Swindon Town chairman hails Cox deal

ANDREW Fitton is confident Town have done ‘the right deal’ in selling striker Simon Cox to West Brom.
The 32-goal hitman signed a two-year deal at the Championship outfit yesterday after new Hawthorns boss Roberto Di Matteo authorised the transfer.
And Town chairman Fitton said every aspect of the £1.9million deal had been done to the full satisfaction of both player and club.
He also revealed that Town could profit from negotiating a sell-on clause with the Midlands club for the 22-year-old, although he refused to disclose what percentage Town would receive.
“It was important it was a proper deal and it was the right one,” said Fitton.
“It’s a win all-round.
“He scored goals, was popular with the crowd and didn’t cost us very much.He’s got the right move and we’ve got financial reward.
“From the moment we (the two clubs) agreed we never had any questions that the deal would not go through.
“West Brom’s offer was the best offer and we went back to them and said, ‘We think you’re the right club’.
“We asked them to make a couple of changes, which they did. They were great people to deal with and that’s important.”
And when asked what the specific benefits of the deal were for Town, Fitton said: “There was an amount that was guaranteed and add-ons we will get, because he will play football for West Brom.
“These are the kind of things we’ve taken into account.
“You’re dealing with the clubs you want to deal with and it was the right place for him to go.
“Once it was known that we might be willing to sell him, we had six or seven clubs that talked to us but the offer from West Brom was the best offer.”
Town will receive £900,000 for Cox straight up from West Brom and it is believed that £600,000 will be passed on to Reading as part of a sell-on clause, which the clubs negotiated before the striker arrived in Wiltshire.
The Robins may get up to £400,000 in add-ons from the Baggies, depending on how Cox performs for the Championship club.
Fitton added that he felt Cox’s career path was one that was becoming increasingly prevalent in modern football.
He said: “If you’re a young player, unless you happen to be Wayne Rooney, you’re better off starting out at a lower league football club, rather than getting lost in a big club.
“More and more players are going to realise that they are better off coming to clubs like Swindon where they get a chance to shine, and they are given the opportunity to move on if that’s the right thing to do.
“You can use Simon Cox as a model example.”

Sounds to me like Reading have the better of this deal! £900k in and £600k out right away. £300k tops top find a replacement. No mention of how long we have to waite for the add-ons before we see the real benefit of the sale.

As an example, when Ipswich sold Sam Parkin we received nothing even though we had a sell-on clause as they sold him for a loss.

Oh and Tite_Fitt, wouldn't it be better for him not to reveal potential replacements for Cox? And as fans we're not expected to be told the exact money Wilson will be given from the Cox deal, but an interview on the Radio yesterday made it clear he'll get a fair amount of the money. You're just another example of fans demanding to know too much.

I think the 600k figure is wrong. Assuming the sell-on is 40%, that is 40% of the *profit* ie 1.3m.
40% of 1.3m is 520,000 leaving us with 980,000.

We sold Simon for £1,500,000 up front + £400,000 in potential addons.
If Reading had a 40% sell on clause (not necessarily the 'profit') on that £1.5 mil, then the simple maths works as below...
£900,000 (60%)
+£600,000 +(40%)
=£1,500,000 =(100%)
So town will see £900k directly, + up to £400k if Cox does really well and moves onto even bigger and better things, then town could really cash in!

40% of £900,000 = £360,000. If Reading got £600,000 out of our £900,000 that would be 66.66% not 40%. That really would be a bad deal for STFC lol.

When are some of you going to get it in to your thick heads COX was never going to stay here he would have probably refused to play if we blocked a move and end up going for pittance in January.
I have faith that DW will be given the majority of the best part of a million quid to and get the 5 quality players he is after, but quality players are normally being chased by others so we will win some and lose others.
I think we may see a signing or two before saturday mornings flight.

I do think the article isn't very well worded but it only takes someone with half a brain to work out that those sums don't add up and relate to yesterdays article.

Well said Fitton. It's this attitude that will make it easier to attract young talent as they know they will be looked after and if they do well can be rewarded with a move that is right for them. The sell on clause we have could be vital if Cox makes it big!

In this climate our club got a good deal, and regardless of what we need to pay Reading in this financial climate our club got the best deal they could.
Think back to 2 years ago we were skint, AF came in sorted out all the financial problems paid 200,000 pounds for Simon Cox.
At the end of the coming season Simon Cox would have been a free agent, ok we would have got something as to his age.
Am fed up of posts saying we were ripped off.
In reply to that we got a player for 2 seasons who played his socks off and deserved to be playing in a higher division.
So at the ennd of the day our club I feel have done as well as they could and considering our sitauation we should give thanks to the Board.
make no bones we will get semi decent replacements soon.
So again well done to our club

However, the priority has got to be getting a replacement (and more). The thing we do not need is more of the Fitton dithering around this. It really is getting pretty close to the wire because DW must need the squad together as the preparatory games start.
We do not yet have the depth and quality needed for the season so come on AF, get it done and support DW.

I'd imagine we did that instead of just paying a transfer fee because the transfer fee Hibs were asking for was more than what it would cost to release Alan from his contract.

No if youre looking at it like that, that weve paid £250k initially and now a further £600k then when we receive the full 1.5mil then we still come out of it with 1.5mil after paying £850k. What ever way you look at it we have made around £700k from the first instalment of the sale, then include the add ons and the sell on clause we have actually made a decent amount of money for the boy.
Yes we would all loved to have seen many more naughts on the end of his valuation but to be honest it isnt a bad price for our league. He could have fetched more as we were a team at the wrong end of the table with one of the best strikers weve seen for a long while. Had we been top of the league more teams would have sat up and noticed him. As for Reading getting 40% sell on if we hadnt agreed to that then we would never have got him in the first place. We can unearth another gem we seem to have a funny knack of finding prolific strikers. We will come good.

Instead we should all be concerned about how our share of the cash will be used. Hopefully the money will be spent wisely and overall the team will be strengthened rather than weakened with the sale of Cox. That should be the aim.
