BREAKING NEWS: Cox's Baggies move confirmed

WEST Bromwich Albion have confirmed the signing of Town's top scorer Simon Cox in a £1.9 million deal.

The widely-expected move for Town's 32-goal top scorer was rubber-stamped in a statement on the Baggies' website.

Cox, 22, has joined the Midlands side on a two-year contract, plus a further two years' option after passing his medical at the Hawthorns.

Town will receive a guaranteed £1.5million straight up, with a further £400,000 due in performance-related add-ons.

That will equal - and could surpass - Town's record transfer fee received from Manchester City for Kevin Horlock in 1997.

Cox's move ends a long pursuit of the striker by Albion, who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season. Championship side Leicester were also interested before pulling out of the race last month.

Former Baggies' chief Tony Mowbray and his staff watched the frontman on four occasions last season before it was announced last week that Town had accepted an offer in the region of £2 million.

Mowbray subsequently moved on to Celtic, but new chief Roberto Di Matteo gave the green light for the move to go ahead, Cox becoming his first signing.

Town bought Cox from Reading for around £200,000 in January 2008, with Royals expected to receive up to 40 per cent of the Albion fee, as part of a sell-on clause.

is a bit of a let down but its still 1.5m in the coffers.
I know its been said millions of times and is a widely know "fact" but has anyone ever actually confirmed the 40% sell on fee to reading or is it something that has come from the forums and taken as fact?
I've never seen or heard anyone at either club confirm or even hint at 40%.

At least its sorted now.

Assuming we do have to give 40% of his fee to Reading that will leave us with 60%. So 60% of 1.5million is £900,000 cash for us immediately with a further 240k (our share of the remaining 400k to come)! I just hope this all goes to Danny to stregnthen the team? That is an immediate profit of 700k in one season and he also kept us in division 1, not a bad return on our 200k investment? As other posters have said above we urgently need at least 1 new striker and 2 full backs...with the Coxy money hopefully available we should be able to get some decent players in. Having said all that i am desperately sorry to see Simon go.

Sorry to see Simon go
and the fact that we are only going to get £900k NOW does put a bit of a dampner.I worry about add on's as if he gets an injury then we get zero!
Just hope that the board uses the cash for the team not to pay back any personal loans they used to take over the club!

I am very disappointed in the fee, Fitton comes out and states we will only accept £2.5m, but have actually accepted £1.5m + add ons. I am also surprised/ disappointed that we haven;t insisted on a sell on clause considering we have to pay Reading so much!

Even Angrier Monkey, Swindon says...

It depends what the add ons are really dosnt it?

If its 100 international caps then its not such a good deal, but I suspect it is appreance, goal and promotion based

i think the fact that no other club showed serious interest meant AF had no choice but to accept the offer from WBA. I will be really annoyed and suprised if there is no sell on clause, AF is a tough business man so i am sure there is. On the Baggies board some of their supporters said they have a really good young promising forward who we should take on a season loan...this was a good opportunity to do that which has now been missed. Maybe Danny is looking for more experienced players?

I have just listened to Fitton on BBC website. Didn;t mention a sell on clause and also stated that we have paid money to hibs to release Andy O'brien. If this is the case why wasn;t it documented in the first place. I think this is another smoke screen to avoid paying transfer fees for players. Would be interested to hear what others thought of the article.

keeping us up will always mean no matter how he treats us when leaving, he will still always remain a town great in my book, but ive seen a number of players moving on this summer who have publicly come out and thanked the fans for their support, and i think he needs to remember that no championship clubs were clambering to sign him when we did, so he owns swindon town alot for his footballin education, i wish him good luck but i feel with the news on how the transfer is structured and coxs dis regard for the fans, we might all be left with a slightly bitter taste in are mouths come pre season!!

I love how your first thought is; "oh this means Fitton's trying to avoid paying transfer fees'. He clearly stated that O'Brien did cost a fee, but ALSO said there would be plenty more funds for Wilson to use. I hate people like you who's first thoughts are negative ones rather than positive.

wraxall, bath says...
4:32pm Wed 8 Jul 09

So Swindon Till I Die do you have an inside track to AF as just like dutchstfc29 I get the feeling that AF only told us today about having to pay for Obrian to not let us think that all the money from cox is going to be spent on the team.
It's alright him saying that we WERE
prepared to pay for OTJ and TR but we did'nt secure either
now we are told that we had to pay for Obrian so why not tell us what it is!
I'm not negative but we get so many mixed messages from AF I wish he would leave the talking to Danny Wilson.
He has'nt wanted to tell us how many season tickets have been sold since the special sales day cause if he had some of us who can use a calculator would be asking more questions on what AF is allowing for transfers ect.

dutchstfc29, Yatton Keynell says...
4:35pm Wed 8 Jul 09

Fair point.

I do feel rather negative today, we have just lost our best striker for less than I believe he is worth, we have missed out on a very good striker in Theo Robinson and have Paynter and Peacock as our main strikers currently. This is all fact!!

Good thing I have bought my new season ticket already and remain positive every weekend when I travel around the UK watching town!

Even Angrier Monkey, Swindon says...
4:59pm Wed 8 Jul 09

It still puzzles me why "trying to avoid paying transfer fees" is seen as a bad thing by some town fans. I spend my life trying not to pay for stuff, or at least get a good deal on it.

Fact is we've signed 3 players so far, one of which we know is very good (Greer) and the other 2 have a pedigree of playing at a higher level for most of thier careers. 2 of them did not cost a fee. we dont know what O'Brien cost but I doubt it was much.

Negative people say this means we lack ambition. I say this means we got a good deal.

As for OTJ and Robinson, OTJ joined a bigger club, probably on more money. Robinson stiched us for more money. What is Fitton supposed to do, just sign players on whatever wage they want?

I would assume that reading will only get 40% of the £1.5m, not our add-ons, and hopefully we'll have our own sell on clause of 40% as well, so if he reaches his potential at West Brom and maybe breaks the premiership, he may then be valued at £5m plus? Thats another £2m plus for Swindon? Who knows!

I'll say it again, thanks for everything Simon but where's your parting statement to the Swindon fans, thanking them for their support??

Come on we have got a good fee (not as much as he is worth IMO) but a fair return, we would be in lge 2 without his contribution now !!!

There are some decent strikers that we can get for some reasonable fees, I trust Fitton and Wilson to get the right player....

I'm Absolutely gutted. £1.5Million and a good percentage to Reading!!!!. Why is it we have all this ambition to get this Club to the Championship where we really belong but we sell our best players for well below our own valuation, don't get me wrong 1.5m is a good price but we'd have been better off keeping Cox can't see where we're going to get goals from next season.

Not to be on a downer but relegation fight again next season. I hope I'm proved wrong.

First off - Simon Cox, you may have been with us for only a short amount of time, but DUDE! Your a legend! Best striker at the club since Don Rogers! You will succeed at the highest level that you've desired. I'll be following your career with a careful eye, may see you back at the club one day in a Swindon Shirt.. Fingers crossed!

Now for the bits that are left over. 40% sell-on clause that Reading imposed, I hope the same was imposed on WBA if they ever sold him.. If not I'll be extremely disappointed. Secondly, I am extremely disappointed at the fee. 1.5million considering we paid an inital 200,000 for Cox, the 40% on top equals 800k to Reading PLUS the extra 'performance related clause', more than likely number of goals scored, Reading then take a further 160k So from Reading selling Cox, they have made 960k! Equal a profit of 940k! SO REALLY.. We have pretty much been given a player to develop and split the transfer fee with Reading! I feel that the club has been done over with a baseball bat, again.

Seriously disappointed with the total value, a 22 year old striker that scorer 32 goals in a season is worth more than 1.5million up front! 2.5million minimum + clauses. Totally f***ed over a barrel!
Still least we got more than we did for Parkin, and that was a ridiculous 400k fee! I thought we were starting to sell players at their true value, not undervalue?!

I'm a very unhappy Robin Fan! The only positive is that we have money to spend which is more to say that the previous dictatorship. I do believe as a club, we are moving in the right direction, even if Cox moving is a slight backstep, we should take pride in what Swindon have produced in Simon Cox and show that to any new unearthed gem. Fitton and Wilson, your creditentials are on the line to bring in a new hero! Give us new unborn superstar to cheer for!

BRING ON Season 09/10!

Get a grip. The reported 40% isn't even true. It's much less than that because Cox was on the last year of his contract, so we re-negotiated the sell-on and they agreed.

£2.5m minimum for a striker who plays in League One, is unproven anywhere else and had 1 good season? HAHA. You're a joke, there was not a chance of getting £2.5m minimum.
