Swindon Town boss wants versatility

TOWN boss Danny Wilson insists any new arrivals at the County Ground will be able to fit into a range of positions and systems as he bids to create a squad of quality rather than quantity for the 2009-10 campaign.

With more than 30 professionals on their books last season, Swindon boasted one of the biggest groups of players in League One.

But having released 13 in May, and with more set to follow, Wilson knows he will have to work with smaller numbers this time round.

Midfielders Alan O’Brien and Jonathan Douglas were both in talks last week about a switch to Wiltshire, and the duo are capable of performing in a number of areas across the park – something which the manager believes will be crucial.

“The nice thing about it is that the players we are identifying at the moment are ones who are versatile and can play a number of different systems if we choose to,” said Wilson.

“They will not feel they are uncomfortable in playing a different position than people would expect them to play.

“And that is going to be the essence of how we will go about our business this year. We don't want to be predictable and want to have players in areas where opponents will find it difficult.

“That is how we identify our players.”

Swindon’s players have been back at pre-season training for a week now, and Wilson revealed he has been pleasantly surprised by what he’s witnessed.

“It’s gone very well. We’ve got on board exactly what we wanted,” said the manager.

“We’ve tested them, had a lot of football and have broken them back in fairly gently.

“You don’t like to go overboard in the first week because it’s a long season and you don’t want them to burn out.

“I have to say I’ve not seen one bad trainer – we’ve got a great group of boys and they have really surprised me with the results we’ve had back from the fitness testing. They have come back in great shape.”

Town could complete the capture of former Hibernian winger O’Brien today.

The 24-year-old, released from Easter Road at the end of the season, will train with his prospective new teammates this morning, having arrived in Wiltshire yesterday for talks with Wilson and chairman Andrew Fitton.

Meanwhile, Swindon striker Simon Cox is expected to travel to the Midlands today for a medical ahead of his proposed £2million transfer to West Brom.

The 32-goal striker is understood to have already agreed personal terms, and new Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo gave the move the green light on Thursday.

  • Town legend Don Rogers will team up with manager Danny Wilson and new captain Gordon Greer for an audience in the Legends Lounge at the County Ground on Tuesday, August 4 (7.30pm).

The evening, in aid of the Red Army Fund, will be hosted by another ex-Town player, Phil King with fans having the chance to quiz the trio.

Items including season tickets, away match travel days and a chance to train with the squad will also be up for auction.

The Red Army Fund, founded in 2003 to raise money to augment the club’s budget for new loan and permanent signings has raised more than £33,000 to date and helped to fund the signings of four players, including Greer on loan last season.

Red Army Fund coordinator Paul Wardell said: “It was great to be able to help out with the signing of Gordon last season.

“That is exactly why the fund was set up and we want to be able to help out on more occasions in the future." Entry to the event is free.

All sounds good, however will the players sign, also as we have Simon Cox about to sign for WBA who is the replacement?
I just hope all this work DW is putting into securing the right calibre of player pays off.
We see other teams such as Huddersfield being able to secure semi decent players ,however what has been done at the club so far looks good. So do it Danny

Well all seems to be ticking along nicely at the moment and coaching side looks much better. Obviously now July the 1st has come and gone we should see some movement of players coming into the club.Patience seems to have been forgotten by quite a few posters and they have air'd their views accordingly. It is very frustrating though when other clubs like Huddersfield have been buying everything in sight it seems leaving clubs like ours fighting over the scraps. With many clubs fighting for the better players that are attracting fees, and having bought them up, we seem to be heading now for the free,s and out of contracts so where is all this money from Coxy going? Swindon seem to be portrayed as backed by wealthy businessmen yet there is no evidence of that clout in the transfer market, and here we are in comparison to say Huddersfield just leagues apart. Town don,t have to splash the cash just to look good but we have failed to bring in quite a few players after failing to compete with other clubs. Slightly worried over this Obrien guy who has done nothing at Hibbs but maybe we will have to trust Danny on this one. I was very sad to see big Bazza go and me thinks that will be a big blunder on our part after seeing him sign for Exeter and he will score hatfulls for them IF he stays fit but who knows that outcome and maybe Town knew the worst. Just wish this guy well and hope he does stay fit. Great signings so far in Greer and Lucas, and lets hope a few more like this are on their way. Well done Danny and good luck for this season.

I am slightly concerned that Gordon Greer came in on loan with money from the Red Army Fund. Why could the club not afford to fund his loan themselves?

They probably could afford it, and probably would of funded it themselves.

I expect the offer of financial help was forthcoming from the RAF and the club accepted, wouldn't you?

It`s guesswork on my part but I imagine that when funds build up in The Red Army Fund their committee wish to see it suitably used rather than just accumulating.

If we do sign these players can we have a kaka/ronaldo style introduction. Stage, big screen, fireworks and a sell out crowd. Show the rest of league one we mean business. Or am I being a bit ambitious?

i love that idea. They should do it in the town centre and see if we can attract 50,000 people haha.

o'brien could be announced in the next few hours (hold onto your hats) no fireworks though.

and talks are still continuing with douglas. Town look set to offer him a deal. So lets see if he wants it.

no double signing today, but should expect a flurry (well after waiting this long) of players announced through the week

All the posts are spot on, what concerns me is when the takeover happened we were told how mega rich our new board were.
Nobody can complain as to what has been achieved off the field. However with the sale of Simon Cox surely the club is in a position to actually sign players without going down the loanee and freebie trail.
Nothing against freebies or loan players its just something now needs to be done on the field.
Again AF and board off the field have done us proud, now is the time just maybe to spend some of the Cox transfere money or is it all spoken for?

The club's board have been smart in positioning themselves as people who will not throw many around, thus securing the best deals for the Town. They have invested in players and the profit on Cox will encourage them t continue to do so.

It must be chaos on the transfer market at present so a club in our position need to wait for people further up the food chain to place their bets and make their choices.

We have one of the league's top managers who can be trusted to buy a top player.

The board will be highly motivated to reach the Championship as that status will greatly increase the club's income and financial valuation.

Patience is the key but it all looks very promising.

There's no way that all the money should be spoken for. Fitton has already said that some of the money from sale of Coxy will be made available to DW for signings. Also the wage bill has been drastically cut with us off-loading 14 players.

We should be in a very good position to compete with other clubs for signing players. That's why I was particularly disappointed that we failed to sign Robinson. However, I'm still confident that DW will make some quality signings soon... hopefully!
