Wilson upbeat after step in the right direction

DANNY Wilson believes hard work during Swindon’s enforced winter break is already paying dividends as his new side begin to show evidence that they are heading “in the right direction.”

The 49-year-old has only sat in the County Ground dugout twice during his two-and-a-half-week reign, due to Town’s early exit from the FA Cup and a frozen pitch causing a postponement at the weekend.

But Wilson saw enough differences between December’s home defeat to Brighton and Tuesday night’s draw against Stockport to suggest his new side can escape from the clutches of a League One relegation dog fight.

“It’s going to be a slow process, but from the players’ point of view they have been very receptive to what we want,” revealed the manager.

“They want to better themselves as well and want to get onto a decent run - hopefully this is the start of it and they will take confidence from it.

“We caused more problems to the opposition than we did against Brighton, who sat in and made it difficult for us to play.

“Against Brighton we didn’t really have that bit of energy or directive-ness to go and cause problems, but today (Tuesday) we did.

“I thought there were lots of aspects of our game which were very good, like the support play and laying little balls in behind the defenders, which caused them problems.

“Performance-wise it was a step in the right direction, and we got a point so it is something to build on.”

Swindon’s main failing this season has been their inability to keep a clean sheet, with only one shut-out recorded so far, and Wilson knows just how important it is to tighten things up at the back.

“Clean sheets are always top of my list, without a doubt,” he said.

“We are hardy characters us managers and that’s what we go for straight away - anything else is a little bit of a bonus.

“We’ve got to stop conceding goals - that’s the main priority.

“Today (Tuesday) we only conceded one, but it’s cost us two points maybe.

“Having said that, I think it’s a good point. If you look at the table we’ve moved up two places, so it’s progress.”

so far so good.
However where are these new faces? we are inti mid Jan and as normal Swindon is all if´s and maybes
Last week signings were shelved due to bad weather and to sign would have been waste of time.
Another week has passed with just a couple of weeks remaining before window closes.
The team may have improved(that would not have been difficult) as they were on a down spiral.
So AF & C0 give DW the green light please
Good luck sat at Huddersfield

“Clean sheets are always top of my list, without a doubt,” he said. "I'm
off to Dunelm this afternoon- they have same real bargains!"

Fantastic improvement by the team. Stockport are one of the best sides in the division and would have buried us a month ago. Some great passing and movement and, at last, some pattern to out play. We're going to be fine. It's great to have a real manager again. The increase in confidence was palpable.

Totally agree Reginald, well said.
It was clear that Stockport are a more fluent outfit than us 'at this moment in time' (arf arf), and we just had to do what we could as at times they were pulling us all over the park. But we had plenty of good spells ourselves and were by no means dominated by them.
What I liked is that when we were chasing them, and when we did make the odd mistake, we kept our spirited attitude up and weren't affected at all, whereas I've lost count of the number of games this season where our heads dropped and nobody either on or off the pitch had it in them to do anything about it.
It's just proof, if any were needed, of how important it is to have A PROPER MANAGER that can get into players heads, and make them actually BE professional, rather than just strut around giving it the large one.
Anyway I'm off to feed my rhinoceros some Angel Delight.

Not sure if you`re being sarcastic or not but "fixtures" on the forum will give you the answer.

Would you believe he turned his sizeable snout up at it.....and it was butterscotch (his favourite). He's getting on though, so his appetite is bound to be on the wane.

Oh but I did. But I find it so funny that I wanted to bring it up!
