Ex-Premier League midfielder Nalis set for Town move?
LILIAN Nalis will start his bid for a Swindon Town contract today after Maurice Malpas turned his attention towards the former Plymouth Argyle midfielder.
The 36-year-old is expected to spend the rest of the week at the County Ground training before featuring in Saturday's friendly at Chippenham Town and Tuesday's clash at home to Cardiff City.
Nalis (pictured in yellow) was released by Argyle boss, and former Town chief, Paul Sturrock this summer after 35 Championship appearances last season, although Sturrock was almost tempted to hand him a second chance at Home Park.
A former Premier League regular with Leicester, Nalis has built a reputation as a cultured central midfielder and would more than make up for the disappointment of Kevin Maher's snub this week.
Meanwhile fellow triallists Mark Marshall and John Hills played in last night's 2-1 win at Blue Square South outfit Hampton and Richmond.
Simon Cox continued his prolific start to the summer, scoring his sixth goal in five pre-season friendlies, but Marshall had a hand in both goals leaving Malpas a tough decision to make.
Marshall is now expected to return to Eastleigh for their pre-season tour of Devon but boss Malpas admitted he had seen enough of the youngster to consider offering him a deal.
Hills should start tonight's friendly at Salisbury City as he continues his bid for full fitness while winger Anthony McNamee's foot injury is not thought to be too serious.

Maybe good for one season before he draws his pension. Hardly an inspired signing if we get him but hes not a bad player. Would prefer a local lad at the start of this career than a has bbeen to be honest.

Well obviously not one for the long term but he's a defensive midfielder, played in both Leagues above us, and was involved in 35 games for Plymouth last season. If he's kept fit and still wants to play he could be a good signing. Bit harsh to dismiss him as a has been - lets just see how he fits in and plays during the trial period.

36 is no age, Windass got Hull promoted at the age of 39 last year.
He'll be good for experience and cover

Lilian Nalis (born September 29, 1971 in France) is a French football player who is currently without a club after recently being released by Plymouth Argyle F.C.. He plays as a defensive midfielder.
Nalis started his career in his home country of France, playing for a wide variety of French clubs including Le Havre, Caen, Guingamp and Bastia. After three seasons with the Bastia, Nalis moved onto the Italian side Chievo.
After a bad spell of form at Chievo, Nalis was sold to English side Leicester City in 2003 who had just earned promotion to the Premiership. Despite Leicester being relegated straight back to the Football League Championship, Nalis stayed with the team. His only premiership goal for City was one of his best, scoring against Leeds United with a smashing 25 yard volley in 2003.[1]
During the summer 2005, Nalis was transferred to Sheffield United but after losing his place in the side early in the season, he went on loan with Coventry City before moving to Plymouth Argyle in January 2006. Nalis was voted the fans player of the year for the 2006-7 season and signed a one year extension to his contract.
It was announced in April 2008 that Nalis, would be released by Plymouth Argyle, when his contract expires in June.

he might be old, but has a good pedigree and made 35 appearances last season.
Could be useful addition to add experience to an young-ish squad.

Never heard of this guy but to be honest it's got to the stage where panic buys are required. We need to gamble on players if we are to stay up this season.
Just wait for him turn us down though.

I watched Nalis about 7 times last year watching Argyle (my dad supports them) and he was Plymouth's playmaker, hardman and engine room all in one. Total composure on the ball and can pick a pass through the tightest of gaps. If you didn't know he was 36 you'd be suprised as he does get around the pitch a hell of a lot. Argyle fans wanted him to stay, thats says a lot.

I would say MM is making sure he gets the people he wants...
1-2 seasons left in him - if he can do a job then bring him in !
With the good squad we already have, 1-2 additions will see us firing for promotion this season - BRING IT ON !!!

I agree he could be a good addition to our already average squad ('average' based on last season's finish - not 'good' based on sniffing some poppers) if we are to fight off relegation again this year we will need players who can roll their sleeves up.

Good player atthis level and will certainly compliment Easton and Timlin. A couple more additions along with Corr,Peacock and the forgotten man Roberts to come back and we have the makings of a decent squad.
I am looking forward to going to games this year not pre occupied with board room squabbles etc anybody who thinks this did not affect the players last season is deluded. Now Malpas has got these players playing footbal not hoofball at least the football should be entertaining. As long as we get off to a good start I can not see any reason why we should not be up and around the play off spots, no other teams are spending lots of money or signing players that make you think wow and that includes Leeds and Leicester

Will be a good signing and will give us some bite in midfield, 36 is still good enough for league one.
35 games in the championship shows his fitness is not a problem either, not to mention how the younger players will benefit from him too.
Rather Nallis than Maher despite the ages.

Loft conversions has made a valid point. If town are gonna have any hope of hitting the magic 6,000 they need to make more inspirational signings than they have so far. I'm not saying they need to panic buy, but time is ticking away & theres only a few friendly games left to try & encourage people to buy a season ticket. What is the latest sales figure?

I guess Lofty will say that is a failure and not good enough. He will probably also say it is all MM's fault - call me a retard and accuse me of sniffing poppers...
The truth is that 4,500 represents a MASSIVE success as far as STFC selling season tickets.
This is MORE than in any season (apart from the premier league season) over the last 25 years....
The feel good factor is deifinitely returning - that fact is obvious given the sales to date.......

Silly me I thought the reason why season tickets did not sell previously was cost/management/boar
d/and a host of other reasons
Now its the lack of new players. Any excuse
If we signed Ronaldo, Robinho and Kaka there would still be peeps saying they would not buy a season ticket because ............(blah, blah, blah)
The people of Swindon and environs should be ashamed of themselves: if it is not possible to sell 6,000 at the price offered then I suggest we do not deserve a team in the football league

I agree with that - and I think a lot of people will wait until the end of the month for pay day - I believe we will get about 5,200 in total - which for our club has to be applauded..
A couple of excellent signings toward that time may well help to push it firther toward the 6K as well - I know I want that so I can get my shirt !!!

Actually I've said all along that I expect us to sell 5,000 season tickets which is excellent for League One.
What makes it even more excellent is that we have almost the same squad which was so mediocre last season.

Message for Loft Conversions and Happy Red...please dont turn this board into your personal abuse medium against each other! Just remember we are all Town fans so should stick together and tolerate each others opinions and not be so childish and resort to names like retard, spastic etc!! So please do us all a favour you two; please kiss and make up? Then we can start concentrating on more important things like expressing our opinions about the football club/team we all support.

So please do us all a favour you two; please kiss and make up? Then we can start concentrating on more important things like expressing our opinions about the football club/team we all support.[/quote] I think you will find there is only one person throwing the abuse, but hey I have only been going regularly since the early eighties.
Lofty is probably an Oxford fan just on here to wind up,whatever he is he is certainly one thing a prze C U N T

Happy Red, well i can see you really took notice of what i said! Just remember it takes 2 to tango...and if someone is a wind up merchant then the best thing to do is ignore them...but you are in serious danger of being expelled from this forum if you carry on using language like in your last post.

Loft Conversion, you're pathetic. My 10 year old cousin is more mature than yourself, and quite frankly is probably smarter also.
Were all town fans here, so stop slating other town fans. All are entitled to their opinions etc, but when it gets to the point of you insulting others, it comes to show you're not much of a fan at all.
Back to the article though. Hes got experiance, which will go well. Hes got premiership experiance, and hes also got a good few years left in him and had a good season last year. Sign him up.

lofty.your so negative.be positive for gods sake.the club is on the turn around.it may take a lot longer than thought to get the gates up but its all good so far.4500 is great news for the club.as for the sqaud,i think it is good.my opinion on a few.-brez is arguebly the best keeper outside the prem, ifil good, hasney good, kanyuka better (watch this boy).a mate of mine(qpr fan)said he came on as a sub against saints a couple of seasons ago and man marked kenwyn jones out of the game.that cant be bad.robbo, easton, tim
lin all good enough.jp shows glimpses but needs to be more consistant.is there anybody better than macca on the wing in this division?coxy is quality, corr will be when fit and peacock has just about everything you want in a striker.as stfc fans we should all get along and get behind the boys and the club.i will say one thing though.if u think so negatively of the team then why buy a season ticket? your obviously a loyal fan,but come on,this can be a good season for us.i got that feel good factor and think that we can do it.

About Nalis he's highly rated and well thought of by plymouth and leicester fan's most are saying he is very fit and good for his age,he sounds like another windass, barmby and sherringham to be honest in terms of being able to still play.

Nalis is a great player, would have liked to him to stay at Plymouth for at least another season. Not only is a nice guy but a model proffessional. He would be a good signing for swindon.

Not worried about his age! We all have to get old sometimes and just because your 36 doesnt mean your not a fit person!! Will also add experience and has played at a higher level. If hes better than what we have already got then fair enough. ie just look at our back up/strengh in depth for midfield (Pook and Allen, that is it)

I'm in total agreement with the majority on the forum that Lil has the potentential to do a good job for us. His CV outside of the premier is very good. he has endorsements from PS and their fans. I can see him doing the kind of job of Makalei,(ex-chelsea) who despite his age is still considered to be one of the best at closing down attacks and moving the ball to the more attacking midfielders. From what I saw last season we never contained attacks outside of the danger area,
which led to conceeding too many errors within the penalty area, i.e. poor tackling and positioning gave away free kicks that our defence were not able to deal with.
If we can bring Lil in to do a Joe Butler type role, I'm all for it. Set a target for the season conceed < 40 - 45 goals we will be there abouts when it comes to the play-offs!

itd be nice to hit 6k but so what if we dont, i dont want to sign players based on how many tickets they will shift, id happily sell no more season tickets from this point of if it meant we had a team challenging for the playoffs

Lil had a slow start for us last season, and early on it looked like his legs had gone, but he steadily improved, and ended up being one of our better players.
Real shame that he was released, but age and highish wages against him. Real gentlement on and off the field, works 110% and a born leader.
Was even talk recenly that due to failures in getting new midfielders to the club that Sturrock was going to offer him a new 1 year deal. Trust me if he was a coupe of years younger he would still be with us. Talent is still there.
Will be a brilliant signing for you. Just enjoy his class... Very high work ethic, and just keeps it lovely and simple.
Good luck for next season.

Age should nt matter too much in the third division plus he sounds like a good role model for the younger players who could be influenced by him and learn from him.
