SWINDON TOWN: Sheehan delighted to arrive at club 'on the up'

FULL-BACK Alan Sheehan has admitted his loan move to the County Ground was brokered because he felt he was being frozen out at Leeds.

Sheehan has joined Swindon on a one-month deal as he aims to get match-time under his belt, with the Irishman’s opportunities at Elland Road appearing limited under Simon Grayson.

The 23-year-old was a mainstay in the Leeds team under Gary McAllister but since Grayson replaced the Scot in December last year, Sheehan has spent time away on loan at Crewe, Oldham and now Town.

“Gary McAllister signed me and I was the first choice left-back and playing every game,” Sheehan told the Advertiser.

“A new manager comes in and straight away you’re not in his plans.

“You have to come to terms that you’re not going to play under this manager no matter what you do, so I think it’s important for me to come out and play games.

“I felt that I wasn’t going to be playing under Simon Grayson. If that means loans, you’ll go out and play as many times as you want.”

The defender revealed he had several loan options to choose from, but was convinced to move to Town by the presence of former teammates Jonathan Douglas and David Lucas.

“I chat to Dougie (Jonathan Douglas) quite often. Him and David Lucas are both good friends of mine,” said Sheehan.

“He (Douglas) told me that it was very good down here, but I don’t think he really had to sell the club.

“From a football point of view, Dougie is probably one of the best midfielders in this division and David Lucas is easily one of the best goalkeepers in this division.

“That just shows me straight away the type of players that are here and the type of push that they want to do. I’m very excited because it’s a team on the up.”

Sheehan, who has a year and a half left on his contract at Leeds, would not be drawn on whether he was interested in a permanent stay in Wiltshire.

He could be in line for a debut this afternoon as Town travel to the Racecourse Ground for a second round FA Cup tie with Wrexham.
