He said...

“The midweek win over Stoke caught my eye and it probably caught everyone’s eye.

“It came about in the last few days and once I heard of their interest I was keen to come down and get some regular football.”

"Well, well, well - it's been a busy old day at the County Ground. Three in, two out - as predicted early this morning - but what is equally encouraging is Town holding onto their prized assets, barring last-minute drama.

"There can't be a single Swindon fan complaining about the Robins' business today. It's been a real statement of intent, once again, and the squad looks very strong now."

Let's hear again from Darren Ward . He trained with the Swindon team for the first time today and here's what he has to say about Paolo Di Canio's regime...

“It is intense at times but if you want to succeed and be at the top what’s what you have to do.

“I’ve built up a bit of a reputation with my fitness, nutrition and stretching and pilates. I love it, I love training. I'm a very lucky person to be in this situation, why would I not?

“You’re a long time retired in football and I want to stay in the game for as long as I can."

8:39pm

More reaction from John Bostock now, and this time his answer when asked how hard it will be for him to force his way into the first team at Swindon.

“The standard’s improved and we’re in a better league so it’s going to be difficult but I still believe I can contribute to the team.

“So however the manager sees fit, I just want to do my part."

8:12pm

Here's a few words from new loan signing John Bostock who spoke to Adver chief sports writer Sam Morshead earlier today.

This was his take on what his chances would have been had he stayed at Spurs after tonight's transfer deadline...

“I spoke to him (Andre Villas-Boas, Tottenham manager), he’s a fantastic manager, but I guess the strength of the squad is phenomenal.

"It’s a world class squad so for me, at the age of 20, it’s going to be hard to get games.

“They haven’t won a game yet so obviously he’s going to have to produce wins and I don’t think he’s going to take risks in playing me so the club made it clear it’s best if I can go and get games and play and there’s no better club for me to come to."

The most recent signings of Bessone, Coke, Bostock, Rooney & Ward I my opinion show a great sign of intent from both Paolo and the Board...

It's a shame about the whole Caddis situation but if his heart is not in it at SN1 then this is the best thing for both parties.

My only concern is still no experienced cover in the GK department.

Looks like Di Canio will be relying on the loan market should something happen to Wes the Wall.

Jay Bothroyd has joined Sheffield Wednesday from QPR.

6:51pm

Here's some more from Adver chief sports writer Sam Morshead's interview with Darren Ward earlier today.

Sam asked Town's new signing whether he though the Swindon set-up was of a Championship level.

Here is what he had to say...

“I think yes it is, without a doubt, but there’s always room for improvement.

“If you ever sit down and think ‘I’ve done it’ you can get ready for some bad times because you’ve always got to keep yourself stimulated and ready for improvment.

"At Millwall there was a really good set of lads and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there but I just needed to move on - for my reasons and to improve my career and keep on reaching my targets, which include a team set-up and the right surroundings which hopefully so far Swindon has."

6:02pm

Right then, time for another quick rundown of everything that's happened at Swindon Town today.

It's been a busy one.

After the signings of Darren Ward and John Bostock on loan last night, Paolo Di Canio added to his Swindon squad with the capture of Federico Bessone on a six-month contract earlier this morning.

Bessone was followed later in the day by Adam Rooney , with the Birmingham City striker joining on a season-long loan deal.
As part of that piece of business, Paul Caddis went to St Andrew's, also on a season-long loan.

Giles Coke has arrived at SN1 and will remain on loan with the Robins until January, but his move was only made possible by the loan exit of Oliver Risser to Stevenage.

5:37pm

Darren Ward is obviously on the same wavelength as Swindon Town manager Paolo Di Canio.

The centre-back spoke to Adver chief sports writer Sam Morshead earlier today about his training ethics and his first impressions of the Robins boss.

This is what Ward had to say...

“I enjoyed what I heard from the manager, I really did.

"If I feel something’s right, I’ll stick by it, so it’s not me being stubborn it’s about me looking at things and working things out.

“I do as I’m told no question under a management, no question whatsoever but I know I can bring a lot to the table to improve.

“I did it at Millwall, against you guys a long time ago. Back then we knew we were going to do it, we were well prepared and what we did then is very similar to what I see at Swindon now. It’s nice to see it and the views he has, he’s very methodical and it’s nice to see that because that’s how I am."

TRANSFER UPDATE

Nigel De Jong has joined AC Milan from Manchester City.

Stoke confirm a fee has been agreed with Liverpool for Charlie Adam.

11:03am

Last week, Adver chief sports writer Sam Morshead spoke to Paolo Di Canio about the transfer window.

The Town boss was asked whether he felt the concept of a deadline at the end of August was fair for all clubs.

Here is what he had to say...

"For everybody it is the same if you extended it to September or October but you don't see the real knowledge or ability of a manager who can choose early what they want.

"If you make all mistakes now, in September, October or November if you have a club that gives you £10million it's easy.

"At the end of August is enough time because we have played enough football to recover from mistakes.

"We can't wait for everybody. So I think the end of August is the right time.

"It is the right time to see the ability of the managers and the way they work."

A reminder now of what Paolo Di Canio wants from those players he brings in before the transfer deadline.

Speaking to the local media yesterday, he said...

“The players that join us, we have followed them already for a minimum of two or three weeks or one month to properly check their physical condition, their attitude, speaking with people who have worked with them in the past so it’s easy.

“Obviously, even if they have knowledge and quality I have to tell them exactly what is going on with us in terms of discipline, training regimes and the way we play.

“This is normal for me, it will take no longer because the players who will join us are intelligent.”

Today we expect Federico Bessone to join Swindon on loan until January with the view to a permanent move.

We broke the news the Argentinian was talking to Town on Wednesday, after he was pictured outside the County Ground ahead of talks with his agent.

He could be joined by Birmingham striker Adam Rooney , who reported to be part of the deal that could take Paul Caddis to Birmingham by the end of the day.

STAT ATTACK

Let's have a quick look at new signings John Bostock and Darren Ward in numbers.

***************

Bostock has played 38 times for a variety of clubs up and down the Football League, scoring four times.

BACK FOR GOOD?: John Bostock

The 20-year-old commanded a £700,000 fee when he moved from Crystal Palace to Spurs in July 2008.

***************

Ward , 33, has played 481 times for six different clubs - most of whom have been London-based. In fact, the defender has only previously ventured out of the capital once - for an 18-month spell with Wolves.

Sky Sports understands Swindon Town have made a move to land Nicky Ajose from Peterborough United.

Ajose has only just joined Crawley Town on-loan, but he has impressed at the Broadfield Stadium.

He scored the winning goal as Crawley dumped Bolton Wanderers out the League Cup last week, but now his time at the Red Devils could be coming to a quick end.

Town boss Paolo di Canio is looking to bolster his squad on deadline day with a number of new arrivals and one of those could be Ajose.

In further news PDC popped down to Portsmouth last week to scout a couple of their players, he arrived at the ticket office and handed over £20 saying "Two Please"...The clerk replied "Thank you Mr Di Canio....would you like the goalkeeper and forward or any two of the others?"

BBC Oxford are reporting that during a recent match at the local three sided library a couple of supporters were seen climbing over the wall..a furious Chris Wilder saw them and grabbed them by the scruff of the neck before dragging them back inside the ground insisting "You WILL watch until the end"!!!!!!

Shame to see Caddis leave in this way but we'll cope without him as we have in the last few games. Joe Devera is a real unsung hero for me. He is better defensively than PC and is not so easily beaten in the air. He's played his part in what has been a rock-solid defence so far. Joe will rarely get man of the match playing at right back but his performances this year have been excellent and that's why I'm not overly disappointed about Caddis leaving. Adam Rooney could do very well at league 1 level and we might get the better out of this particular swap deal.

For those stayaways, now is the time to show our backers, our chairman, our players and our wonderful manager, your support. Get down the County Ground and watch the Barca of League 1!

I have a feeling that League 1 will now be quaking in its boots at the strength of our squad. I have no doubt that Paolo will chop and change the team when appropriate but as past results suggest, he will be proved right and get the results.

This is virtually Paolo's team now with only Flint, Ferry & Ritchie left from WIlson's days. That says a lot!!

SAP is Coke a proven Championship player? Would like to know how considering he has never played a game at that level!!!!! . Also we WERE short at CB as Devera is now our RB - leaving us only 3 i all fit - we are NOT short in CM with between 4 or 6 there now
Have a look at this link from Shef Wed forum - I would say he comes highly rated. We have 4 quality cb's Flint, Macca, Troy and Ward.

What a fantastic day and what a contrast to the previous regimes where we struggled to bring in players.

As we've heard recently, players have been queueing up to join the revolution, well now they are here!

On paper we look like a Championship side playing in League 1, for now.....

Just ran into a couple of Villa players at Birmingham new street. Told them it wasn't too late to join me on the train to Swindon and give themselves a decent crack at a trophy this year. Even offered to pay their fares. They politely declined. Their loss!

Stop all this excitement, Town! I'll have to lie down in a dark room! Still recovering from the guys achieving the impossible at Stoke, now we have even more top signings coming in.

Swindon fans are used to a poor diet of disappointment, envy and other team's leftovers. How will we cope with a rich diet of belief, excitement and euphoria??

Those reviews (like most Players) is quite mixed - however does seem to sound a solid L1 player
.
Guess it is 4 in CM and 4 forwards with Bostock floating between the 2
.
With 46 league games and hopefully another 10+ cup games we could need them all

Just seen the Bostock interview - they ask him where he plays and he said attacking midfield - but the gaffer knows best - love it!

Now just seen Coke's appearances this year were in the cup - so he has in fact not ever played at Championship level
.
Lots of L1 games though which is more important as we are L1 at present

A quick thanks to Caddis and Risser. Without question the new additions are quality. Paolo now has a real challenge to make his selections each week. However the new boys on the OS site interviews seem to be fully aware of what is expected. Great excitement but PNE will still be a big challenge on Sunday. If it was had to predict the starting line up before it will be almost impossible now. Different formations as well. All too much for this long standing STFC supporter. I have spent most time worrying about who was going to leave during transfer windows. Thank you to the Board.

This has been a week to remember - what a line-up we've got...now it's down to Paolo to keep them all fighting for a place in the team.

I can't quite stop pinching myself at the moment....is it all real?

Nassingtonred - forget Poxford...think you may have the result for Sunday!

It's called mockery LR...after yesterday in which you ignored the facts and argued something totally separate on Ward I felt inclined to to a bit of mockery....there is a sense of humour in every accountant I assure you, go on!!!...you know you can find it somewhere

Still suffering from a knock is the only status I've heard...could be back on the bench on Sunday but don't think they ever enlightened us on exactly what it was.

ANYONE FROM THE ADVER - Please can you sort out the Predictions League thread please - it won't accept any comments.

Sap, I took a look at their prediction site and your equivalent Lilywhite he calls himself told their supporters Swindon fans think they are going to"dyke" them and we think we are Barcelona. Their response to a man was to predict 90% for them to win, 10% to draw. None of them fancy our chances at Deepdale. I would think we might have something to say about that.

Can't remember Macari, Ardilles or even Hoddle having this level of cash available for new players. They achieved. Let's hope DiCanio follows their example.

You sound like bitter Macari himself!
.
Think he is really jealous that PdC is going to go down as our greatest manager and wants to try and belittle it with comments about how different it was for him
.
As other managers have said you may have money - but you still have to manage the squad and drive them on
.
Sir Alex has had shed loads of cash - how much did RVP, Rooney, Nani, Valencia, Carrick, Evra, Vidic, Ferdinand, Raffeal and De Gou cost to put together? £200m £250m £300m?
.
The same can be said for Machini, Wenger, the Special One et al
.
Even Guardiola spent millions upon millions - and wasted more than PdC did with Ibrahimivic flopping there and costing Barca over £60m!!!!!
.
In terms of money spent PdC has not spent that much - Wilson spent more!!!
.
Wages too - we may have been "big" last year (relative to L2) but this year the leaked budget is again in line with Wilson's reign - so PdC is not being ridiculously backed as some think

r Mancini and Jose has spent to Paolo!their trying to win the Champions League and their own League Titles!Paolo trying to win Div1,compare our budget to the other contenders in our league, don't talk rubbish!!!!!!!!!
