SWINDON TOWN: 'Paolo deserves all the credit'

Paolo Di Canio Paolo Di Canio

INTERIM chairman Jeremy Wray has hailed manager Paolo Di Canio’s contribution towards transforming the entire mood of Swindon Town in the space of 12 months.

Just over a year to the day after Town were relegated from League One following defeat away at Sheffield Wednesday, the Italian and his team were celebrating after winning the League Two title in front of their own fans following a 5-0 hammering of Port Vale.

The appointment of Di Canio last May came at a time when morale at the club was at rock bottom, and Wray believes the former West Ham striker must take the bulk of the credit for a rapid change of fortunes.

“We must celebrate this moment because compared with 12 months ago the change in mood is amazing,” he said.

“I don’t think I have ever felt as low as I did following our last home game of the season last season, and we still had to go up to Tranmere for the last game which was tough.

“But everything is completely different now and we go to Bradford for our last game and there is no place I would rather be.

“Paolo has to take the credit for that absolutely, we said at the outset that he can not necessarily expect to have players with the talent of Lionel Messi, although some of our goals against Port Vale were outstanding, but what you can expect is to have players who will give their all.

“Paolo expects and will not accept anything less, and that has been the difference.

“We have had a team who are fit and play for each other and that has seen us achieve so much.”

At the time of his appointment there were questions raised over whether or not Di Canio was suited to working in English football’s basement division, but Wray is proud of the way he has proved his doubters wrong.

“A lot of work has gone in to this season and you do not get to the top and become champions by accident, and it has happened because Paolo and his staff have put in a huge amount of effort, and I don’t think people realise quite how much,” he said.

“They have all been dedicated and I think that is why we have managed to achieve all of this.

“Everyone at the club can be satisfied with what we have done, the players have played brilliantly and the managers have managed well.

“What I can say is that I got one decision right, so I can be pleased with that. If that is my contribution to the season then I am thrilled.

“I think this manager writes his own script, and maybe he contrived to lose two games in a row so that he could celebrate in front of his own fans.”

  • PAOLO Di Canio and Alan McCormack have been nominated for the League Two manager and player of the month awards for April.

Di Canio masterminded Town to five wins from their seven games in April, keeping clean sheets in all five, but lost back-to-back games against Aldershot and Gillingham.

Promotion was sealed at Priestfield despite defeat, while Town won the League Two title with a 5-0 victory at home to Port Vale on Saturday.

During that time defender McCormack has been in superb form at the centre of the Swindon defence, and scored Town’s only goal at Gillingham.

The Irishman was not involved in Town’s 1-0 win over Plymouth on May 14, but returned to the side the following week to help seal promotion and the title.

Also nominated for the manager of the month award are Shrewsbury’s Graham Turner and Southend’s Paul Sturrock, while Nicky Wroe of Shrewsbury and controversial Southend defender Bilel Mohsni have been nominated for the player of the month award.

The winners will be announced on Friday.

well said Mr Wray. Now, how about you get rid off the "interim"
and take some deserved credit for the confidence you had in PDC and the unwavering support, without it we wouldn't be where we are today. after 50 years of following town, this may not be the best season but it's in the top one.

Agree with everything you say about Wray, but you're not seriously suggesting that this season is better than 68/69?!

Yes a nice touch from the chairman. It was a gamble by him and the Board to sign a Name.Pdc as a player was super but as he had no basic manegerial experience and knew little of the basement UK Leauges qquite a few of us doubted.Yes we did,and how wrong were we, I think there will be a few leaving within the next month or so plus incomings. As to back to back promotions I see it if the Board still continue to support him and the gates could improve a bit I see no reason why nxt season can also be a success.
If Pdc does leave he would indeed be a hard act to follow

After the first ten league games I think we could all see the tremendous effort that was going in to this team and that effort reaped massive dividends as the season went on. You can only get out what you put in, and here the input was massive, not only from the team but from the board. Both Paolo and Wray are new to their jobs, but by working together and supporting each other we have had the best season for years. Next season will be harder, but a lot of the building blocks are already in place, bring it on !

PDC may stay, he may go, who knows..he does what he wants. Lets just enjoy the moment and worry about it if it happens.

"controversial Southend defender Bilel Mohsni" - he scores a lot of goals from the back.

I for one never doubted that Paolo Di Canio was going to be a good signing. Risky, Controvercial, yes. But still a good signing all the same. Paolo has always tried to be a winner and does the best he can.

We've had a tendancy to appoint 1st time managers with a reasonable level of success: Macari, Ardiles, McMahon, Hoddle, even Dennis Wise (though not around lone enough).

I also stated back in January that once the Town reached the top of the league, we would not be removed.

Feb 21 - May 5. WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE.

Well done JW. If you think your contribution is only small, then think again.

No sure how old Townie is but it`s difficult to make comparisons. As I witnessed the celebrations on Saturday I remembered previous ones ! I remember the , for me , unprecedented scenes when Bert Head`s babes got us out of the old third division where Swindon had languished for so many decades. In those days promotion was for other clubs ! We pinched ourselves to make sure we weren`t dreaming ! Di Canio is getting Swindon back to where they should be ! COME ON YOU REDS !

Agree with umpcah, comparisons are difficult. I have supported the Town during all the highs-all great as we know there will be years of lows- for despite being a great club with great support - we are not wealthy. Where Paulo scores over the other triumphs is the distance travelled in such a short space of time- perhaps matched only by Ossie Ardiles who turned a long ball team into a superb footballing team with essentally the same players.

Signor Di Canio è il supervisore.

And I agree with Chairman Wray about the Technical Staff – Picareta, Donatelli, Doardo, Panarese – unsung heroes take a bow.

I'm sure that you meant this as tongue in cheek though, just hope the F.A have got their sense of humour hat on today.

Seriously Jeremy well done on this fantastic appoinment. I never doubted it for one moment, hence my bulging wallet today. When I heard in February last year we had approached "Some Italian bloke" I couldn't think who it might be then a couple of weeks later the name came out and I couldn't believe it. Well we ALL believe now don't we.

Never in my 45 years supporting this great club of ours can i remember a manager connecting with the supporters in such a positve way imo only Lou Macari comes close . Full marks to Mr Wray for having the balls to appoint a " rookie " and stand by him when things wasn't going to plan .
The moment that will stick in my mind on Saturday was singing " Stand up for the Champions " and even the Arkells Stand joined in pure magic , wish they would join in more and give the CG a much better atmosphere at every home match .
Can't wait for next season and no matter what happens PDC will be a STFC legend in my eyes

There were 1 or 2 occasions when we in the Arkells actually instigated some singing and the T/E then joined in. Was a very proud day.

I have to say that I feel very emotional when I think back over this season.
Having supported the Town since 1990 when I saw my 1st home game, I absolutely love the club and being a part of a wonderful group of fans.
We have certainly seen our fair share of bad seasons at the County Ground. But as I get older I am learning how important it is to savour the good times and live in the moment.
As a team, and as a group of supporters this year I really feel we have done that. What an absolute pleasure it has been to ride this seasons' rollercoaster and finally revel in the glory of being Champions.
Paolo is an inspirational and wonderfully passionate guy who deserves all the plaudits.
The players have done us proud and I now hope and pray next season is as wonderful a journey as this season.
One thing is for sure though. For me now, thus far in my life, I will remember this season more than any other, because there have been so many special moments. Truly truly magical.

Thank you to Paolo, the players, the other fans of STFC and J Wray! 2011-12 has been the best.

I was 8 years old when the '63 promotion was won, so only have vague recollections of the excitement. The great thing about this season is that, for most of it, we have played great football to get us out of this hole of a division. It's been marvellous, but I don't see how it can be on a par with '63 or '69, or say the great Ardiles season of 89/90. That might come when we win another promotion. For excitement, I would put 2011/12 alongside 1985/86. For quality of football, 85/86 doesn't come close.

With everyone of you on how proud we were on Saturday, no dries in my party after the roll call & then singing my head off in the Arkells with my grandson giving me an old fashioned glance haha, but he loved all the goals going in. Even if he did have to stand on the seat to see the celebrations. Hoping to be singing again on Saturday at Bradford, ticket & coach booked.

With regards to reminiscing my first match was at Loftus Rd when Sam Burton was in goal & Maurice Owen was centre half. I was only a nipper & went with the staff from Richards the butchers that used to be at the top of Regent St. Other memories along with all the great Wembley trips are when we beat Liverpool when KK was playing. 28,000 or thereabouts when we beat Millwall to get promotion & when we played Arsenal at The County Ground & The Anglo Italian Cup matches.

Just a chuckle for the younger posters, at half time this guy would walk around the perimeter of the pitch with a tea urn on his back & even if you were half way up the terraces other spectators would pass your money down & the cups of tea back hahaha.
Changing the subject even more, I thought it was great last night when buzzer (Mike Summerbee) nearly had a smile on his face, he was & will always be my boyhood hero.

Remember also during the 50's when four blokes used to walk around the perimeter of the pitch with a blanket at half time. One on each corner and spectators used to throw loose change into this blanket.
Money used to rain down from the very back of the terraces. There were no safety hats or goggles and no one seemed to get hurt.
These were times of extreme hardship post WW2, there were signs up all around the ground saying "Beware of pickpockets" but folk still had money to throw into this blanket. Marvelous times , sigh . lol

Indeed loyal, I remember the blanket guys collecting coins very well, not sure whether it was for charity or club funds. I wonder how that would go down with the revenue now.

Also as a fourteen year old I used to go & help clear snow off of the pitch (still got the picture from the Adver) & got a free ticket as a thank you. Wonder how that would go down now with ‘elf & safety & risk assessment hahaha.

Den, you are still only a youngster and must be banned from being a member of the "ol mafia" i'm afraid to say. Whilst on the subject of being banned is your son still allowed in the Arkells after his attempt at getting em all singing.
Den is an honourable member,a future godfather in the making.
Regarding being better or worst than other seasons, they all had special moments for us,this is different thats all.

i am taking everything into account. The scarves thing, the roll call, the fact we went from 21st to 1st, Paolo's passion, F.A. cup run, JPT, 6-0 against fatty evans, even the pies and burgers are better, well maybe not the burgers. not just how well we did but the season as a whole. from last season's low to this season's high.

Seeing as all the oldies are coming out today, I must add my tuppence worth.

Firstly, I have to admit that I wasn't convinced about Paulo's signing but was prepared to give it time when a few called for his head early on in the season. He proved his point in style.

Second, imo this season doesn't rate as the greatest achievement nor has it produced the most memorable matches, although it had its fair share of crackers and I'll not forget my kids faces after the Wigan game. However, for sheer entertainment value and consistency of application, it takes some beating.

Finally, it has more than re-enforced my view that we have a first rate Board, led by a man who should indeed now stop calling himself 'Interim'.

A cracking achievement by all and I'm gutted I couldn't make Saturday but looking forward to big celebrations at Bradford.

Swap your 45 years for my 36 years and i couldn`t have put it better myself. The sight and sound of the Arkells stand was fantastic

Hah! Yes, I'm just an honorary member, but I think ol' North Stand had me down as Chairman and Chief Kneecapper!
.
Don't think my lad's been banned. There were some strange looks though. And when he'd finished the "Who's gonna win today...?", the bloke in front of me said "Thank God that's over!"

There are a few of us who try to get things going :-)
..but also fully understand some of the perceived lack of vocal support don't knock the Arkells too much folks!? I'm a big mouthed, can't resist it sort of bloke and would love a few more vocals around me..equally we need the right chants / claps to get everyone going.
..
Agree with all though - massive campaign to stop all music in the ground 5-10 mins before kick-off! We tried to get things going by responding to the Town End but couldn't hear a bluddy thing - PLEASE STOP!!
