Watkin predicts cap on wages

TOWN chief executive Nick Watkins believes League One could be heading towards a wage cap, as the economic downturn grips football clubs across the country.

Football League rules currently state that League Two clubs’ wage structure must not exceed 60 per cent of their turnover but, as yet, there are no such restrictions above the basement division.

However Watkins insists that, at a time when Kaka was reportedly offered £500,000 a week wages as part of a failed £108million transfer deal with Manchester City, he can envisage the authorities limiting spending in the lower leagues sooner rather than later.

“There is a huge gulf between the Premier League and everyone else, and to be even talking about paying someone half-a-million pounds a week to play football seems extraordinary,” admitted Watkins.

“There will always be a Manchester City who go out and break the transfer records and pay structures, but further down into Leagues One and Two I think you might see clubs starting to take a cold, hard look at what they are paying players and what their cost infrastructure is.

“You’ve got half-a-million pounds a week being offered to one player - well that amount a year could more than double the size of the squad we have.

“I would hope that common sense will prevail and we will see a levelling out, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we begin to see a sort of wage capping coming in to League One and even the Championship, just to try and control some of the expenditure. Because I’m not certain how football clubs can continue in this current climate.

“It’s a difficult situation because when you look at League One there’s a Leeds and a Leicester who have got far greater salary bills than we’ve got.

“How you can impose a wage cap on League One when there’s such a mixture of clubs in it? You would have a fairly tolerant bandwidth of salaries that are payable.

“But I can imagine that at some stage in the not-too-distant future, then the Football League may start to put some limits in place. I can certainly see it being discussed.”

With an influx of superstars in the top flight, more and more homegrown talent is being pushed down the football ladder, but Watkins believes lower league clubs such as Swindon can take advantage.

“I can see a situation where there is a trickle-down effect,” he said. “It could impact down into the lower end of the Championship, League One and League Two.

“There will be some players who just want to play professional football and who will realise that perhaps the gravy train is slowly coming to a halt.”

...And this is why he didn't sign for Dover...
ANDY HESSENTHALER has told doverathletic.com he will not be signing striker Hamdi Razak.

Hess could not agree personal terms with the talented big Frenchman.

The Whites player-boss said: "I loved the kid. He had talent and we were going to give an unproven player an opportunity in England.

"But sadly he wasn't realistic with the type of money he wanted. He was coming here for the money and that's not the type of player I want to sign at Dover Athletic. So we've washed our hands of that one and we move on."

Again more doom and gloom. We as fans appreciate what AF+board have done off the field.
Now is the time to make some money available to DW to ensure first survival in this division.
All we appear to get is ifs buts and maybes.
Before the hit squad winge at me over the years (since 61) i had season ticket, now I live out here but do hate what is happening to our club.
In one hand AF saved us, for what?????
we are nearly at the end of the transfere deadline and nothing appears to be coming in, trialists+ who knows you guys spend your hard earned cash supporting our club, I do fear something aint right.I hate being negative but it took ages to get a real manager now getting players is the problem.
Can the town not attract them??? or will AF not lay out cash for even loanees??
we hear so much speculation on TV and press can AF or DW come clean tell us bad or good news

So it this why we cant get any new players in,As NW and CO say they think there might be a wage cap for league1 clubs.I HAVE A THOUGHT.Spend some money now (just to keep use up),then give DW the right backing in the summer then we might not have to worry about a wage cap in league1(HAS THERE 3 YEAR PLAN CHANGED,OR ISIT BANG ON TRACK).Me be thinking are board are trying to make excuses on why they dont spend any money one the team..
If you dont have the money to spend on the club then just come out with it.The fans would rather no the truth...TO BYE OR NOT TO BYE THAT IS THE QUESTION..?

I'm getting fed up with this....we were promised much better.
Do Messrs Wray and Arbib believe that Fitton and Watkins are doing a good job?
It is pointless having such a well run club off the field whilst dishing up such a poor product on the field.
Yes, they saved us from almost certain extinction, but a semi-pro club formed from the ashes would almost have as much appeal as the club in its present form.
Wouldn't it be ironic, if our so called saviours, led STFC out of league football and into the conference, would they continue to invest or would they close the club and walk away?
Perhaps Messrs Wray and Arbib need to explain to Mr Fitton that we need to spend a little bit to compete in a professional league, and if he's not prepared to do so, then perhaps it is time for him to return to running an amateur club.
With regards to Mr Watkins comments, in my opinion he needs to start bringing money into this club and not keep wishing for salary caps to do his job for him, although I do concede that this is probably a good way forward for all clubs at our level.

spot on 1850. i think they should get a performance related contracts.ie if they dont perform well they dont get there full pay.(that should change a couple of players attitude)
How meny STFC players in the past 18mounths have we seen player on the pitch without care in the world.

Why are people saying Fitton needs to spend the money?

How do we know that he hasn't gone and put a bid of £250,000 in for someone and had it rejected?

Chairmans shouldn't go out and buy the players they want, that just **** off managers - we've seen that happen enough times, eg at Newcastle.

Fitton can only spend the money when DW wants it spent. If he doesn't want to buy a player, then Fitton doesn't have to.

I think bringing wage caps into League 1 and the Championship and the Premiership is a great idea. That will stop all these over paid players thinking they are worth millions and millions of pounds. Also thinking they should be on 100k per week. Just think if alot of these foreign consorteums pulled out of these top clubs no other investor could actually afford to take on these stupid salaries that they have agreed to pay the players. I hope it happens to be fair because the game is getting stupid! Also a wage cap gives the opportunity for other clubs like Swindon to complete when signing new players.ie if all these players in league 1 and 2 were on the same salary then its just comes down to choice over club. Or you could be aloud to spend over a certain amount over your allocated budget on 1 good player per club. Theres also loads of ifs and buts when signing players. Alot of people on this sight just think , oh yeah lets buy Kaka and Ronaldo they would be good signings. Firstly these players wouldnt even join Swindon if they were the last club on earth and secondly we couldnt afford their wages anyway. Even if we are after players from the lower divisions, this doesnt mean they would definately sign for Swindon just because weve put in an offer. Swindon have probably approached alot of players but at the end of the day, if the player doesnt want to join your club, what can you do about it. Thats definately got nothing to do with the board or manager, thats the players/agents choice! Alot of people have to get into the real world which is not many clubs of Swindons size in league 1 or 2 spend big money on new players nowadays. Even look at Southampton who are on the brink of admistration because of the huge wage bill they previously took on in order to attempt to get Premiership football. Another club Watford are also suffering. Both of these clubs now have to play alot of youth team players in the side just to survive! That football. You either spend a fortune on players and if it works for a few seasons your laughing or you spend a fortune of players and you get relegated and are still paying out big money on wages or you just keep a tight budget and at the end of the day , just be thankful you have got a football club to support in this day and age!

How fitting that my security word is rich-take. Some of these greedy players should be pi55 take!!!
