Salisbury send Town to defeat

A GOAL In each half saw Town slip to a 2-0 defeat at Salisbury City in their latest pre-season friendly last night.

Djoumin Sangare's fifth-minute header gave the Blue Square Premier side the lead, and they put the result beyond any doubt when Jamal Easter wrapped things up with six minutes remaining.

First team players Phil Smith, Jack Smith, Michael Pook, Blair Sturrock and Hasney Aljofree added the experience to a largely youthful Swindon side and there was also a place for trialist John Hills, who played the full 90 minutes at left-back in his bid to earn a County Ground contract.

Youth team winger Lloyd Macklin started wide on the right hand side, while there were also inclusions for Sean Morrison, Sam Morris, Ben Joyce and former Southampton front man Niall Ranger.

Sangare gave Salisbury a dream start when he headed home a free-kick from the left, and although Town tried to change things by bringing on Kurt Hammonds and Jake Hyde, they were unable to get back in the game.

The friendly was wrapped up when Easter capitalised on some slack defending, nicking the ball off Morrison before sending a cool finish past Phil Smith.

Town: Phil Smith, Jack Smith, Sean Morrison, Hasney Aljofree, John Hills, Lloyd Macklin, Michael Pook, Sam Morris (Kurt Hammonds), Blair Sturrock, Niall Ranger (Jake Hyde), Ben Joyce.

Subs not used: Peter Brezovan, Tom Evans, Jamie Vincent.

Slackness in defence, goal against in the last ten minutes ! Where have we heard that before ? Ah well it was only the Town reserves !

Even a Town 2nd/3rd string side should do better than this. Hang your heads in shame.

Last night's result just proves the point yet again that without Cox we can't can score. C'mon Mr. Malpas "wake up n smell the coffee", "stop burying your head in the sand" and admit we are in serious need of a decent striker to partner Cox!!

A mixture of trialists, youth teamers and reserves against a strong Salisbury side.

Told us nothing. Good run out for the fringe players and a chance for trialists to impress, that's all. Let's not have the usual flood of posts stating there's problems when there isn't...

not too worried about this apart from Ben Joyce seemed to have an anoymous game. Can he challenge for a place or not?

No problems... apart from Coxy we're not scoring. If he get's injured or suspended where are the goals gonna come from?

It was a great game to watch - as long as you are a Salisbury fan! Salisbury were a good solid team that was a pleasure to watch. Swindon, were, um, NOT!

It was a poor game, but Salisbury were taking it very seriously and did play thier first team again what was essentially a reserve/youth side.

Nothing to be taken from the game in plus or negative points, cant blame the manager as he had pretty much no 1st teamers playing.

And just for the record Niall Ranger is actually "Nile Ranger", hes tall and skinny and may have potential but hes not ready for the first team yet.

It did say Nile Ranger on last nights team sheet - but I wasn't sure if that was a real name - sounds more like a 70's **** star name!!

As I am a Salisbury boy originally, and Salisbury are my second team, I was quite please with what I saw from Salisbury last night. They looked fit, strong and well organised and I suspect they will have another good season in the BSP this year. The communication stood out a mile. Centre-backs talking to full backs. Full backs talking to midfielders. Look and learn!

As for Swindon there wasn't much that could be read into the game. Most of the youths looked a little out of their depth. Macklin lacked any real threat down the wing and I wasn't too sure about Blair Sturrock playing wide on the left! It has to be said, though, Blair really can pick out a good pass! Several times he spread some lovely passes across the pitch and totally switched the play.

Hills looked slow. Maybe he lacks fitness but he was being done for pace time and time again.

Sean looked solid enough at the back although I'm sure he'll replay his second half howler a few times in his head!

Pook looked anonymous and that has to be a bit worrying for him when you think that this was non-league opposition.

Jack smith looked quality.

stop worrying about strikers!! we have corr and peacock to come back yet plus we have other positions to prioritise first! if peacock and corr doesnt work out then we maybe can worry! there wont be many teams in our league that will have 1 player like cox, let alone 2!

We had two young'uns up front and I'm afraid to say they didn't pose much of a threat. I think we maybe managed one shot on target all night.
