Swindon Town chase Irish duo O'Brien and Douglas

TOWN boss Danny Wilson insists he is only targeting “quality” summer signings, as he lines up a double midfield swoop for Irishmen Alan O’Brien and Jonathan Douglas.
Irish international winger O’Brien, who was released by Hibernian at the end of the season, will arrive at the County Ground tomorrow for talks with Wilson and chairman Andrew Fitton, before training with his prospective new teammates next week The versatile wide man can play on either flank or through the middle, and Swindon’s manager is confident a deal can be completed imminently as he looks to add some blistering pace to his squad.
“We’re hoping to speak to Alan properly when he arrives down here on Sunday from Scotland,” revealed Wilson.
“Nothing is confirmed yet and he hasn’t signed anything, but we’ve identified him as a player who could be a big help to us.
“He will spend a few days here, we will have a chat with him, and hopefully be able to agree everything. If all goes well it could be done very quickly.
“What he will bring to us is that pace that every team needs. His pace is absolutely terrific and that will cause problems in this division.”
Another player firmly on Wilson’s radar is former Leeds and Blackburn midfielder Douglas.
The 27-year-old Irishman fits the bill for the tough-tackling central midfielder Town are in desperate need of, but the boss believes he will not be alone in chasing the ex-Premier League star.
“He’s a good player and if we can bring him on board it will be a fantastic acquisition,” said Wilson.
“We want to push forward, and if we are going to do that then the calibre of players like Jonathan Douglas is what we are looking at.
“There’s always competition for players of that calibre, but we’ve to do that. I’m not very big but I’m like a Jack Russell - I don’t let go.
“We are trying to assemble a real quality group of players We’re close to a few and I would like to think in the next seven to 10 days we could have two, three, four new additions.
“That might not happen and people might get disappointed and frustrated, but that is what we are aiming for. “And they will be players who we think are of the quality that will help us achieve what we want to achieve this season.”
Meanwhile, Wilson expects Simon Cox’s transfer to West Brom to be completed early next week.
The striker will travel to the Hawthorns for a medical on Monday ahead of his £2million switch, and Swindon’s manager confirmed the Baggies are still the only team in the running to sign him.
Wilson said: “We’ve given permission for Simon to speak to West Brom and he goes up on Monday and Tuesday for talks.
“We’re not trying to force anybody out of the football club, but the opportunity is there for Simon and he wants to play at the highest level.”

WOTS is, that many players in the market that were initially wanting the cash and going to H'field, are now shunning the club, as they have targeted and bought too many players. there squad is over subscribed.

E.g wanting to know whats happening ALL the time. the media bring it to us in some true forms and some sensationalised forms (that is what they do) But now we have all this close contact and information, we don't want it.
its kinda like wanting to know where a family member is and exactly what there upto. I'm sure if 6 years ago i knew what my sister was gettin upto every night, i'm pretty sure i wouldnt want to know.
So yes the media brings us revelations and sometimes dissapoints us with there sensationalist guestimations, but that is our fault for demanding to know more.
I'm sorry to go on, but if it were like the old days, fans would get down to the training ground or to the club, and they'd be able to see for themselves who or who wasnt turning up at the club.
if your not happy with the media then dont read it cos they will still be here when we have all snuffed it.

The trouble is, some people want to know before the club do (I DO) but this just is not possible.

Lets have some paitence, we've already signed more players than even many premierships clubs. Plus we have announced a new Asst manager, new coaches, new sponsors, new kit makers....and even not caved in at the first offer of our best player! And still we demand more! yes cox was a prolific player, and he will sit alongside don rogers and all the other greats that have played for town.
But, remember, 1 player never makes a team, cox needed the supply to score those goals, and also cox has the tendency to miss sitters! Any how, we cant really comment on decline just yet, as we dont even have a comparible team sheet to last season.
one thing we must remember is that towards the end of last season wilson got alot of this curent team playing quite well, all those tough matches, Leicester, peterborough, etc. some say we should have won thiose games. probably 50% of last seasons games we could have won or looked to have won.
i really think this MAX training the guys have done will help them big time. and if they continue using it the will all become evn better athletes (MAX is a respiratory system, where the user can only breath in and out through his/her mouth, over time it teaches you to MAXimise the use of your oxygen in your body. Its a F£$%*in excellent piece of kit.

I remember mixed views on this forum calling for time and patience for Malpas when it was clear (to me at least) he was totally inept and out of his depth. We now have a decent manager but look at the fiasco of getting DW, it tooks weeks when other clubs seem to do deals in days.
I think AF has a game plan and we are inching towards it, the problem is the goal posts (excuse the pun) are shifting faster than we are improving and therefore we are in decline. With the likes of Leeds, Norwich, Southampton and Charlton and other clubs MK Dons and Huddersfield spending in L1 we have to compete with these teams if we are going to reach a Championship standard. I just can't see that happening.
Agree that we if we can imporve fitness that will be a big help. I also agree that DW will improve tactics and the players we have (but not to a Hoddle type level). Regarding Cox yes he had the service etc but we will also lose his all round contribution that created goals for others. Swings and roundabouts...
No matter how you look at it we need at least 5 quality signings in time for pre season so they can get fit and begin to gel as a team. That feels like now... We were promised less squad more quality and at the moment we've less squad and less quality.

2. You can't pick up quality on a free - wrong! (Countless examples)
3. Club is faffing around - wrong! (read the article)
4. Players on free transfers go to first club that comes along - wrong! (OTJ)
5. By selling Cox the club has no ambition - wrong! (Club had little choice in reality but did well to pick up good price).
