Murray is Town target

SCOTT Murray is at the centre of a possible Town transfer raid on M4 rivals Bristol City - while Maurice Malpas prepares to make a Championship full-back his first summer signing.

County Ground chief Malpas is confident of securing the services of an unnamed player under contract at a Championship club in the next couple of days but has also contacted Town's Ashton Gate neighbours about several targets.

Malpas revealed winger Murray is one of those he is currently keeping tabs on but admitted there were "one or two others" at their West Country rivals he has also enquired about.

Brian Wilson, Jennison Myrie-Williams and Alex Russell have been touted as potential targets but, while keeping his own counsel, Malpas insisted winger Kevin Betsy was not on his wanted list.

Scottish winger Murray, 34, has been offered a year's contract extension by City boss Gary Johnson but could be tempted by a more secure offer elsewhere.

He is currently mulling over his options on holiday but Malpas admits he will be keeping track of any developments over the coming weeks.

He said: "I have spoken to Bristol City about one or two of his players and Scott Murray is one of them.

"He has been offered another year at Bristol though as far as I am aware so that might end that.

"He is away on his holidays so I will just be keeping in touch with that one.

"It would be ideal if we could get players with some Championship experience in.

"Scott Murray does fit the bill on that one but it is more important they can do a job for us."

While any capture of Murray remains a work in progress', Malpas did reveal his full-back shortage was about to be halved.

With Jack Smith and Jamie Vincent the only recognised full backs on the books for next season, Malpas has made no secret of his desire for two more options in that area.

He said: "Everything is pretty much sorted between us and the full back in question.

"We just need to go back to his club and check it is all okay now."

Scott Murray is a good player - yeah a little old at 34 but still got 1-2 years left in him at this and possibly Championship level.

We need all the experience we can get to haul us up into the Championship - he has been there and done it with City so bring him on !!

Murray please stay on holiday, or accept the 1 year extension offered by City. Is this really a signing that's supposed to inspire more season ticket sales?
No anti City bias - just not a sensible move from any angle.

Jennison Myrie-Williams (born May 17, 1988 in Lambeth) is a footballer currently playing for Tranmere Rovers on loan from Bristol City in Football League Championship. He can play either as a left midfielder or as a striker and is noted for his lightning pace.

After playing for his club's academy side he made his senior debut on the last day of the 2005-06 season against Southend United. He began the 2006-07 season as one of Bristol City's brightest prospects, and scored his first goal, a chip shot, against Chesterfield and then scored the winning goal against Tranmere Rovers.

He has already played for the England Under 18's.

In the 2007/2008 season, Jennison spent the first three months of the season on loan at Cheltenham Town before returning to his parent club.

On the 22nd November, 2007 he joined Tranmere Rovers on a months loan, later extended to two months. He scored his first goal for Tranmere, a penalty, against Yeovil on 26th January 2008. On 28th January, Tranmere agreed to extend Myrie-Williams' loan until the end of the season.

sounds more promising. im wondering what sort of player will inspire season ticket sales? i cant see us making any big name signings. bright prospects and players with experience are what it sounds like.

Yeah, I'm sure Hull fans were saying the same about Dean Windass, who I believe is 39. At 34, Murray could still be at his peak for another 2 years. Age is not important, desire to succeed and fitness are important.

Murray had 7 goals in 21 games during citys promotion season. so a year on from then, im sure he would be a useful player to have in L1.

3 goals in only 4 apps (10 subs) last year so looks like he was used as a sub to cause problems late on.

and as M Mack states, age isnt too important. we already have the pace of mcnamee down the left, so some experience down the right could be leathal.

saying that though, i thought he'd already signed citys 1 year offer.

If he has signed a 1 year deal at City, this would mean that he is not a free agent and there would be a fee for him, don't know how much the Town have offered though? Don't care what you all think, he is the sort of player that will get us promoted, simple as!

Seen Myrle-Williams play, he's a cracking talent, would fit in well here. May have to play second fiddle to McNamee for a while, but he'll also provide competition up front. Plus, with his pace, he's the kind of guy you can bring on the bench late in the second half to really sh!t up the opposition.

he is a player with bags of league experience and promotion experience we need people like this if we are serious about getting promoted. We have a good bunch of youngsters but you need your older players to help guide the younger players when the season gets tough.

What age related problems do you mean, forgetfulness? incontinence? wearing his football shorts up around his armpits or the slight stale smell of pee on the team bus? Come on, he's in his prime at 34 and is certainly not old. Whatever problems he might bring, there not going to be as bad as the problems of a youngster like Barry Corr!

Foran spent some time on loan at League 2 side Darlington last season but had to cut his loan spell short due to a knee injury.

Foran has played for St. patrick`s Athletic, Shelbourne, Carlilse United, Oxford United, and Motherwell before joining Southend.

Scott George Murray (born May 26, 1974 Aberdeen) is a Scottish footballer for Championship club Bristol City. He is a right winger.
Club Career
He was signed by Bristol City from Aston Villa in December 1997 and was City's top scorer in the 2002-03 season.
He later joined Reading for £650,000 in June 2003, and was a first team regular for Alan Pardew. In March 2004, he rejoined Bristol City. Murray's return boosted City's form but they lost in that season's playoff final to Brighton & Hove Albion. He was made club captain during Brian Tinnion's spell as manager.
In the 2006-07 season, City were drawn against Premier League side Middlesbrough in the FA Cup. Murray scored a chip against Australian number one Mark Schwarzer to earn the Robins a 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate, however they eventually lost the tie on penalties in the replay.
A key player in City's promotion push despite a stress fracture to his fourth metatarsal bone restricting him to 37 appearances, he has signed a new one-year extension to his contract.
With all due respect to the guy, not convinced he’s a player we should be looking at. Would like to be proved wrong though, but I think we're moving in to the "might be too many miles on the clock" area, if you know what I mean!!

Murray will without doubt be a good signing 34 is nothing in todays game if you have not had an injury prone career. He will definately be useful in league 2 . Bristol city have offered him another year and dont you think this is because they still think he will be useful in the championship. i dont like city but if one of there players thinks we are a better option then thats good enough for me. all that matters is when he puts on the town shirt he gives 100% you cant ask for more than that.

The fact Gary Johnson has offered Scott Murray a 1 year deal shows that he can still do the business even in the Championship. Agreeing with Mack above, aslong as he is fit and committed then his 34 yrs is irrelevent. He scores goals and is a quick winger which will be agreat asset to the squad if he signs. He certainly is good enough to help us out of this division thats for sure.

Windass is a diferent type of player, a striker with an eye for goal and who has never had to rely on his pace to do his job.
Murray on the other hand relies soley on his pace, which he's clearly losing now and he was hardly a regular over the last two seasons at City.

dont worry!! Malpas is about to bring in an oxford reject!! Its on the swindon town vital website!! Swindon Town are currently chasing Southend United striker Richie Foran according to The Echo newspaper in Southend. Foran spent some time on loan at League 2 side Darlington last season but had to cut his loan spell short due to a knee injury. Foran has played for St. patrick`s Athletic, Shelbourne, Carlilse United, Oxford United, and Motherwell before joining Southend.
Piece of trivia for you. When Richie Foran was at Carlisle, my old pa was a traffic warden in the city. He was putting a ticket on a car when the owner walked up. It was Richie Foran who my dad recognised. They stood talking about footy and the ticket was ripped up. I saw him playing for Carlisle a couple of times and he was very good. A strong commited player whoose only problem was his disipline. Hopefully his has calmed down a bit since then.

what a grown up comment stfc4eva.......Since when were City players a problem for Swindon fans ? I think you'll find Oxford are our REAL local rivals - City's local rivals are Cardiff..... Scott Murray is a good player - yeah a little old at 34 but still got 1-2 years left in him at this and possibly Championship level. We need all the experience we can get to haul us up into the Championship - he has been there and done it with City so bring him on !!
wel he aint guna exactly wiz past the full baks on his grannymobile! lee holmes is a betta option!!
