A new era begins at Swindon Town

New Town boss Kevin MacDonald (left) with chairman Jed McCrory New Town boss Kevin MacDonald (left) with chairman Jed McCrory

KEVIN MacDonald was formally unveiled as the new Swindon Town boss yesterday and immediately stated his desire to secure promotion to the Championship within two months of taking his first job in management.

The former Aston Villa assistant manager, out of the game since the summer, plans to finish off what Paolo Di Canio started at the County Ground.

“The main aim is to win each game which comes along, and hopefully that will give us enough points to get into the Championship next season,” he said. “There would be no point in Jed (McCrory, chairman) coming to the club if it didn’t go that far forward, because it wouldn’t be viable for him either.”

MacDonald, who the Advertiser understands has been handed a deal to the summer of 2015, brings AFC Telford boss Mark Cooper to Wiltshire as his number two.

Interim goalkeeping coach Fraser Digby and interim fitness coach Michael Peacock are expected to remain at the club for the time being.

The Scot will be quite a departure from Di Canio in terms of character and temperament, as he explained: “I am quite a thoughtful person and I tend not to say too much, and when I do it’s because I have thought that through.

“Some people say that’s wrong and that you should speak off the top of your head, but that’s not the way I am.”

Any kind of performance today will depend on a tighter defence which will see the return of Nat Thompson, Macca will either replace Jay or move into midfield if Ferry is not fit, without Simon I can't see the ball being played on the ground too much and that does not suit our style if we try to play it long. Whoever plays down the flanks whether it is Luke Raffa or Gary need to pick their game up and start giving Collin, Williams or Adam Rooney some decent service, they are due some goals and it's now getting very worrying that they feeding on scraps. Williams said in his last interview he hoped to beat his target which is more than the 17 he scored last season, He'd better get a move on because time is running out for him to prove he deserves to be our main man upfront.

OTR - BBC are saying Ferry is fit and that Devera maybe too
.
Both are vital if you ask me - we were tighter at the back with JD and we all know SF makes us tick
.
Others will drop points today (Tranmere play Yeovil etc) so a draw will not be a bad result
.
Take us to 60 with 33 remaining
.
I think 87 max but more likely 85 for the title and 82/83 for auto will do it this year
.
That will mean 2 a game will do it from the last 11 - which requires decent form but not need to win 9 of the 11 which would be a big big ask
.
We will need to beat at least one possibly 2 from Yeovil, Brentford, Doncaster and Sheff to secure auto but 1 win 3 draws is not impossible as we have seen at Bournemouth and Tranmere!
.
Then we will need 4 from MK and Scunny - totalling 10 away points
.
So that is 12, 13 or 15 needed at home - which certainly is possible looking at the fixtures to take us to 82, 83 or 85

London,

We have won 1 point less away than home this season and I can see this continuing despite the fixtures we have.

Maybe we should be looking at 14-15 points away and 10-12 home.

Just a thought.

What a ridiculous post. So Sir Alex is full of jealousy is he? Celtic fans aren't passionate supporters of their club? St Andrews and Edinburgh aren't two of the best universities in the world? They didn't invent golf? Andy Murray isn't one of the world's biggest names in sport? The Queen isn't just as much Queen of Scotland as she is Queen of England?

Obviously I could be under-estimating your wit and you may have been intending this to be an ironic post, if so then my most humble of apologies. If not, I'd stick to talking about the football if I were you.

Trouble is, we have no idea what sort of team we're going to have for the rest of the season. On Tuesday night's showing we'd have trouble getting any points at all from now until the last game, and last Saturday was only marginally better. For a few matches before that our form has not been great either. Our earlier good results have put points on the board but they're no indicator of future performances.
.
If MacDonald can galvanise the troops, get at least a point today and then make a couple of shrewd acquisitions, we have a chance. The table doesn't lie but it doesn't show the whole truth either. A current form table (say last 6) would give us more idea of the size of the task MacDonald faces. Dreamo, if he gets us promoted I think you should get sculpting in the summer.

What a stupid post. He was a long way from being a legend. The worst judge of a player of any manager we have had. Cost the club massive amounts of money on contract buy outs. The best players in the last 2 years were all Wilson buys. Ritchie,Caddis,Ferry
,Flint. I'm sure he never watched any player he bought. He probably left that to Phil Spencer. The agents commission taken out of the club has been obscene.

I wouldn't read too much into recent form. It has been pretty traumatic at Swindon recently, hopefully that pressure will be gone now and everyone can concentrate on football and we re-find our previous form.

I would play :
Fodders

Thompson
Devera (if LR is correct)

Williams
Collins

A manager has all week to prepare his team and work with them. Therefore I always find it funny that fans want to see a manager screaming and shouting from the bench, this so called passion makes them a good manager...........if they are having to scream and shout a lot does this not mean that perhaps they haven't prepared them right in the first place?
Quite agree, despite his few good points there were chinques in his armour.
The subs mostly followed a set pattern and Raffa always being the sacrificial lamb. No matter how bad Macca was playing rarely did he get taken off, no plan B. He never took the blame for anything that went wrong. SuperMac seems a complete opposite, just how refreshing is that. Cool calm words at half time, guidance and help, no fear, no temper, no kicking doors, just help and working things out with players, respect, just priceless.

Where is the queue of Clubs for Pdc to take over their affairs then. I think he cooked his goose and I am amazed that he is still the subject of posts to this STFC support group.

Oops- now I'm at it!!
