubs try to sign I.e. Prutton, and see who he chooses. Greer will only leave if we let him, we aren't in competition with Brighton over him, we can and will get better. Nearly feel sorry for Brighton if that is the best they can get. Their club obviously doesn't share the same ambition as their fans on here.

Earlier this week, Town manager Danny Wilson said he did not want to sell the 29-year-old defender but admitted that every player has a price.

The Robins boss said: "If they're serious and they want to take our captain, who's a big player for us, then that comes with a price.

I don't mind a bit of banter. But get real.

Nice use of the word skint. How ironic your lot used to have it printed across your shirt.

You play for years at the local athletic club and have the cheek to criticise our ground. Which for the record is due to be rebuilt from the end of this season.

And as for financial backing. You better get on wikipedia. Messers black, wray and fitton have a few quid between them. In fact I think they've put something around the £7m Mark into the club over the past 3 years.

Hope your new riches are not on credit. Or I fear for you it may all end in tears!

That is probably true, from the little I saw of him last season, he did look quality. Lots of experience along side of him though. Could miss that this year .
Best time of the year, expectation is high we all know our team will win the league whoever we support (except Blackpool). And the banter and wind ups start already with complete strangers. Thank goodness for football !! Official Greer has joined us pending medical.

It seems to me that an increasing number of the new squad for next season will be loan players, hence saving the club any major financial commitments. Brighton are now investing (with bargain buys like Greer),and I am afraid we will have to invest in some squad players who are not loan players if we are to make any sustained push for promotion. Due to having to many loan signings last season,we now have no idea what to expect from what will be an almost completely new look squad. We need consistancy and our own players, and I very much doubt anything will be achieved until AF & co start to cough up some more cash on playing staff.

Great post by Fredi. Greer is slow - like watching Terry in South Africa. And all of those late goals conceded - we would have been top-two leave alone the play-offs without those aberrations. This is a great piece of business for Town and gives Morrison the perfect opportunity to grow. He was MOTM for Southend more than once last season and he is ready. No point in developing young players without giving them the chance.

No point in developing young players without giving them the chance. david waldron

As its official I want to say thanks Gordy you were great for us when we needed leadership and some stability on the pitch .Wish you well mate.
We have seen that the coaching of PS and DW has already improved key players such as JP, Manks, Lesci and Cuthbert too who had very little first team experience before joining us. How about Ferry and Ward didn't they benefit from that same coaching ability too. If they judge that the young lads are ready they owe it to the club to push them on. They probably would have kept Gordy to the end of his contract but business is business. Douglas and Prutton in front will be stronger than last year. I think the money (and we do not know what it is) will be invested in bringing Ferry "home" and possibly Caddis. (midfield need is greater) There is real quality potential in the possible loanees so we will be stronger next season. Can't wait!

This post has got a bit boring now. Bottom line Gordy was a great player during his loan period and for 90% of this season was excellent as well. And it is possible we might miss him. However, we still have real quality at the back in Scotty, Rose and Lucas as the replacements we already have aren't half bad either. Swindon are one of the best run clubs in the country. Its a dangerous game relying on one investor. I like the fact our club is being built up piece by piece. The fact that we attract sponsors like EA games and Samsung, have loan agreement with Liverpool, Man City and Celtic and can attract players like Prutton on our ambition as oppose to big money. That says a lot about our club and we will be near the top of the league without a doubt. As for Brighton, no doubt this is a massive signing for you and will easily be your big name of the summer. Your clearly going to be moving in the right direction but it takes excellent management, experience and talent throughout the team to move from relegation contenders to promotion chasers in one season. I think after last season you would be pleased with top half finish and build from there. That would be a great season and leave in a good spot for going to your new ground.

I can't believe some of the comments on here. We signed Greer for nothing and have sold him for 250K a year later. It's time to face facts, we were punching above our weight last season and our financial situation doesnt bear thinking about, we are one deal away from Administration. In a few years things may improve, but we must face facts, we have just lost our captain to a side with no debts and who are building a £100m stadium with no loans, Arsenal couldnt do that !!!! I would be delighted with mid table.

Will he be a regular for next three seasons at Brighton? I doubt it. He was probably at a maximum of fort-four league games away from no longer being a town player.

It was a good bit of business for Swindon Town. It's over, move on.

I don't doubt you are a true red but you do seem somewhat mis-informed. Allow me to correct you. Your correct about our excellent bit of business in shifting GG for 250k but we certainly weren't punching above our weight. We beat Leeds twice, Saints twice and Charlton were lucky to twice come away with a point twice against us. Had we got one win away against Saints for example then that would be pure luck. And quite the contrary about a financial situation. We are now built on solid financial ground with very wealthy owners prepared to make up any shortfall and now big comercial names want to be associated with us - such as EA Sports and Samsung (who are simply content with sponsoring our third choice Addidas made kit). And as for Brightons new stadium, its about time they got a football ground isn't it? It must be so embarrasing having to go to the local schools athletics ground week in week out. Thankfully, being a town fan, you get to go to a proper football ground with real stands and everything. And just think, how silly is their £100mil stadium going to look half empty in league 1. You Reds!

Thanks Brighton for bagging us Ferry and Caddis from Celtic that is excellent business from our part to get two young players with massive potential that can only get better for our captain Gordon Greer who was a very good player no doubt but as I and many Town fans have indicated he does have his faults and best to leave you to judge him after a dozen or so games. It sadly was fact that Gordon was getting left for dead towards the end of the season but the free kicks issue was the worst of his faults. He did save us from relegation when he came here but my main feeling was when I heard of the interest from Brighton could we afford to lose him and was he replaceable and the answer I came up with was yes and yes. We have a better defender in Cuthbert and also have two youngsters in Morrison and Lescinel with certainly bags of potential and could easily replace Greer. Good Luck Gordy a 3 year deal is magic for you and thank you moneybags Brighton for funding two major purchases for the Town.

Yes, it's a shame because he has done a good job in his year and a half at the club. However, he has his faults (as mentioned several times already) and is replaceable, either from within or with a new signing. Liam Chilvers and Jay DeMerit are available on frees at the moment and I for one would love to see either of those two in red this season.

I suppose you have to consider the end result. To my mind, Greer improved steadily throughout last season. The player leaving us is better & more consistent, than the player we acquired.

Is £250k worth the investment made by Wilson & his coaches ?

Absolutely not. He shouldn't be leaving for anything less than £350k+.

Forgetting about Greer.. I'm more concerned about what we have left.

Scottie Cuthbert remains the best central defender at the club by a million miles.

(In my opinion), JLF & Morrison are average L1 players at best - simply not good enough to provide defence for a team seeking promotion.

(Part of the reason we lost the play-off final was due to JLF's lack of pace against the speedy Millwall attack).

Why is it the Town seem much more capable of selling players, than buying players ?

Pre-season training is now well under way. DW needs to get moving & splashing some cash on the right new players.

We can't afford to wait until November - like we did last year.

That alone probably meant the difference between promotion & failure in 08/09.

OK Greer has gone, 1 year left we paid most likely high wages????? now we have 250.000k good deal for Town

However RFose and prutton signed on freebies no doubt thet will be on good wages also.

If AF is serious about mounting a promotion challange he and the board will need to spend money. I realise loanees can assist but can a club expect fans to fork out money for a team of lonees?????

Before you all do one and jump down my throat, AF quite right will try every angle to run the club in a fit and proper manner, my only fear is loanees can be recalled at anytime. So just maybe the club can fork out for an additonal 3 players either purchase or freebies.

I hate to sound negative but as normal we allways appear to be late in bringing new players in..
No doubt I will be proved wrong, it just feels the same as seasons gone by hope I am totally wrong, but all this talk ref Charlie Austin as well, no smoke without fire.

Anyways no matter who we get in good luck to the Town
