SWINDON TOWN: Ritch fee?
6:00am Wednesday 18th July 2012 in News By Sam Morshead
In Demand? Matt Ritchie
SWINDON Town have turned down a £900,000 bid from an unnamed club for a senior member of Paolo Di Canio’s squad, the Robins boss has revealed.
The offer, which the Advertiser understands was lodged for winger Matt Ritchie during the club’s tour of Italy last week, was immediately rebuffed by Di Canio - who is keen to keep all the key members of last year’s League Two-winning side with Town ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.
The Italian did not specify the names of the individual or interested club in question but Ritchie has been the subject of significant interest from elsewhere over the last eight months, with Bournemouth seeing three bids for his services rejected by the Robins between November and January, and the former Portsmouth man remains one of Swindon’s hottest properties.
“Nine-hundred-thousand is not a crazy offer in my opinion for a League One side, especially for Swindon that has no problem financially,” said Di Canio.
“It’s not the latest news, not one hour ago, but a few days ago or maybe a week ago - but I denied it straight away and said no.
“Even if they offered me two League One players and some money I would say no because for me this player is crucial.
“I think it’s better to have this player than two League One players plus some money. Maybe it would be a larger squad but not the quality like the player I’ve got.
Di Canio stressed on Tuesday that only “crazy offers” would tempt him to part with his prized assets, and he did not consider the approach to be of that level.
“Crazy no, in my opinion it’s not crazy because the value that I’ve given to my players are much higher than the club’s,” he said.
“Perhaps I’m crazy because I think some of my players cost in this moment maybe £3million - someone maybe would pay £100,000. It’s not for us because we don’t have a problem, we keep the best players.
“If they come with £2.5million maybe I can think yes because I already have some targets that give us the opportunity to be a top, top, top League One team on paper.”

Should Ritchie do the same - then the above stance would change
.
Yes the day of accepting a bag of balls have gone and we will hold out for a decent fee now
.
But player power still rules and rules all the way to the top - Modic for example is forcing a move!

You've always got to worry speculation might unsettle him. But Bournemouth seems unlikely, Southampton might be different! Anyway let's hope he takes the long view and realises he will learn from Paolo.

Lets face it what chairman would in his right mind pay 600k for Matt Tubbs only Mitchell with foreign money and if Tubbs is worth 600k Ritchie would be worth 2 million based on that.

2 points, sort of linked -
1) He is only under contract to the end of this season, would be good to follow suit with Caddis and extend that.
2) His goal will certainly be to play in Championship, so like last year if we are not in contention for playoffs or auto promotion, would an offer be more tempting? £900k in Jan with 6 months left on contract...

We are clearly geared up for a challenge so why would Ritchie want to move to another L1 side?
.
All the board need to do is ask the following:
.
Is the team Championship or above
.
Is the initial fee £2m or above
.
Is there a sell-on for 20% or above
.
If one or more is no then the response is no
.
If all are yes then talk to Matt if he is interested or not
.
For me same applies to Caddis, Ferry and Flint - only the initial fees would be £1.5m, £1m and £1m
.
The real one we need to hold on to is Wes as GKs are specialist and decent ones are rare
.
Butland is not as good as Wes but valued at £6m!
.
So Wes should have a fee of £5m attached to him and then more add ons such as International caps as well as a sell on
.
With Ritchie we could strengthen the team with the money even if an individual coming in is not as good as there are 10 outfield spots
.
Wes however - will only weaken us if he goes and there is no one available to us at his level

Good work in rebuffing that offer. I guess it wouldn't be Bournemouth this time as it was made clear before (several times) we valued him at £2m, and now he's League 2's player of the year it's £2.5-3m. In money terms that means he is Swindon's best ever player. 2 points, sort of linked - 1) He is only under contract to the end of this season, would be good to follow suit with Caddis and extend that. 2) His goal will certainly be to play in Championship, so like last year if we are not in contention for playoffs or auto promotion, would an offer be more tempting? £900k in Jan with 6 months left on contract...

I hope that Ritchie has more than just 1 year left on his contract - no doubt LR can confirm. If not and he won't extend at Christmas then I would sell him regardless. No matter how some fans are getting carried away with the finances, it would be naive to risk losing a sum close to £1m.

£1m for Flint , are you serious ? he's not worth half of that . He may be O/K but he's certainly nothing special ... YET . Big question about him is he able to progress further as a player or has he now found his level?.

Agree with all the people saying its Bournemouth with the offer as they are constantly on about getting Ritchie now all of a sudden they have Russian oil money but they will never be a big club they get small crowds, hardly any away following and i feel with their chairman Mitchell who is proud of the fact 6 of his previous building companies have gone bust which is why his current company name is seven builders i feel his relationship with the Russian will be a short term relationship plus he has only loaned the money to the club. Mitchell is a very firey character and as dodgy as hell but for Ritchie himself Bournemouth would definetly be a step back in career terms.

I like PDC's style in making it clear that we don't need to sell, but I think the suggestion that any of our players is worth £2m-£3m is pretty fanciful. Having said that, I would not want to lose Foderingham, even for that sort of money, as his immediate value to us is enormous. Also his potential market value may be even higher than £3m.
.
The top of League 1 or the lower reaches of the Championship are probably the limit for most of the players remaining from last season, so - Foderingham apart - I believe we should think very carefully before rejecting offers in excess of £1m for any of our players.

Call it rumours etc yet the scource that again mentioned it the other week was gospel.
For those who slagged me off wake up clubs will be interested in Mat Ritchie there bound to be.Question is if the right offer comes in lets say the 2.5 million thats been branded about, I feel the club would find it hard to turn down.

Key players will have their contracts renewed before the season starts and given built in promotion wage rises and bonuses they'll sign the contracts.
.
Ritchie, like Ferry, has been consistent in stating he is settled and doesn't want to move and he was clear about that on the two occasions I was lucky enough to talk to them both.
.
All footballers want to be part of a success story and play regular football - this is one big success story in the writing and the likes of Ritchie and Ferry are both key components.
.
Carry on Paolo! Bigger crowds, better squad, let chapter two begin!

Ritchie i believe can also see the potential again this season with Paolo at the helm and i think he wants to be part of it and why would any player really want to go to another L1 team as we have nothing to fear from anyone in this league and our potential is high again for more success. The board have backed Paolo and will keep going with him as long as we are succeeding and i believe this season will be another good one for us.

My guess is it will be next summer. A few here will reject that, but what do any of us know ? Having watched Portsmouth implode I thing Ritchie will be very careful as to where he will go next. The wonderful world of uncertainty that is soccer and its collapsing clubs will certainly focus his attention.
The decider in his choice will be his relationship with diCanio and to whether he feels his career needs more than what this club can offer, diCanio included.
The choice is his to make, with influence of course from his agent, I hope he chooses the right option.

I have always thought a small amount of standing should be re-introduced - for example at the CG the bottom section of the DR stand should be terracing with the seats in the area above
.
If this was repicated in all 4 stands it would give a realy good atmosphere with standing next to the pitch - but also only a small manageable number
