Swindon Town 1 - Stockport 1

DANNY Wilson picked up his first point as Swindon manager in a 1-1 draw with Stockport, but any joy will have been tempered by another serious-looking injury to Barry Corr.

Jack Smith gave Town the lead midway through the second half when he tucked home a rebound from his own saved penalty, following a foul on Simon Cox.

But just minutes later Corr went down following an innocuous-looking challenge, but was carried off on a stretcher with what appeared to be a shoulder problem.

And Town's evening turned from bad to worse when the superb Anthony Pilkington drilled a low shot past Peter Brezovan to seal a point for the play-off chasing Hatters.

Only an amazing double stop from Stockport keeper Owain Fon Williams gave his side a share of the spoils, and Wilson will be happy with a draw.

After a nervous opening spell from both sides, the first chance of the game fell Town's way on 13 minutes.

Jon-Paul McGovern's low drilled corner wasn't dealt with by the Stockport defence and Jack Smith met the ball on the edge of the area, but his shot was blocked.

A couple of minutes later they went close again when Anthony McNamee's deep cross was headed back across goal by Simon Cox. However, with Craig Easton lurking, Jim McNulty managed to put the ball over his own crossbar for a corner.

Stockport called Peter Brezovan into action in the 17th minute.

Anthony Pilkington, by far the brightest player on the park in the opening exchanges, cut inside Michael Timlin and fired a rising drive which Brezovan had to smartly turn over the bar.

The visitors somehow contrived to miss a glorious chance on 22 minutes as a high hanging free-kick was headed back across goal by Carl Baker, with Brezovan in no-man's land.

But, amazingly, David Mooney could only bundle the ball against the near post and out of play from a yard out, under pressure from a couple of Swindon defenders.

As the game flowed from end to end, Town were next to attack and Cox forced a fine diving save from Owain Fon Williams, having latched on to Jon-Paul McGovern's inch-perfect through ball.

With eight minutes of the half remaining, Barry Corr fired wildly over from inside the box after a neat turn, before Brezovan made another save at the other end, turning Mooney's close range effort around the post.

And with the final kick off the half, Cox glanced McGovern's free-kick agonisingly wide.

Within minutes of the restart, Dominic Blizzard dragged a shot wide of Brezovan's goal after Pilkington had pulled it back from the by-line, while Patrick Kanyuka sent an acrobatic overhead kick wide from a Town attack.

After 58 minutes Kanyuka again went close when he headed down McGovern's corner at the far post, but Fon Williams was equal to the effort and turned it round the post.

From the resulting corner referee Steven Cook awarded a penalty on the advice of his linesman following a tussle between Cox and Fon Williams.

Jack Smith's weak spot-kick was parried by Fon Williams down low to his right but it fell kindly back to the full-back who made no mistake with the rebound to notch his fourth goal of the season.

Cox's barren run in front of goal continued when, set free by Corr inside the penalty area in the 67th minute, the striker's shot across goal was pushed away to safety by Fon Williams.

Swindon's joy was soon turned to worry however on 70 minutes when Corr went down in a challenge and had to be stretchered off, seemingly having done some damage to his arm or shoulder again.

And Stockport drew level just three minutes later - McNeil's ball through releasing Pilkington and the wide man made no mistake with a low drive into the far corner.

Swindon almost snatched it in the 85th minute when Kanyuka connected with McGovern's free-kick, but saw his downward header cleared off the line.

And only an outstanding double save prevented Town from taking all three points.

As Cox wriggled clear from two markers on the by-line he pulled the ball back for substitute Blair Sturrock.

The striker's close range effort was superbly stopped by Fon Williams, before the keeper sprung to his feet to somehow keep out McGovern's follow up.

Stockport are the best team I've seen this season. Their passing was superb. Pilkington especially was a different class.

Well done lads we played some quality football at times. Unbelievable double save from Fon Williams at the end.

A decent point for sure, but for me personally its overshadowed by corr's injury. So gutted for the fella. I was hoping he could put his injury problems behind him and start afresh, it must be so frustrating :( feel for you barry, i hope a speedy recovery is on the cards but i fear not...

I feel Corr needs to quit football now rather than risk permanent injury when he's older.

Vast improvement over the past games and we played very well and up against the best side I have seen down here this season. We played with hunger and tried to pass the ball more. Some good performances especially Brezovan but best player on the pitch was there goalkeeper Williams absolutely outstanding. Very encouraging and shame about Corr as he had played very well but made of glass unfortunately and cannot fall over without doing damage. Still over-run in the middle of the park and don't feel JP amd Macca should play together as it puts too much pressure on the two in the middle, but still a marked improvement so well done to Danny , many positives to take from the game.

Mr Fitton can you buy us their #7 please, thank you!

Enjoyed that, glad to see skysports having a chuckle at Rockin Robin tripping up a 3year old....what a meany.

Getting better....

Shame for Corr, had played very well, won so many headers.

My security word- sale-wash.

That's the best I've seen us play in the whole time when Malpas was here. Ifil and brev showing signs of themselves again- ifil even seemed to have his passing boots on tonight!

I like Corr but got a feeling that's going to be the end for him- especially playing in Swindon. Hope for his sake I'm wrong!
Cox needs a goal to kick start him again
A very good point against a very good team. Onwards and upwards! Come on Danny boy keep it going!

I think B CORR'S contract runs out at the end of the season,if so just pay him off,he has proven he cant stay fit so whats the point in keeping him around.i THINK HE HAS ONLY PLAYED,5 GAMES IN 24 there's just no point in keeping him,and i think he is on a half decent wage.(free up some money for a new player)We need a full team for this dogfight we are in.SORRY

I know Where you're comin from there, & if it were any other player i'd probably agree. From a business perspective it doesn't make sense to keep him on, but I'm still hoping wilson has seen enough promise to take a chance. I love to watch corr play, its heart breaking to see him plagued by injury like this.

I couldn`t get there tonight and will go as far as admitting I`ve never seen Barry play. I think he`s good enough but clearly has a serious weakness. As a front runner he has to mix it with robust defenders and he just cant give as good as he gets without sustaining injuries. If players have to be shipped out to make room for others to come in he has to go asap. I FEEL SORRY for the lad but STFC is a business and not a charity.

Now there's something we do agree on! Wilson looks and sounds like a manager should, and no mention of a monkey on our back, a banana skin, or swallows makin a summer! Evidence of his influence clearly visible on the pitch too. Promising, good passing football at times but the defence always beaten still. Cue craddock... An experienced head to keep the back four strong, just what we need. Is that actually happening, or just the adver jumping the gun?

Cox was worse player ive seen in time

the number 7 pilkington i think his name was is way above league 1 standard

But it looks good for the future for swindon way we played and what hes been in charge 19 days now ?

Two bad note from the game.
players still arguing with each other cox and smith then cox didnt even go to celebrate

second barry corr i think thats the end of his swindon career So hope im wrong he was playing really well tonight

Timlin well what can i say

easton was alright aswell

When I saw Timlin (our captain!) limp on second half I wondered what the hell he was doing? He must have known he was not up to it? Then mistake after mistake still he did not come off! Eventually their number 7 Pilkington who was excellent all game made us pay...hang your head in shame skipper..what an example to show?
DW we need a left back as soon as possible, please do not put a right footer there, I would rather see the kid Kennedy back than what we had tonight.
Much better tonight against a good team. Need to keep the fight and press higher up the field in latter part of game?
Sorry to see Barry Corr carried off again. Must be a serious doubt about his long term future in the game, sadly?

Pleasing and Promising performance tonight, i think attacking wise we were 100x better than we were against Brighton and a little bit better defensivly, still some errors but i think Ifil and Kanyuka have only played about 7/8 times together, maybe enough time to form a decent CB partnership or maybe not but an old experienced head is what we need right now. Brezovan's best game of season in my opinion, seemed to talk to the defence a lot more and made some great saves and his kicking straight has improved(just shows what confidence can do)

On the other subject tonight: Barry Corr-on his day what a player but from sitting in the Town End everytime he goes down, even before tonight, the group im sat with seem to worry as the lads so Fragile, fingers crossed he makes a speedy recovery and hopeful its not the end but could be. Good Luck Baz!

im sorry..i might upset a few on here, but brez has to get a lot of the blame for there goal, when he took a free kick 45 yards from his goal,he just stood there watching play for about 10 seconds instead or retreating back to his goal.
when we got caught in possesion he had to quickly back track and imo well out of postion when there striker shot. organisation seems a shambles when defending set plays also.
imo i feel we need a least 1 new keeper, because the two we have are not doing the biz at the minute.

The result whilst not the best we could hope for is at least a lot better than a loss. I'm sure things will keep on improving as we take on the style of the new manager.
I just can't help looking at the Barry Corr photo above and feel the pain and fear that shows in his eyes. So very sad for him and Swindon, but who knows he may not be too badly hurt and may return soon.
I'm now looking forward to the results again so things are on the up!
I'm going to predict a 2-1 town win on saturday. Cox to score both our goals!!

Spot on p*ssed off ! As for the goal it was a great strike that went between Brez's legs .... not ideal but hardly indicates that he was out of position !

i think he lacks in these areas, would still put him in before smith though..which doesnt say much about our number 2 does it?

Much better and an enjoyable game of footie , it was only a matter of time before Pilkinton turned Timlin and scored why we did'nt change that sooner is my only comment , Brez seemed to command the area better and his kicking was better , all in all a good evening against a very good side (one of the best we have seen out the CG this season).Evidently Stockport are now in financial difficulties so expect Pilkinton and a few other of the youngsters they had on display to be plundered real soon . Oh and great job by the ground staff after 4 inches of frost in the pitch the surface looked great . Well done everybody the glass is half full .

Timlin was outplayed. We cannot expect A. Macnamee to tackle back. Timlin was out of position. His passing was atrocious. Cox missed a couple of sitters in the first half especially that one where their goalie or defender's pass went astray and left him only the goalie to beat.

Interesting comments. I thought we were particularly poor in all areas except in goal where I thought Brezovan made a couple of good saves. One reflex one in front of the TE was 10/10.

Midfield weren't tight enough, Kanyuka and Timlin awful. Cox selfish and uninspiring.

Long way to go. We should have been 2-0 down by half-time.

I agree Football writer.

I can't remember a game where both sides were giving the ball away so easily and not completing basic passing. We were awful, but stockport were too.

The pitch probably caused some of the problems, but even so the majority of the chances came about from fortutitous rebounds off someone elses arse or knee. Granted there were a few exceptions, and Cox showed class in his determination at the end to set up the Sturrock/McGovern miss.

Oh well, 1 point is better than no points. I liked Pinkerton too - easily the best outfield player on the pitch.

YES WE HAVE ARE DODGY 1ST OR 2ND HALFS BUT WE ALWAYS TRY! AND NEVER GIVE UP! WE HAVE GOT A OUTSTANDING SIDE AND I THINK SWINDON JST NEED THE SUPPORT WHAT THEY HAD LST SEASON!..

I BET 5 OUT OF 7 OF U PEOPLE DONT EVAN GO AND WATCH SWINDON! JST SIT AT HOME BEHIND THE COMPUTER CRITISISING THEM, WHEN U CNT BE BOTHERED TO GET OFF UR BUM AND SUPPORT THEM.
