Wray confirms interest in Town players

SWINDON Town have received interest in several members of their current playing staff, interim chairman Jeremy Wray has confirmed.

The Robins have transfer listed a number of first-team professionals this summer as manager Paolo Di Canio looks to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion from League One.

Wray did not name the players in question or the clubs involved, but he reiterated that many of the Swindon squad are currently in the shop window.

He said: “We’ve had interest in a number of players. We’ve made it known that there are other players potentially, who are at the club under contract, that may be available if we get offers in for them or if they think it’s right for them to move on.

“That has inevitably led to enquiries for certainly three or four players so far and we’re just waiting and we’ll see what we do with them but things will happen.

“Common sense says if seven or eight are coming in then we’re not going to have too large a squad so a number will be going out.”

Wray emphasised that he and Di Canio do not want to have numbers amongst the squad just for the sake of it, stressing that everyone on Town’s books come the start of next season will be expected to play a significant role over the course of the campaign.

“I think you’re looking at a core of a team from last season that is in place, but it is a squad game and what you’ve got to make sure is that the people you bring in that are part of that squad are not just numbers that sit there and are numbers on the back of a programme or come on once in a while, when you’re 5-0 up,” he said. “They need to be key people who can play a part, so the strength will be in depth to the point where Paolo’s genuinely got 17 or 18 players he feels are of a standard that could get us to the Championship.”

If there are players that have been told already they won't feature in this seasons plans, I don't understand why Jeremy doesn't name the players that are on the transfer list and bring it out in the open. We can all speculate who they might be, but wouldn't be surprised if there are one or two unexpected departures.

No point in naming them in case they don't go/sell, as that would only build a barrier between them and those that remain. I did say before that I felt nobody was safe and some surprise dealings may be done this summer. More interestingly, this time next year even more contracts will will at an end. I believe, Risser, Devera, De Vita, Cibbo and some of the guys from pre Paolo days. Never a dull moment.

Best display from England last night that I have seen in a long time, well done to Roy for installing some Paolo type passion into the team, Walcot supreme.(ex-Town of course)

Would suggest that the interest is in players who aren't transfer listed. If he names them then they'll feel like they're not wanted and lower moral. I think some fans need to be prepared to lose a couple of favourites.

Ferry was in this position last year. After a disappointing pre-season he was told he was free to go - only for him to force himself into the untouchable group

Also if deals don't come off we don't want named players in the squad as that would be strange for all involved

Also naming them may hinder deals going on?

If that was a good England performance and the best for a while we really are dire!

We couldn't keep the ball, pass the ball or more importantly defend!
.
There is no way we can Chelsea Spain in the quarters with holes and marking like that at the back
.
We will never change while the same system and players are used
.
We need to do what the Hermans did - start again
.
After the Tournement we should decide on a system and implement it at all levels so all know how to play it
.
We should kick out all over 30s bar Cole and bring in the youth
.
They can then interchange with the U21 depending on form, opposition etc as the bulk of the squad should be from that age group
.
Ala Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshire, Cleverley, Henderson, Caulker etc

I agree, I don't often disagree with wiz but that was not a good England performance yesterday and we were very lucky to win! As LR said we can't pass the ball around and keep possession, I hope we improve but I have no expectations of us progressing very far in the tournament.

Thought Ashley Cole had a poor game last night by his standards, think he was carrying a knock, he was out-paced by their winger and that doesn't happen very often. Ashley Young was also poor, no penetration down the left at all, good substitution taking Milner off for Walcott changed the game. Thought Glen Johnston had one of his best games for England and was our best defender.

What was most annoying for me was how many times we lost out to 50/50 tackles, The Swedes were tougher and more physical and won the ball more than we did and the two fouls concede that lead to their goals were very poor by international standards.

3 great goals and I think we just edged it , if we get past Ukraine we have to hope France slip up if we want to avoid Spain who should top their league, having said that it might be better for us to get them early on rather than in the final. Looking forward to tuesday, but we will need to defend better than we have to date if we are to go any further.

England win last night was a good result. Live for the moment.

No, dont think we will go far much further. I said before the comp started that we would probably limp through the group, finish 2nd and be given a masterclass in football by the Spanish.

If, somehow, we miss Spain in the quarters, we may, just may beat the Itallians, but not Croatia.

If we do get to the semi's (no chance) and we avoided Spain in the Qtrs then it would be Germany or Spain in the last 4.

Englands route to the final - easy peasy. Bring it on.

The thing that struck me about the England performance, was that the players did not look like a team to me. they don't seem to have a natural understanding of the way their team mates play - so different to what we see at the county ground! i'm not blaming them, it's just an observation. Spain play like a good club team - they seem to have an inherent understanding of each others movement and strengths. I guess that comes from the fact that they mostly play for the same club! Germany also play like a team, but who'd expect any less from them! Of course anyone can beat anyone at this tournament, but I don't see us going very far without riding our luck.

I was referring to the fight back and spirit, not the overall standard of play, my fault I didn't make that clear. At least Hodgson's interview on BBC is less full of the normal corporate BS we have had from some of our past managers.

BTW, I agree about the old guard, the likes of Terry have had their day, and never quite aspired to where we would like them to be, time for change. This time I think we have a manager who can do that and generally change things for the better.

Depends how you define good.

I thought it was a good performance. In that the team galvanised to get something from some woeful defending.

So I'd say good, yes. Convincing, absolutely not!!!

Hodgson has instilled a team ethic and passion into the side. I think that was the deciding factor. Unfortunately he can't instil skills that are not there. If we are ever going to be regarded as one of the top football nations, we have to start producing players who are more comfortable on the ball and don't resort to the big hoof so often. Many games at the County Ground last season were better than last night's.

The core of our squad wont be sold, regards to England sweden made us look ok in 1st half then they changed their tactics 2nd half which they had too with them staring at ellimination, they pushed kallstrom further up and gerrard and parker couldnt get close first 15-20 mins, they bullied us off the ball! Cole kept getting caught out of position all game his worst game for a long while! luckily Theo come to our rescue with a cracking goal even tho i think it was more in hope than precision judging by the look on his face! Andy Carroll had a great 1st half but looked abit out of sorts second! Wellbeck quiet most of the game but came up trumps (sign of a good striker) great finish tho! i dont know why people slate terry we could do with a few more warriors like him! poor marking for their goals none terrys fault! Cole was marking mellburg for their second goal! were make nxt round but have no chance of beating Spain we cant keep the ball but hodgson knows how to keep things tight and were probably lose by the odd goal!

And come on swindon sign some players coz as soon as i open my eyes in the morning i have to check the website for any potential new signings then im wide awake and have to read the same repeated stuff over n over again! sure there be more positive news nxt wk! we all know williams is coming but hes only an average lg 1 player but under Di Canio he could blossom! and with regards to favourites leaving i strongly feel that will be alan connell, did well last season but constantly getting taken off! heres hoping for some better news nxt wk!!!! OVER N OUT !!!!!!!!!

Good post Steve, I think we will have to wait until July 1st to read about new signings as contracts run up to end of June. Paolo probably has 3 or 4 lined up ready to sign including Williams and possibly Navarro amongst them and maybe Marlon Pack from Cheltenham? I agree Connell will probably go which is a shame as most of us like him but obviously not rated by Paolo.

Ashley Young has been terrible in both games and should be dropped.

Against France he was supposed to be dropping off and helping make a three in midfield but he hardly ever did that and France had nearly all of the midfield possession.

Against Sweden, he gave the ball away time and time again.

No need for him now that Rooney is back and wide players like Milner, Walcott and the Ox should be ahead of him.

And on top of that, he's a cheating, diving ****.

Laz I think the reason for England's poor showing in major championships in recent years is obvious, i.e. The Premier League, and its now unrestricted influx of foreign players which has meant that home grown talent fails to develop because the easy option is to bring in overseas star names.

I'd be happy to go back to the two only rule.

I agree that we used our "get out of Jail free" card last night and lady luck favoured Angleterre... it won't last!

We would probably struggle against Ireland at the moment

as for England/sweden England were fortunate to get the win,the swedes battled hard but England for a change had a slice of luck.Not a great show but A1 for effort the worked for the result.

Wizard,you could be right about Mat Ritchie as although Pdc has a decent budget they might just cash in on Rithchie.
Still it's only a thought as i do think a few are going to depart,all I hope is Pdc gets it right with players he signs this season

LR, if Poyet is still there of course, LOL, many have him down as fave for Spurs, but as you correctly point out, its all rumour.

So many looking forward to this next season many can't wait, but in time honoured fashion, wait is exactly what we will all have to do.

If we are lucky, we may get some news towards the end of this next week, but I think cards are being held very close to the chest about who, if and when.

LR, have you seen the DVD yet ? I thought it was spot on and well worth the money.

Different a few years ago where we had to sell to simply survive. We are more financially stable now.
Whilst we therefore don't have a policy of sell to survive every player has a price.
The club is better run from top the bottom and has ambition.
The dark days of Diamond Mike and the battles to get rid of him and his cronies are well and truly behind us thankfully.

Paper talk hopefully was it the Sunday Sport. Can't see this one coming off with Benson having one of his best seasons for many a year and sure Paolo has more than made it clear he was one of his role model players for all to try and copy, a true professional. All I have heard so far is there is a big signing on the way which could cause a mass exodus of socks from fans feet.

Ritchie OK for League 1 but Championship?
Billy, I think M.R may possibly be good enough for the Championship, but he will have to change the style of his game. First off he will not have to be so selfish, and secondly he will have to improve his distribution. I think L2 was below his standard, this next season will be very telling as he will have to change tactically. It will be interesting to see how he, Caddis and Ferry cope going up a tier, I think they will be ok. Whether J.Smith, Cox and a few others survive however is another question.
