THE fight for the right-midfield berth in Town’s all-time greatest eleven turned out to be a contest between father and son.

And it was Mike Summerbee that came out on top ahead of son Nicky in the vote by Advertiser readers.

Mike took just over half of the overall vote while Nicky emerged with 14 per cent, finishing second ahead of David Moss.

As a teenager, Mike Summerbee signed for Town in the late 50s and quickly became a fans’ favourite, with supporters admiring his pace, skill and pinpoint crossing ability.

The wide man made his debut in the home game against Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic in December 1959 and went on make 14 further appearances that season.

He was part of the team that won promotion to Division Two in 1962/63, scoring six goals and being one half of the revered winger double act that included the great Don Rogers.

Summerbee was at Town for two further successful campaigns but was sold to Manchester City just two games into the 1965/66 season, and went on to represent his country eight times, as well as later appearing in the Sylvester Stallone film, “Escape to Victory”.

Nicky Summerbee signed a professional contract in Wiltshire in July 1989 and made one appearance in the first team in 1989/90.

After having limited opportunities for two years, he was an integral part of the 1992/93 promotion-winning side and the team that experienced an ill-fated Premier League campaign the following season.
