Swindon Town: Put through their paces

TOWN’S pre-season training stepped up another notch over the past 48 hours with extensive fitness testing at the University of Gloucester.

Danny Wilson’s first team squad pushed themselves to the limit in the university’s sports science department, undergoing a range of assessments.

The main examination was the VO2 max tests, which saw each player running on the treadmill at a gradually increasing rate, while a team of specialists led by Kate Cady, measured their ventilation and oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration of the inhaled and exhaled air.

The test analyses how efficiently the oxygen in your body is used and, for some, it was a new experience.

“In all my career I’ve never had to do it before, but it’s quite interesting,” said midfielder Craig Easton.

“It’s brilliant that we can get the use of these facilities so we might as well use them. It’s only going to benefit us.

“The way football is going, more and more teams are using this type of thing.

“I haven’t used it myself but I’ve always wondered what it is all about, and it’s good to see what it is like.

“If it benefits us two per cent or five per cent then we will take it because it will help you in some way.

“Everybody’s looking fit so it’s a good start for all the boys coming back. That bodes well for the start of the season.”

That extra 2-5% can be the difference between a 2-1 win or a 2-2 draw with the opposition scoring in the last minute. as happened far too often last season.

I like Craig Easton, I think he has alot to offer and I think this season is gonna be a big one for him. I remember when he joined us, many many Orient fans as well as Martin Ling were gutted that he left.

I remeber when I was staioned at 41 Commando RM at Bicliegh near plymouth.
Argyle used to use the commando training course. After a week there they were fit
ALL THIS NEW STUFF SOUNDS GREAT AND i GUESS WILL BENEFIT THE PLAYERS FITNESS.
Also during season they should be tested weekly as to fitness, maybe they are at present.
Anyhow good luck to them all this season
