Watkins predicts a bright future

ONE year on from the Town takeover lead by Andrew Fitton's consortium, chief executive Nick Watkins tells Anthony Marshall about the progress made at the County Ground – and the work still to be done

"It has been an interesting journey – there’s no question of that.

"We found some things in the woodwork that we hadn’t anticipated and we have had to clear them up.

"And some of those issues have been quite painful, financially, to address.

"But we’ve addressed them and we now need to move on.

"As I’ve always said, the component parts are the same as in any business.

"You’ve got a finance department, sales and marketing department, personnel department, operations department and administration department.

"The product goes on display on a Saturday afternoon between 3pm and 4.45pm and, unlike manufacturing, when you can control the output of the machine, sometimes you cannot control what happens on a Saturday afternoon. And that can impact quite severely.

"But it’s a great privilege and a pleasure to be involved in sport, and many people would be very envious.

"We’ve done huge amount of work off the pitch and a lot of work on it as well.

"On the playing side I think we got off to a false start.

"I don’t want to put too much pressure on the new manager, but I think we’re all very optimistic about how he will do.

"He’s very professional about the way he’s addressing situation.

"No stone will be left unturned, and hopefully he will get the club back into a winning way and out of this relegation zone.

"We are hopeful that he can get us up the table, build for this season and really establish the platform for next year.

"I love this job. I spend endless hours here. I hate Saturday afternoons now and my stomach is in a knot.

"I feel totally elated if we win and hugely depressed if we lose. But I love it, and the people I have around me are fantastic.

"I feel hugely privileged that there are so many good people here who I work with and who I enjoy working with. I think they feel comfortable that there is now leadership and direction and that we all know what we have to do, and I think we will build from here. This is a long-term game.

"Yes there is the playing side, and yes we have to get up into the play-offs – I can’t tell you how financially disappointing it is to be out of the FA Cup and out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy,as they were two very important targets for us.

"We are paying the price for that – no question about it.

"But there’s all the playing and all the off the field activity, and that is all building for a bright future."

After years of smoking mirrors and mis management what a difference!!! I think Nick Watkins is the best assett the club has had for decades.
Lets all get behind the team and move upwards on onwards

I hope this confidence from the board feeds through to the players and then just maybe, just maybe through to some of those 'oh so fickle fans' we have...

It's so ironic that now the club have both professionalism and stability behind the scenes, the product on the pitch is so poor. Can we ever have both I wonder?

I dont know what people are moaning for, we have a financialy sound club, good off the field management for the first time in ages, A very good experienced manager, who will be successful at the club and we all had the option to purchase a season ticket at £10 a game which is value for money !!!

I for one am very happy that DW is here and we should now climb the table, but there is a lot of work to do for DW with the playing staff and IMO some of the coaching staff, keeper coach and AW need to go !!

Sign Brez, get a defender and a midfielder, maybe a striker, get rid of casal, kanyuka, pook,a
ljofree,morrison,stu
rrock,corr,smith,nal
is, maybe a couple more

"We’ve done huge amount of work off the pitch and a lot of work on it as well".... I'm sorry but I have to disagree with the last part of that statement from Nick Watkins. The work on the pitch has been pretty woeful, the appointment of Malpas and the signing of very poor players in the summer has got us in the situation we are now in, without a doubt.
Thankfully the appointment of DW together with a commitment to strengthen the squad is a big step in the right direction.

How refreshing to hear Nick Watkins with so many positives. With all the past regimes especially that last lot Best Holdings just being a bunch of crooks on the take.
Signs are very good off the pitch and surely with Danny Wilson at the helm it can only be a matter of time before the situation improves on the pitch. I think Danny's battle at the moment is with the weather. Great to hear from Nick though and he sounds a great guy very passionate about the club.

I am looking forward to the future this time last year we nearly folded. Although I am concerned about our league postion, I think we have to the right man in to sort the mess left behind by MM. I get fed up with those doom and gloom merchants who post on here. I look at it this way, we have 23 games to play, half a season, and 69 points to play for from now on. for first half of the season we had the worst manager in our history in charge, the second half of the season we have one of brightest managers in football league. so instead of the moaners on here moaning all time look ahead and your see we have a bight future under AF&CO and DW.

Absolutely correct. I think if we had Alex Ferguson in charge people will still find something to moan at. This is one of the most positive periods in the Town's history and with mistakes made and admitted we should be thankfull that we have people running the club which we could only have dreamt about 13 month's ago. We are all passionate about our club but for the life of me I just do not understand why people chose to still NEG out on this forum. This club are in probably the best state for years with good people running the club and we are in a much better state than many clubs out there so why can't people forget about complaining and moaning and get behind the club. agreed. christ knows what state we'd be in right now if NW, AF and co hadnt come in and straightened us out before the economic down turn. even if someone else had funded us i think with the way things are going we'd have still gone under.

and with Wilson now in charge i feel we have a manager who can attract players at this level and command a bit of respect.

It´s so refrshing to get updates, as fans we are all pleased that AF&C0 saved our club.
Whats been done off the field has been amazing, only downfall was the appointment of MM this has now ben rectified and we have what I would call "A REAL BOSS"
He will be able to put a semi decent squad together, as fans however we need to be patient with his approach and AF & the Board.
(Rome was not built in a day)
I as a fan widh both AF& C0 +DW all the best for the future

I'd like to thank Watkins, Fitton and all new new management team for their efforts over the past year.

Off the pitch things have been great. Season ticket pricing better, Club shop is better, legends lounge is better, exec areas are better, communication has been better, realistic talk of redeveloping the CG.

On the pitch things havnt been great as we all know. Fitton admitted his mistake with Malpas, and most of our on field trouble have been caused by MM. I think we all need to move on from that now as if you look at the bigger piture of the club as a whole it is clear that the fitton regime have done more good than bad.

I'm optimistic about Wilsons reign, he would have been my 1st choice for the job, but out of the REALISTIC candidates he has a resonable CV and a sound knowledge of our league. I dont think we will go down with him at the helm, or even come close. I do have doubts about his ability to get us promoted, but one step at a time I suppose. Things needed sorting out after MM and I think DW is a decent choice to do that.

Its easy as supporters to be very short -termist about the club and football in general. But if we are ever to have a sustained inprovment from the level we are at now, then the work being done off the pitch needed to be done to make the club stable and reduce some of the horredous losses the club has made in the last decade.

I just hope that the second year of the new regime will bring as big an improvment on the pitch as we have seen off it this year. Although no doubt some people on here would still whinge

well we arent in the relgation zone. so we arent going down yet.

we werent promised a new stadium, it was mentioned as an option in the future or development of the CG.

bad mistakes?
1. MM, fitton has learned from this.
2. ? ummm, took too long to get a manager but we ended up with a good one.
3. ? you fill me in on that one.

credit crunch, but we have a financial secure club now and no debt. perhaps you overlooked that one.

yeah i blame the board for this weather too.

aljofre is captain when fit but then Wilson hasnt had time to get anyone else in yet so who knows.

you reckon doomed but alot of people are optimistic. give it a go.

Ah, now it all becomes clear - you always slate Morrison on here, to the puzzlement of everyone else, but now it transpires that you actually mean Marshall!

What a fool you are. Try and learn the player's name before you slag him off. Here's a clue for you: Sean Morrison is the tall white lad, Mark Marshall is small and black.

For the record, Marshall is young, raw, and in his first season after making the step up from non-league football. What were you expecting from him, realistically? Give the lad a chance.

Very good post.

Also, to all those that like to berate the moaners, your moaning is now getting tedious. Whilst i agree there is a lot of moaning, there is also some very good posts who's opinions we may not share but nevertheless they are constructive points of view.

I for one am very happy that DW is here and we should now climb the table, but there is a lot of work to do for DW with the playing staff and IMO some of the coaching staff, keeper coach and AW need to go !! Sign Brez, get a defender and a midfielder, maybe a striker, get rid of casal, kanyuka, pook,a ljofree, morrison, stu rrock, corr, smith, nal is, maybe a couple more
"Sign Brez, get a defender and a midfielder, maybe a striker, get rid of casal, kanyuka, pook,a ljofree, morrison, stu rrock, corr, smith, nal is, maybe a couple more" MORRISON ? ? get rid of him ? Why for goodness sake ?
because he is rubbish !!! I have seen nothing apart from the odd step over, he doesn't chase back and isn't in the game enough, yes he is young, but if we want to be in the championship he wont be good enough !!
Morrison isn`t a stepover type. Do you mean Macca ? I doubt that you go to the CG !
Umpcah - dont talk tripe, people like you do my head in, because I dont rate morrison, I dont go to the CG - yeah right mate grow up !! Morrison is wonderful I must agree with Umpcah the god of football knowledge !!! As for Macca, I do rate him, bit in and out of games but most wingers are !!! Morrison has potential but I havent seen it and dont think he is good enough !!
ITYL : Please read the posting from STFCLondon to find out who is the tripe merchant on here ! Please dont do my head in like this !
