Wilson set to cull Town squad?

UP to four Town players could be off-loaded during the January transfer window as new boss Danny Wilson looks for an immediate turnaround in fortunes at the County Ground.

As of yesterday morning, clubs are allowed to trade again and have until the beginning of February to finalise their squads for the remainder of the season.

With Swindon sat just a place and a point outside the League One relegation zone, Wilson has already spoken of his desire to freshen up his playing staff sooner rather than later with new faces.

And the Advertiser understands any incomings will have to be balanced out by departures as the County Ground chiefs try to keep the wage bill under control.

The futures of midfielder Lilian Nalis and defender Yinka Casal are under threat, while Blair Sturrock and Michael Pook may also find themselves back on the fringes of the first team squad despite having been involved recently.

After being appointed manager on Boxing Day, Wilson told the Advertiser last week that the timespan he has to judge his players is shorter than normal and that he would have to make some quick decisions.

He admitted: “If we were sat here at the start of June and had the whole of pre-season to look at players then it’s a bit easier.

“But when you are coming in at this stage of the season the timespan becomes a lot shorter, and I think the impact has to be made straight away.

“If we think we need to change the team around then we’ll do it straight away.

“We don’t really have the time to look at somebody’s progress over two or three months. We have to hit the ground running.”

Left-back Casal only arrived in the summer from Dutch side Cambuur and played four of the first five games this campaign.

But since then he has started just once - away at Southend in October - and now has Michael Timlin and Callum Kennedy ahead of him in the pecking order.

When veteran midfielder Nalis joined Town in July following his release from Plymouth Argyle it looked like an inspired signing as the playmaker came with an impressive CV.

But - by his own admission - he has struggled for form and fitness and, with Swindon having an abundance of central midfielders, he could well be moved on in order to free up some space.

All very well these players being offloaded to balance the books, but aren't these guys under contract and unless someone else wants them are we not still liable for their wages.

well there are so many clauses in thses contracts you might find they can off load cost free.....i dunno, but no club wants to be liable for anything these days......what do you think???

Sturrock, Pook and Nalis are i believe under contract until the end of this season so we could let them go then...but unless clubs come in for these 3 in January we are liable for their wages until June. Casal probably signed a 2 or 3 year contract so he will have another year or 2 to go after this season. If signing new players or getting players in on loan depends on DW offloading some of our current squad first then the chances of freshening up the squad looks unlikely...if so we will probably have a nerve wracking season trying to avoid relegation! We have been trying to offload Blair Sturrock now for months with no success, and couldnt find any takers for Michael Pook during the summer so cant see clubs queuing up for these players now. And with Casal not playing for months cant see any takers there either.

Looks as if AF & C0 will need to stump up remainder of contracts(if players are to be off loades)
As would feel nobody will want what we have.
Just hope he can bring in a few new faces.
Get feeling he know´s what he is doing.
As to AW /DB and that deradfull goalie coach maybe they should go as get feeling DW has own backroom in mind

but something tells me he won't.

i think he will bring in a new assistant though.

and maybe a mid fielder and striker

More important to bring in a decent central defender as that is were the biggest weakness is.

tbh. i think if jerel is given confidence then he will be very vocal. danny will sort him out.

and what with brez now securing no.1 shirt he will grow very confident too. back to the way he was on his first ten starts for town

Cull them like the little piggies they are. Hang them from their hoofs and make crackling from their skin..... or try and sell them on? All quiet about Cox..... certainly need another striker but I think Midfield additions would also benifit the back 4

Only 4 to be sold, I could think of many more who are worthy to be on their way! Like West Ham any can go if there's interest, including Cox who goes down quicker than Ronaldo. Could do with a couple of decent midfielders for a start, couple of forwards, defenders, goalkeeper....

I just hope DW can utilise Macnamee to better effect. Lots of skill good crossing from the left but nobody in the box to take advantage. We have just been ploughing down the middle or down the right, with only minimal use made of an under used asset.

Get rid of the animated Byrne before he gets the club in trouble with th FA. Casal give him a go looked good and then dropped.MM(not the manager) i like his records but how many minutes as he played. Pook at least tries, Nalis too much time spent doing his hair. I'd get rid of at least 6/7 give Morrisson,Allen& Kennedy a chance and get some decent backroom staff, but keep Mackey
