TOWN'S League One rivals Southend United have won the race to sign Bristol City winger Kevin Betsy.

The 30-year-old, a long-time target for County Ground boss Maurice Malpas, opted for a switch to Roots Hall for a nominal fee last night.

"A few sides in League One and League Two showed some interest but for me it was coming to see the manager and hearing his ethos which suited me," Betsy told Southend's official website.

The news could renew Malpas's interest in wing Mark Marshall, who trialled with Town this summer and is also being tracked by Bournemouth.

I never really rated the lad, from what i heard he was lazy and woeful at times. I think perhaps he looked at past performances of the teams, i.e. in recent years Southend have done consistantly well at this level, and swindon have it all to prove. I would rather see marshall at the CG anyway, he has alot of promise and i could see him turning in to our right sided mcnamee. We would tear defences apart.

UP THE REDS! 2-0 to town saturday ;)

Southends loss, our gain. We have ample experience in the squad, its time to look at youth and Marshall fits the bill. This is probably the best thing that could happen. One day to the big kick off, can't wait!

Agree with M Mack, Marshall is fit, young and keen to make a career in football. His agent is an ex player who came through the ranks,so it could be a good move for MM(as everything a gamble)
However he should move quick as I fear if he lives near Southampton he might just opt for Bournmouth as playing in Eastliegh.
Still as to what Fitz said the other day he is so so keen on us.
"MM" do it today
Wish I could be there tomorrow, still good old BBC Back get games on PC Now

8:32am Fri 8 Aug 08

Eastleigh winger Mark Marshall who may now be a target for Swindon Town has joined cash-strapped League 2 side Bournemouth on trial.

Marshall was keen on a move to the County Ground after impressing Town boss Maurice Malpas whilst on trial earlier late last month.

Malpas had turned his attention to other targets and had Kevin Betsy joined the County Ground outfit, Marshall's chance at a contract was pretty much over.

Marshall impressed Cherries Boss Kevin Bond during a friendly between the 2 clubs and has now been given the chance to earn a contract at Bournemouth.

Swindon may still be favourites to land the Eastleigh star due to his agent Fitzroy Simpson having strong links with Town as a player and due to the club being able to offer League One Football.

I think we're re in danger of missing the point here. Whether Betsy is any good or not is a matter of opinion. The worrying factor is that he preferred Southend to Swindon. Surely there has to be something seriously wrong with the way we are selling the club to potential signings?

yeah but does it 'really' matter? he's 30, ex city player, mixed reports on his efforts.

I do not think that this is the case - Look at Casal - he could have played Champions League Football but decided to come to Swindon - I'm only guessing but i may have been down to money or seaside rock - thats why he chose Southend

Let's be honest.. It's not just one that just got away.. Plenty has got away this season. That's football and that's the Malpas Charm!
Something I have learnt to tolerate over the last few weeks. As a anti-Malpas fan I have certianly been biting my tounge for a few weeks now and will continue to bite until this team has been given a fair chance.

Get Marshall. We have enough City rejects in our team as it is!

And this talk of Casal turning down Champions League football for us.. Bullshit! Any player would be stupid to turn that down for Swindon. Maybe McClarn come to watch for a game or two but I doubt McClarn come in making offers otherwise we could have been facing a 1million + bid or something stupid.

ANYWAYS! Glad he's signed now for Blair to swap with Parkin and get Marshall and I'll be happy with that Squad

I fully understand where your coming from but there will always be some greedy bas**ards that money and only money will sway there decision on who they play for.Now AFand MnM should revert back to the original plan of bringing in younger players that will improve us and improve them,at least if we then have to lose them in a couple of seasons we will get something back from the transfers not just allowing medioca journey men to come here for there final payday.

How can you say we are not selling the club??

The very next article on this site tells of how Casal turned down Championship footie to come to us!!

Just because a City reject opted for money rather than glory doesn't mean STFC is not attractive to players.

We want the likes of Nalis and Casal - those who want to be here because of the way we sold our club to them!!

All through the summer we have attracted quality to the CG - players who think outside of their wallet know that STFC is a great prospect!!

Very disappointing that Betsy's chosen Sarfend in preference to us. Why do we always loose out when competing for a players signature? Mulgrew, Maher and now Betsy.... not good!

OldTown, Old Town says...
9:35am Fri 8 Aug 08

Good news I think that Betsy chose Sarfend.....

I think we already have the core of players we need - not bothered about some Ex City inconsistent has been.....

MM gets the players he needs - we certainly DO NOT miss out when competing for signatures any more than any other club in our league....

Agreed. Betsy is a classic journeymen who is only interested in money.
Marshall is keen to develop and wants to come here.
He has pace which is great at this level. He will not cost the earth and would be great to come off the bench for the last 20 when play is stretched.

If we don't get Marshall (and let's face he may be good, but not not necessarily ready for regular first team action),i'd be reasonably happy to persist with JP for the time being. Bearing in mind that Roberts is still on the payroll, wouldn't it make sense to stick with what we've got, give JP a chance and give Roberts a chance when he's fit. If JP doesn't cut it in the first couple of games there's always the loan market possibility.

This could be a blessing in disguise, Betsy would of been asking for big wages and if he was cack we would have been lumbered for 2 years. We now have money available for wages so use the loan market and get a young hungry lad on a season loan from the prem. We have no loan players at all at the moment which is a positive thing look what happened the year we went down when we had 5 in the starting 11 also a lot of our rivals are relying on them to build a squad.
