DANNY Wilson insists his sales pitch more than stands up to scrutiny, as Swindon’s boss finally completed the capture of Irish winger Alan O’Brien.
Town will hold an official press conference this morning, but last night made free agent O’Brien their third summer signing following the captures of defender Gordon Greer and goalkeeper David Lucas.
The versatile wide man was released by Scottish Premier League side Hibernian last month, but Wilson made his move quickly to land the 24-year-old, and believes a quick look at the County Ground club was enough to convince the new man that Swindon are heading in the right direction.
“A lot of work has gone on in the background of the club.
“It’s nice to show it off to players and it is going in the right direction - I think players will appreciate that when they come down to look,” said Wilson.
“But ultimately it’s about the football - what type of player we can attract, what staff we’ve got at the club to help them develop their game, and what type of ambitions we’ve got at the club.
“All that will be taken on board and then the players we are targeting will make their decisions. But we are very confident that when we get them down we put a very good pitch to them.”
O’Brien was a highly-rated teenager at Newcastle, where he won all of his five international caps for the Republic of Ireland, but appeared to have lost his way slightly after moving to Easter Road.
However Wilson believes the County Ground is the perfect place for the wide man to re-establish his career.
“We are a club that wants to bring players on and give them another platform to play,” said the boss.
“We encourage young players to come to the club, because we think we are a fantastic stepping stone. And if we can gain success with those kids, then even better.”
Meanwhile, Simon Cox will be unveiled as a West Bromwich Albion player inside the next 24 hours, after the striker underwent a medical at the Hawthorns yesterday.
A £2million fee had already been agreed between the clubs, and with the 22-year-old accepting personal terms, a medical was the only formality left to conclude ahead of his switch to the Baggies.
FORMER Town duo Hamdi Razak and Michael Pook are both on trial at League Two outfit Crewe Alexandra.
Pook, who came up through the ranks at the County Ground before his release in May, came off the bench in Crewe’s 7-0 friendly win over Newcastle Town at the weekend.
French striker Razak also featured, scoring twice, and Alex boss Gudjon Thordarson said: “I thought he took his goals very well. He is way off being fit but he is worth another look at.”
Pook will begin a pre-arranged trial at Cheltenham Town this week, but Thordarson has admitted he is keen to take another look at the midfielder.

Coxy`s departure is now imminent and Danny must be well aware of the loss of striking power that goes with him. Whether he is able to get a replacement who blows our socks off remains to be seen but I dont think we shall have to wait long for the news we are all waiting for. COME ON YOU REDS !
Looks like 3 god signings, they were all freebies but never the less DW has made I feel a wise move. Lets face it he does know his way round the lower divisions. I like how he sold the club etc. Now comes the time for the other 2 or 3 players where he will need to spend a bit. I mentioned Huddersfield the other day, yes they have spent a few quid this season so far but they do get reasonable gates and if they are in the top 4 amounts spent will not be problem. Whereas us have spent nothing, get eeling DW will shock us all quite soon with a few signongs. Gate wisw we will do ok. look we struggled last year and gates for our division were reasonable. So all we need now is to have faith in DW and AF and Board

I hope that Michael Pook gets a contract at Crewe Alexandra or Cheltenham Town, he certainly deserves it.
I think in the final analysis he didn't quite make it at the County Ground, but only just !
A change of club might just put his career back on course - I hope so !
