Swindon Town: Wilson's talking it up

DANNY Wilson insists his sales pitch more than stands up to scrutiny, as Swindon’s boss finally completed the capture of Irish winger Alan O’Brien.

Town will hold an official press conference this morning, but last night made free agent O’Brien their third summer signing following the captures of defender Gordon Greer and goalkeeper David Lucas.

The versatile wide man was released by Scottish Premier League side Hibernian last month, but Wilson made his move quickly to land the 24-year-old, and believes a quick look at the County Ground club was enough to convince the new man that Swindon are heading in the right direction.

“A lot of work has gone on in the background of the club.

“It’s nice to show it off to players and it is going in the right direction - I think players will appreciate that when they come down to look,” said Wilson.

“But ultimately it’s about the football - what type of player we can attract, what staff we’ve got at the club to help them develop their game, and what type of ambitions we’ve got at the club.

“All that will be taken on board and then the players we are targeting will make their decisions. But we are very confident that when we get them down we put a very good pitch to them.”

O’Brien was a highly-rated teenager at Newcastle, where he won all of his five international caps for the Republic of Ireland, but appeared to have lost his way slightly after moving to Easter Road.

However Wilson believes the County Ground is the perfect place for the wide man to re-establish his career.

“We are a club that wants to bring players on and give them another platform to play,” said the boss.

“We encourage young players to come to the club, because we think we are a fantastic stepping stone. And if we can gain success with those kids, then even better.”

Meanwhile, Simon Cox will be unveiled as a West Bromwich Albion player inside the next 24 hours, after the striker underwent a medical at the Hawthorns yesterday.

A £2million fee had already been agreed between the clubs, and with the 22-year-old accepting personal terms, a medical was the only formality left to conclude ahead of his switch to the Baggies.

FORMER Town duo Hamdi Razak and Michael Pook are both on trial at League Two outfit Crewe Alexandra.

Pook, who came up through the ranks at the County Ground before his release in May, came off the bench in Crewe’s 7-0 friendly win over Newcastle Town at the weekend.

French striker Razak also featured, scoring twice, and Alex boss Gudjon Thordarson said: “I thought he took his goals very well. He is way off being fit but he is worth another look at.”

Pook will begin a pre-arranged trial at Cheltenham Town this week, but Thordarson has admitted he is keen to take another look at the midfielder.

Looks like 3 god signings, they were all freebies but never the less DW has made I feel a wise move.
Lets face it he does know his way round the lower divisions.
I like how he sold the club etc.
Now comes the time for the other 2 or 3 players where he will need to spend a bit.
I mentioned Huddersfield the other day, yes they have spent a few quid this season so far but they do get reasonable gates and if they are in the top 4 amounts spent will not be problem.
Whereas us have spent nothing, get eeling DW will shock us all quite soon with a few signongs. Gate wisw we will do ok. look we struggled last year and gates for our division were reasonable.
So all we need now is to have faith in DW and AF and Board

I think 90% of the Town fans have the required faith. With the start of the new season still a month away I also think things are moving in the right direction. Coxy`s departure is now imminent and Danny must be well aware of the loss of striking power that goes with him. Whether he is able to get a replacement who blows our socks off remains to be seen but I dont think we shall have to wait long for the news we are all waiting for. COME ON YOU REDS !

Some people seem to expect a "name" to be signed ! We had evidence that Coxy was our man before we eventually got his signature and if Danny knows and can get who he wants we have no reason to worry i.m.o.

i agree. its not always best to sign a 'name' player because they dont have the hunger of an up and coming youngster who wants to further their career.

A "blow yer socks off" signing or 2 would be brilliant! However, being realistic I'd be more than happy if we managed to sign players with good solid experience and proven ability. If we could also add a couple of raw talented younger players with potential, so much the better.

Regarding O'Brien, I'm a bit worried about what position he'll play in the team. If he plays up front as a replacement for Cox he could find himself under a lot of pressure. Will he be able to handle it? Cox is gonna be a hard act to follow... for anyone!

I hope that Michael Pook gets a contract at Crewe Alexandra or Cheltenham Town, he certainly deserves it.
I think in the final analysis he didn't quite make it at the County Ground, but only just !
A change of club might just put his career back on course - I hope so !

Apparently he's been spending too much time watching The Hills on MTV. Good luck to him though, I think he'll have a good career in League Two

Blow your socks off signings now let me see

Jamie Cureton - Failure
Tony Thorpe - Failure
Joey Beauchamp - Failure
Neil Ruddock - Failure (Greedy)

All these and more were unveiled as big name signings see the pattern?

Infact the only decent big name signing we've had were loans

James Milner
Michael Carrick
David Thompson
Shay Given

Fair enough point really. Anyone that blows our collective socks off will be too big for their boots here.

As Tite says, proven ability, solid experience and preferable a point to prove are what we need in a player.

Totally agree, although none of the loanees where big names when we signed them, although they where all clearly excellent young players

Not necessary a name signing, but one or two strikers who are proven goal scorers in the lower divisions.
Yes we have had some right awful strikers but good ones as well.

Maybe i'm jumpimg the gun but if Cox is being unveiled in the next 24 hours at west brom, where is his statement to the club, players and fans thanking them for his time at SN1? Ungrateful much!!

I also find it frustrating that the fans have to wait another two and a half weeks to purchase the new strip when the club has clearly taken a shipment already. re: O'Brians photo's on the club website.

Anyway, welcome to our club Alan, good luck and i hope you lose that other little flowery number you're wearing!! ;-]

BC's already gone... to Blackpool.

Akinfenwa would be excellent signing. However, expect to pay quite a few bucks for him AND then of course be pipped at the post by greedy b@st@rds Huddersfield or 'orrible b@st@rds Leeds etc.

Sorry Luke, but one FAIRLY important person mentioned the word 'striker' when talking about O'Brien......and he goes by the name of Danny Wilson.

He was talking about his versatility when he said that he can "play down the left, down the right, or through the middle".

Alan O'Brien is a right footed winger, who can play on the left or the right, but can also play central up front if needed... however, he does stress he is not an out and out striker. He is a pacey winger...

You're a bit stupid arn't you, I mean you don't really make sense.. Just to reiterate, an attacking midfielder is an explosive type of player who can run past defenders - you seem to be struggling with this concept.. An attacking midfielder has these attributes!! Don't be a ****
Oh FFS I thought you'd gone away. I don't normally suffer fools but....

- How the hell do I not make sense?! You haven't explained. This is because you CAN'T.
- Yes you can have pacey midfielders, but if you have someone with god-given pace who loves to fly past defenders, ie O'Brien, WHERE WOULD HIS BEST POSITION BE?! WHERE DO THESE TYPES GENERALLY PLAY?! YOU JUST DON'T GET VAST OPEN SPACES IN CENTRE MID THEREFORE YOU CAN HARDLY EVER UTILISE THIS ASSET. IT WOULD BE A CRIMINAL WASTE OF A PLAYER'S STRENGTHS.
- I REPEAT....afterwards he said "but I'm not a goalscorer".......wh
y oh why oh why oh why would he say that if they were talking about centre midfield?!
- I love the way that you spelt 'aren't' after calling ME stupid!!! Brilliant.

It has been f*cking obvious from the off that they were talking about up front. YOU ARE A F*CKING ONION.

You started with the personal insults - send me a pm on the forum because I want to continue with you.
