TOWN boss Danny Wilson insists he is only targeting “quality” summer signings, as he lines up a double midfield swoop for Irishmen Alan O’Brien and Jonathan Douglas.
Irish international winger O’Brien, who was released by Hibernian at the end of the season, will arrive at the County Ground tomorrow for talks with Wilson and chairman Andrew Fitton, before training with his prospective new teammates next week The versatile wide man can play on either flank or through the middle, and Swindon’s manager is confident a deal can be completed imminently as he looks to add some blistering pace to his squad.
“We’re hoping to speak to Alan properly when he arrives down here on Sunday from Scotland,” revealed Wilson.
“Nothing is confirmed yet and he hasn’t signed anything, but we’ve identified him as a player who could be a big help to us.
“He will spend a few days here, we will have a chat with him, and hopefully be able to agree everything. If all goes well it could be done very quickly.
“What he will bring to us is that pace that every team needs. His pace is absolutely terrific and that will cause problems in this division.”
Another player firmly on Wilson’s radar is former Leeds and Blackburn midfielder Douglas.
The 27-year-old Irishman fits the bill for the tough-tackling central midfielder Town are in desperate need of, but the boss believes he will not be alone in chasing the ex-Premier League star.
“He’s a good player and if we can bring him on board it will be a fantastic acquisition,” said Wilson.
“We want to push forward, and if we are going to do that then the calibre of players like Jonathan Douglas is what we are looking at.
“There’s always competition for players of that calibre, but we’ve to do that. I’m not very big but I’m like a Jack Russell - I don’t let go.
“We are trying to assemble a real quality group of players We’re close to a few and I would like to think in the next seven to 10 days we could have two, three, four new additions.
“That might not happen and people might get disappointed and frustrated, but that is what we are aiming for. “And they will be players who we think are of the quality that will help us achieve what we want to achieve this season.”
Meanwhile, Wilson expects Simon Cox’s transfer to West Brom to be completed early next week.
The striker will travel to the Hawthorns for a medical on Monday ahead of his £2million switch, and Swindon’s manager confirmed the Baggies are still the only team in the running to sign him.
Wilson said: “We’ve given permission for Simon to speak to West Brom and he goes up on Monday and Tuesday for talks.
“We’re not trying to force anybody out of the football club, but the opportunity is there for Simon and he wants to play at the highest level.”

Do you not realise how long negotiations with players take? Especially in our case, where we're after real quality signings, it takes time, because DW has to fight off competition from many other clubs. The season doesn't start until 8th August FFS, and you're panicking already. Sit down with a nice cup of coffee in front of the tele, and stop worrying. There's a good boy. Fitton and DW clearly have a long list of targets, and it's only a matter of time until the main targets sign. Just take a chill pill fella.

I remember mixed views on this forum calling for time and patience for Malpas when it was clear (to me at least) he was totally inept and out of his depth. We now have a decent manager but look at the fiasco of getting DW, it tooks weeks when other clubs seem to do deals in days.
I think AF has a game plan and we are inching towards it, the problem is the goal posts (excuse the pun) are shifting faster than we are improving and therefore we are in decline. With the likes of Leeds, Norwich, Southampton and Charlton and other clubs MK Dons and Huddersfield spending in L1 we have to compete with these teams if we are going to reach a Championship standard. I just can't see that happening.
Agree that we if we can imporve fitness that will be a big help. I also agree that DW will improve tactics and the players we have (but not to a Hoddle type level). Regarding Cox yes he had the service etc but we will also lose his all round contribution that created goals for others. Swings and roundabouts...
No matter how you look at it we need at least 5 quality signings in time for pre season so they can get fit and begin to gel as a team. That feels like now... We were promised less squad more quality and at the moment we've less squad and less quality.

Thought I would have a play around with potential starting line up last season vs next season. Lots of assumptions here so I realise this is all playtime. Still - thats what all the above threads LAST YEAR 1. Brezovan 2. Smith 3. Casal 4. Nalis 5. Ifil 6. Aljofree 7. McGovern 8. Timlin 9. Paynter 10. Cox 11. McNamee NEXT YEAR 1. Lucas 2. Amankwaah 3. Kennedy 4. Douglas 5. Morrison 6. Greer 7. O'Brien 8. Timlin 9. Paytner 10. Peacock 11. McNamee This already includes 7 new names without the replacments for sc - so in my view - we are heading for an improved line up already - no doubt things are progressively getting better - not a revolution yet but hey - only 4 names left from day 1 last year if the signings go ahead.

If you think that any player who's contract is allowed to run must be trash, then you really are deluded. OK, you can occasionally pick up a reasonable player on a free, but quality, don't think so, thats why Coxy cost WBA 2 mill. Thats why the players we put in bids for want to play at a higher level, because they are quality, but the free transfers will go anywhere they can, because nobody else wants them. As the weeks drift by, I feel more and more that this is going to be a tough season I'm affraid, unless the club stop faffing around and invest in some QUALITY!!!
There seems to be some air of delusion these days that the more you spend on a player, the better they are. Is Roque Santa Cruz better than Thierry Henry? Judging by how you think, you would say yes.
Douglas would be a quality signing for whoever he signs for, and my fear is that he moves to the Championship and makes us regret even letting him go.
