Lilian's age not a factor for boss
MAURICE Malpas believes Lilian Nalis has the potential to become a "valuable asset" at the County Ground after handing him a chance to stay in English football.
The Town boss revealed the French midfielder has the option of returning to his native country but insisted his first choice would be to earn a contract in Wiltshire.
Malpas also claims he has plenty of other irons in the fire' with regard to the transfer market, revealing a Dutch left-back could be heading in on trial against Cardiff City on Tuesday night.
Nalis, 36, is currently without a club after being released by Championship Plymouth at the end of last season but started training with Town yesterday in a bid for a deal.
He will play at Chippenham Town on Saturday and at home to Cardiff City on Tuesday night with Malpas admitting it is nice to finally come across some enthusiasm.
He said: "Firstly forget his age, that does not come into it. He would bring a wealth of experience to the club and has obviously talent, he has shown that all his career.
"The last few deals we have tried to do it has turned out that the targets have had no enthusiasm to come to Swindon.
"The nice thing with Lilian, right, is he has jumped at the chance. He has a chance to play in France but it would seem that is his back-up. I think if all goes well he wants to come here.
"We will watch him in training and in games and assess his fitness. It took a few days to sort out because we had to arrange flights and stuff, but I really believe he can be a good addition."
Meanwhile Malpas revealed the search goes on for a wide right midfielder and a left-back, although Malpas insisted current triallist John Hills could still prove an answer.
He said: "We do have a lad from Holland lined up to trial at left-back but if John does well then there will be need for him to come in. We are busy making sure we have the right squad."

I know Maurice has taken quite a lot of stick since he has been here, but i must say i am really impressed with the quiet determined way he is going about his business as Swindon Town FC manager! He obviously cares a lot for our club and is determined to only sign players who genuinely want to play for us and only players who he thinks will improve the team. And what really impresses me about him is that he never makes statements that he cant back up. Yes Maurice; like Roses you are starting to grow on me Maurice! All you need to do now is start winning football matches.

Agree with the comments above.
I think this shows that MM is in this for the long haul, not gonna jump ship at the first opportunity.
He's building a team that he can work with going forward and can progress to the CCC with.
The Manager wants to be here, and he's looking for players that want to be here...
Happy Days... :-)

Agree with all above posts. The one thing that would boost MM's morale is if the Town end gave us an MM song. He knows he has been given stick by quite a few fans (me included in the early days), so a song in support I think would give him a great lift and boost his desire to do well. Come on guy's, he's part of the family, so lets treat him as such.

As any Town fan with a bit of intelligence stated last season, Malpas should be given time to shape his own team and put his ideas into practice. Judge him on his actions as Swindon manager, not on what he may or may not have achieved in the past.
He was on a hiding to nothing from the start with some of the more 'intellectually challenged' among us, but it's good to see the tide appears to be turning.
Here's to a good season.

Here Here, We are all entitled to our opinions but I urge all fans now to get right behind him now because by getting behind im we are supporting his team. AFs money and skill saved our club. AF chose MM, we now have to give him a prolonged period of support. If its not working come Nov well that is different. I know little about the guy but something tells me he will be fine given time. Enjoy the games fellow supporters, turn what venom you have on the opposition!

I for one was not impressed with him, he has my full backing for this season as I agree that he is trying to change things, most importantly play football again !!!
But be sure that if he has a run at the start of the season like the one when he joined with 1 win in 10 then a lot of very sensible intellectual fans will suddenly become " intellectually challenged"
But I have been impressed with AF and am warming to MM more and more on a daily basis !!

MM says regarding signings... "We are busy making sure we have the right squad"... well what about signing another STRIKER Mr. Malpas, apart form Coxy nobody else is scoring!! I think signing someone who can score goals is slightly more important than signing a left back!

For God's sake, every single Swindon fan is behind Malpas. It goes without saying.
He wouldn't have been my first choice (wouldn't have been my fiftieth choice, to be honest) but of course I'm behind him.
At last we appear to be closing in on a couple of signings. Hopefully they will prove to be valuable additions and the squad can progress from last season's mediocrity.
In defence of MM again; obviously Maurice would like to sign another forward but he is working to a budget given to him by AF, so he has to prioritise and with 5 strikers currently at the club but only 1 left back it is obvious he has no choice but to spend some of his budget there. As for no one else apart from Coxy scoring that may well be because of lack of service...again something MM is trying to rectify as he is looking to bring in 2 midfielders. We have to be realistic and it may well be another season of consoladation but we do seem to be moving forward albeit very slowly, but considering the state of the club last season we should be very happy with this. I think next season we should have realistic hopes of a top 6 finish.

Guys I think we have enough strikers on the books, BC and cox paired together will be a fantastic partnership as would Peacock and Cox, we need to off load BS and BP if we are going to get another striker....

Sturrock and Paynter are not goalscorers. Think back to the last time we did anything at this level (scraped into the play offs) we had Parkin, Mooney and Fallon all banging the goals in.
We can't rely solely on Cox. Corr looks like a goalscorer but will he be fit?

Remember they're under contract... can't see them volunteering to join a Blue Square team and take a pay cut.
As for BC, he's never fit, he only has to cross the halfway line and he picks up yet another injury. T'is a dilema for Malpas, he seems to be stuck with 3 useless strikers!

Yes, we went through an awful patch and I didn't understand some of his decisions either, but Andrew Fitton was hardly going to get rid of him after such a short time in charge. He appointed him, and he was always going to stand by him. Rightly so, it turns out, as results turned around toward the end of the season and some of the football was pretty good, I'm sure you'll agree.
I've got a feeling good times are just around the corner - let's make negativity history.

Having glanced through all the posts so far, the general theme is that we are warming to MM in how he is going around his business in attempting to strengthen the squad.
Unless anyone else can think of something original then it will have to start with "Malpas Maplas give us a wave" once we go 3-0 up against Tranmere??
That would be good Ted as it didn`t happen when we went 3-4-5-6 nil up against Port Vale but if things go well i would be delighted to see our club united for the first time in years and hear MnMs name ring out around the ground,it would be quite an emotional moment:)

As i have said before MM was not my first choice but i am a great believer in giving someone a chance.MM needs time and support and he like all other managers know that if he does nt deliver AF will be under pressure to replace him.I hope he succeeds. We are all entitled to our opinions and my opinion is that some people have been too eager to jump on his back and this seemed unfair to me.Like i said before if the head fell off a broom handle in Cirencester MM would get the blame. So he made a few tactical mistakes whilst getting accustomed to the team and he does nt come across as the life and soul of the party on the radio interviews .This does nt mean he does nt know what hes doing. If anything he has just got on with his job with quiet dignity with the budget AF has given him.Lets not forget this fact.MM has recieved flack but not many fans dare say come on AF give MM a bigger wage budget or more transfer money etc.My opinion is that we are only 2 or 3 signings short of the right type of player to have a handy team to compete in this division.AF does not have to spend silly money but if they want someone they must show a bit of intent to go out and get them.Plus buying a couple of good players would excite fans more and accelerate ticket sales. If they get away with building a successful team on f free transfers then i will applaud them but championship players demand championship wages.Things however are better than before and i thank AF for saving the club but my gut reaction is that a couple of biggish signings would accelerate the whole town forwards.PS I dont think that Lilian is too old .Sign him on.
TJ- I agree with you, the French bloke and Marshall will be two great signings, offering experince in one and pace and youth in the other and both appear desperate to sign. Add that with just one more LB, which the iron is currently well and truly poking around in the fire and we will have a good squad to be challenging for top six.
