BREAKING NEWS: Swindon Town striker Cox set to complete Baggies move

SIMON Cox's £2million transfer to West Bromwich Albion moved a step closer today as new Baggies' boss Roberto Di Matteo confirmed he was happy for the deal to go ahead.

Di Matteo, who was unveiled at a press conference at the Hawthorns this morning, claimed he was both aware of the deal and an admirer of Town's 32-goal hitman. Cox has agreed terms with West Brom and will complete a medical early next week.

"I am aware of the deal and that we have agreed terms," said Di Matteo.

"The player will be coming in next week for a medical.

"He is a very good player, has a very good scoring record and I am happy for the deal to go ahead."

Meanwhile, Town are believed to be in talks with former Hibernian winger Alan O'Brien about a switch to the County Ground.

Very sad to see Simon go, but it was inevitable wasn't it.
In little over 18 months Simon has become a legend at the County Ground, probably even surpassing the great Super Sammy Parkin.
I wish Simon all the best for the future !

It's a shame we can't attract real quality players and keep quality players like Coxy at this club. Without that I fear the Championship will be as big a dream as the prem was.

Good luck Coxy, and thanks for keeping us up!

Will we ever be in the championship again ????..If we sell all our best players i dont think so.

We now need a forward and a new midfield not 2 players more like 5

Adios

Just read that article. Would like to know more about him but from that piece he sounds promising. Fingers crossed. At least we seem to be after a number of players which look, on the surface to be half decent. If we could just pull some of them off it would be nice.

Didn't danny say just yesterday that he wants FIVE players before August 8th.

Anyway Cox deserves his move. If wer had been greedy and held on to him, no doubt that he would have gone for peanuts at the end of the season.

Good Luck Simon.

It's not a fear it's a reality.

We're not even close to being a strong league 1 team let alone a sustainable Championship side.

If only I could win the Euro millions roll-over. Town would have a Chairman that would propell this club forward...

Smiley Miley, if you read peoples quotes properly very few people are saying the current squad will get us promotion. In fact DW and AF may actually also say that. What I and other fans take issue with is a certain number of fans who accuse this club ofhaving no ambition, not moving forward and thinking we are going to take on the new season with this team. This is not true. A player like Cox is never going to stay at a league 1 club no matter how ambitious they are.The sponsership deals the club now have are so huge when put in context its frankly laughable not t call them ambitious (EA games...one of the biggest sponsership deals outside of premieship ever?). And when you look at the quality of players we are chasing I would say we are being almost to ambitious hence why 'bigger' clubs join in the race. It has been a long time since this football club was so forward looking. There are still several months for DW to put his squad together so why are people getting upset now? Think of where we were a few years ago. Things are much brighter now. Thats why we are positive nd not looking for the worst in every STFC related news story. You should try it sometime.

Sense at last, all put into perspective, its been along time since ambition came to these boards, its almost like we have forgotten what it means, yes its slow progress, but im excited about it, to coin a phrase, rome was not built in a day.

who's moaning, I like most am very keen for this season to start, and applaud a lot of what has happened since AF & Co took over.

Realistically though, we do lack depth and quality at present, do we not?

I could bleat on about how long this club has taken my hard earned money and all that but won't bore you with the details, rather you can wonder if you choose, it has been many a year, league 2 promotion aside, since I could honestly say I have had this much confidence in the club as a whole, so there you have my realistic opinion based over many years of support.

My own view on the current situation is merely my perception of things currently, an observation, not a moan, but in my eyes a fact. OK?

Forgive me if I'm missing the point but there has been lots going on at the CG this summer. A new (defence minded) assistant manager for starters and one that DW has chosen. Also a highly respected goal-keeping coach. This completes the back-room staff and any good team must have a settled backroom with a clear direction. This is more important than just paying over the odds for any player that becomes available. Gordon Greer and David lucas to steady up the back - this is also very important as defence was a definate weak area last season. DW knows what he wants and most likely has a list of 20+ potential players but smart managers don't just jump in - patience is required. I'd expect to see 2 midfielders 2 strikers and a defenders to be added before the season starts. season is 4 weeks away and clubs are all just back to training now - DW can see what he has (how the players return) and try to complete the jig-saw from his list based on who is available, at what price etc etc. I think DW has got it spot on - he knows the score and when the right players are available he will pounce. We have already missed out on a few and that is football but it at least shows our intent. Now for all you spoon fed, trigger happy fans that have got used to the instant culture we now live in, moaning and putting others down almost as a hobby - chill the hell out and prepare for what will hoepfully be a great season.
