Di Matteo delight at swoop for Swindon Town ace Cox

WEST Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo has spoken of his delight after completing the £1.9 million transfer Swindon Town striker Simon Cox.

Town's 32-goal top scorer was confirmed as a Baggies player this lunchtime, joining on a two-year contract, plus a further two years' option after passing his medical at the Hawthorns.

Di Matteo told West Brom's official website: "Simon is an exciting, young talent with bags of ambition, hunger and determination.

"He has a very good goalscoring record and I think he will be a great asset for our team next season.

"I've seen him many times and he has the ability to do well in the Championship.

"He had a lot of interest from other clubs, including one or two Premier League clubs, and we are very happy that he has signed for us.''

Town will receive a guaranteed £1.5million straight up, with a further £400,000 due in performance-related add-ons. That will equal - and could surpass -Town's record transfer fee received from Manchester City for Kevin Horlock in 1997.

I think Danny probably sells Swindon Town to the players he wants and then waits patiently while they mull over any other options. Persistent badgering could suggest desperation and drive prices up.He`s doing OK - so far !

Rose was all set to join Hartlepool, but instead has chosen to remain at Stockport. Something to do with him being excited about the new owners coming in, think it was on the BBC site fella.

There is no way we'll manage to get another striker in before the end of the month, despite wilson saying that hes actively trying to sign at least 1 before saturday.

We're doomed! DOOMED I TELL THEE!

Would be a nightmare come true and if Maurice the Muppet was still in charge likely to happen. But with DW at the helm I'm prepared to bet £1million it won't.

Mind you, I'm not so sure we'll have signed anymore players by the weekend. Which means P&P will be the only 2 strikers we'll be taking to Austria. Oooops think I'd better cancel that bet!!!

what is the big deal with akinfenwa paynter is twice as quick twice as much a team player prob had twice as many assists. parkin situation is boring now get over it. gotta agree with reid though think he will be a good signing. but your are entitled to your opinion. think we need 2 ST 1CM (pref douglas) and a LB

I agree that Danny needs to sign at least another 2 strikers plus midfielder. Whats happened to Douglas? With the team we have at the moment we would get absolutely slaughtered by the Gills in our opening game.

I think Akinfenwa would be good. Better target man than Paynter. Paynter 3rd choice striker and Peacock would be NO choice striker for me!

There's no way we could afford Lambert. We could buy Akinfenwa AND Reid and still have change left from the money we'd need to spend to buy Lambert!!

With about £750K going to Reading it won't leave us a lot to spend on a proven striker or two. OK we got Coxy for £200k, but they don't come in bunches of ten! Good luck DW we need to get those 30 goals from somewhere.

As to Lambert who knows why not, but agree with posts it would be silly.

Are you serious? Lita would bag a hatload at this level and if he felt loved he'd probably score 2 hatloads. He's done it at prem level so yes I'd have him along.

lita would score more than akinfenwa.his scoring record is good and would bang them in.he would be a great signing.scored goals in prem and championship and i believe he is avaliable.

All this Peacock baiting is a bit out of order.

He has now had 3 operations on his back in the last few months, was playing in agony for months and I suspect he will not travel to Austria on account he's still in hospital.

Before you go slating players, check your facts...!!

All a bit depressing really. Reminds us of our status.

Seems like only a few weeks ago we were turning down bids of £2m in search of £2.5m, and now we accept £1.5m. Reading get 40% of this leaving us with £900k. Some of this will go to meeting the costs of running STFC and so we'll be shopping for bargains again.

Agree with above poster. We need THREE strikers not one, and Paynter isn't good enough to be a guaranteed starter. While we could replace Sturrock with a cat in a bag, Corr and Cox are what we have to improve upon.

Sad fact is that we are a mediocre first division club, and until we somehow break out of this cycle, we'll remain a selling club, and crowds won't be high enough to pay wages to attract better players.

Just have to hope DW can pull the cat out of the bag.

where has all of this talk of one striker come from. DW only said last week he wanted 2 anyway, even if coxy stayed.

IMO, we need 1 full back (who could possibly play both lB and RB), a centre mid, douglas or someone else of that sort of ability ie. a leader who will be a key player and 2 strikers ideally one young striker and possibly one more experienced front man (Michael Bridges or someone along those lines)

Ideally (for me, one should be in the cox mould and we should have one who is good in the air as we now have 2 good wingers.

Definitely not good enough.

Were you actually there last season, when Maurice's muppets lost game after game ?

Let's get 1 thing straight - we only stayed up last season due to Coxy's goals.

Without a Cox quality replacement, we're going down - fast.

Paynter is a great bench player, and did ok last season, (can't fault his effort), but he becomes useless, when there's no-one there of any quality to smash in the goals.

As things stand, I think we'd be expected to go down with the bookies, (pending more new faces).

I do believe that a lot of last years squad underperformed !! That doesn't mean they aren't good enough now with DW !! They were under pressure due to our performances with MM and it was very difficult to get the belief into them when DW came, but you are right that without Cox we would have been relegated, so we need a replacement...

Eh, No!
I'll refer you to todays interview with AF "a sell on clause with WBA will be dicussed but he refused to disclose a percentage figure"! How much do you think WBA would sell Coxy for if he proved he could hack it in the championship/ premiership?????????

madterrier, says...
6:09pm Thu 9 Jul 09

Don't kid yourself that Reading don't have a sell-on clause. They do, and it's 40%. Swindon's Chief Executive Nick Watkins told me this to my face, and he handles the paperwork, to put it mildly. I'm sure he would rather that there wasn't such a clause.

These sell-on clauses are all about negotiating strength and how desperate/reluctant one party is to buy/sell that player.
