SWINDON TOWN: Wood believes Town are on the up

GEORGE Wood believes he has joined a club that is going places, after swapping the north east for a spell in Wiltshire.

The 56-year-old has been recruited as Town’s new goalkeeping coach after spending the past three years at Hartlepool, during which time he worked under Danny Wilson.

Wood insists Swindon’s boss is one of the best in the business and had no hesitation in heading south to join forces with him once again.

“I worked with Danny for two-and-a-half years at Hartlepool and we got on really well together,” said the former Scotland and Arsenal stopper.

“He’s a very honest, great coach, and in my opinion is one of the best I’ve worked with.

“He’s very thorough and professional and gets things right off the pitch. He sets standards for the lads as professionals off the pitch which they then have to take on to the pitch.

“When he came down here he asked me if I would be interested in joining and straight away I said ‘yes’.”

Having made the switch to the County Ground, Wood is confident Town can start heading in the right direction and believes there is huge “potential” at his new employers.

Wood said: “Swindon has always been one of those clubs which is a sleeping giant, and I am hoping to progress with Danny and the rest of the staff and hopefully get us somewhere near promotion.

“I’ve come to a football club now who have got potential, in my opinion.

“Look at the fan base, the stadium, and things like that. It is now about building the squad up, bringing in a few players and kicking on.”

Meanwhile, former Swindon target Matty Robson has completed his move to Carlisle United.

Having turned down a new contract at Hartlepool, the left-winger held talks with Danny Wilson earlier in the summer about a switch to the County Ground.

However, he chose to stay in the north and has signed a two-year deal with the Cumbrians.

'He chose to stay up North'...Not he thinks Swindon are crap, or Fitton is a tight wad, or Danny Wilson stinks of ****...Pure old love of the North...No shame in that..Family settled etc...So we don't get knocked back all the time because AF is parsimonious...far from it...Now bring on the miserable whining gits as per usual to read some negative meaning into the Robson decision...ingrates

Good, Robson is just an average Lower level league 1 player- we don't need him. Perhaps it will all kick off in the transfer market now July is here? Hopefully more pro's like Wood, will see the future of our club somewhere in the championship?

refplayer staying in the North, several issues must have swayed him, again is cjeaper cost of living, family ties etc. Don't think money was issue, its unfortunate to miss out again.
However over the last several years like many football clubs Swindon lets say haave had its financial problems.
So its down to AF and DW to convinc plays tha we re club on the way u.
ter all the Town is a nice place to live.
Mind you I came back few weeks ago and must admit was a bit of a shock. However we are in a nice part of the country
so come on Club do the PR job

Talking of goalkeepers, the word on the street is that you will sign Danny Coyne from us (tranmere) today.

I hope this is wrong as we need him at Prenton Park!

Funny how you live in Mallorca and I live in Dubai but we both have rose tinted glasses of Swindon as a place to live...God's own country...Lovely place...I miss it. Except when I'm back...

No, we're after Andy Taylor, so relax!

Not bothered about Robson. If DW rated him that much I'm sure he would have tried to sign him.

DW made it clear Robson wasn't a primary target because there are better players out there, so I don't know why you guys are still talking about him.
