SWINDON TOWN: McCormick spotted at the County Ground

LUKE McCormick arrived at Swindon Town as a free man for the first time on Wednesday to meet with the club ahead of his proposed pre-season training spell with the Robins.

The goalkeeper, who was released from Leyhill Open Prison last week after serving half his seven-year and four-month sentence for causing death by dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol in 2008, attended the meeting with club officials alongside an advisor - spending around two hours inside the County Ground.

A national newspaper yesterday claimed that McCormick is “set to resume his playing career with League One Swindon Town” but, while he will join in with training, the former Plymouth stopper is not expected to sign a professional deal with the club.

The Advertiser was not able to contact Swindon’s interim chairman Jeremy Wray yesterday for comment on the meeting, but Wray has previously stated that he does not expect to see McCormick earn a contract in Wiltshire.

Speaking on May 24, he said: “It’s one step at a time, it’s a long, long way from saying that he’s anywhere near going back to restarting a career as a professional footballer.

“This is someone who has served his time and is now looking to reintegrate and be rehabilitated into society and he goes back into the profession he was in before.

“We can help by offering to help him train and rebuild his life and hopefully help him give something back.”

Meanwhile, Swindon have been handed a home draw against Brighton in the first round of next season’s Capital One Cup.

The clash with Gus Poyet’s Seagulls in the newly rebranded League Cup will take place on August 14, with a 7.45pm kick-off, and the match will be screened live on Sky Sports.
