Marshall: Let me stay here!
MARK Marshall will plead with current employers Eastleigh today to let him extend his County Ground trial after a promising, if inconsistent, full Town debut.
The 20-year-old right winger created both Simon Cox's goals in Swindon's 2-1 friendly win at Blue Square South Hampton and Richmond last night but fears his dreams could be cut short by a premature recall.
Marshall is due to return to non-league Eastleigh tomorrow in time for their own pre-season tour of Devon but the lively winger is hoping a word in the right ear will see him get another chance.
He said: "Not being funny to Eastleigh but I would rather be here. I have been here for three weeks now and I really like it. I like the people, enjoy training with the lads, and it is just a shame I have to go back on the tour.
"I will speak to the gaffer at Eastleigh as soon as I can and tell him my thoughts. Obviously I am contracted to Eastleigh and I have to do what they say but that is not my first choice.
"No disrespect to them but I want to progress my game."
While Cox continued his prolific start to the summer, with his fifth and sixth goals in just five games, it was the performance of Marshall that would have had most Town fans talking.
He had his faults, make no mistake about that, but his skill and pace suggested he could cause some League One defences trouble.
It was his corner that was headed in by Cox on 20 minutes and his ferocious drive on 67 minutes that was fumbled by goalkeeper Matt Lovett, for Cox to slot home.
Elliott Frost's late consolation was a blot on the night for the visitors but no more, after a professional and encouraging display.
Michael Timlin followed up his impressive showing against Portsmouth on Friday with another solid display while Billy Paynter's selfless work in attack allowed Cox to take the glory.
It may be a slight concern to Malpas that Cox is so far the only Town player to hit the back of the net this pre-season but, with the likes of Lee Peacock, Barry Corr and Blair Sturrock all vying to partner him, a lack of goals should not be a problem.
Former Blackpool left-back John Hills was given the last half hour to impress at the start of his trial but it Marshall's 90 minutes that left many scratching their heads.
He said: "I really enjoyed that. It was a good experience and hopefully I can keep playing to try and get myself a contract.
"I thought I looked quite lively but all I need is to be consistent. When you haven't got a contract and are on trial you are a bit nervous. You don't want to make a mistake but that is when you make mistakes.
"I want to stay on. I am desperate for this. I love football and am not just doing it for the money. I want to try my best and I have to wait and see what the gaffer says.
"So hopefully you see my face again. This is where I want to be and this is what I want to do."
Town: Brezovan, Amankwaah, Ifil, Kanyuka, Vincent (Hills 59), Marshall, Timlin, McGovern, McNamee (Sturrock 78), Paynter, Cox. Subs: Smith, Smith, Pook, Morrison, Joyce.

He's still young and can only improve. I'd be happy if MM took a chance if no other right sided wide player comes on the market.

Many people think its just about skill, it certainly is not. Desire and determination to do your best is just as important. This lad seems really hungry for it and I'm sure would sweat blood for STFC, so give him a chance I say.

I suppose the moaners on here will say MM is not ambitious, how will signing up Marshall sell season tickets, etc ! Mistakes can be made with player purchases as we all know but it seems that this lad comes recommended and shows promise. Get him MM before another club moves in on him.

Seemed a little Shakes-Esque to me v Pompey, although that may be a little harsh given the step up in opposition.

I haven't even seen him play but I think we should sign him.
He'll be cheap as chips, wages wise, and is only 20 so can only improve.

malpas has said he wants to sign players that want to play for us! from what he said above, he seems very keen to join us. The only concern i have though is people may try compare to mcnamee (as i think they play a similar game) which may be a tad harsh! i think he should be given the chance by MM.

Why didn't we just keep Kaid Mohammed? He came from a similar non-league level and was doing well and had promise.
All I can see is this guy being sub every week and then being farmed out on loan.

I was impressed with Marshall in the friendly against Portsmouth. Seemed to me he worked a lot harder in the short time he was on than some of the current players & looked keen to impress. Its players like this that I am willing to pay to watch!

sign him up, the club will surely accept almost any offer for him and if it doesnt work out im sure there wont be tom much money to lose! i think he has some promise, he still has alot to learn and he seems keen to play! hes had to deal with, 1. moving up a few leagues, 2. the pressure to impress and 3. (like whoever we sign) he will need time to settle in a bit.

I thought Marshall looked out of his depth against Pompey, (which I suppose is what you'd expect of a lad from Eastleigh). He might be worth taking a punt on as a "development" player but I wouldn't want him to be our first choice on the right side.
I suppose we all need to remember we DO still have Christain Roberts so Marshall would only be brought in as back-up.

I think we should sign this lad, like everyone says he will be cheap and it seems he has the right spirit. Even if he does have a season in the reserves and only a few 1st team starts there is a good chance with our training staff that he could be a good future investment. Its not like players are knocking our doors down are they!!! Worth a gamble, i say.
I will be watching from Sweden every week..Good luck STFC

Give the lad a break, it's a big step up and he will only improve as he gets use to a better level of Football.

Agee with the general opinion of the forum, I have not seen him, but I remember a certain Mike Sumberbee was not the most talented, but with Ernie Hunt providing the passes and his pace he developed into a class winger that won England caps. This guy is definetly worth being given a chance!

It's not like we can go out and buy Ronaldo! Plus he seems to want to play for STFC which is a bonus!!
All I was trying to say above was we heard exactly the same about Kaid this time last season. We developed him and put him out on loan for experience. I just hope we don't have to do the same again as we could have just kept Kaid for another year.
Let's hope the boy becomes another McNamee!!

One point everyone is missing is that Malpas said" I will only sign players who are better than we already have"
So maybe he needs to see more of him before a decission is made and I agree with that , we are light on the right wing and I can see Easton playing there again if we sign the Frenchman and not this lad Marshall.
Clearly J.P and Roberts arn't up to it, I havn't seen Marshall yet so I'm not commenting on his ability etc.

Tractorboy, always agree with most of your comments, but on this occassion I think comparing Marshall (one for the future) and Lil N to get us through the forthcoming season, I don't see any reason why Malpas could not take both of them on, especially as their preferred positions do not compromise competion with each other.

Old town mate,I wasn't suggesting he couldn't sign both if they are good enough, maybe, hopefully they are. If Marshall is good enough then he needs to be better than J.P, Roberts and anyone else who can fit in that position.
IF both were signed how would the midfield look ? Macca, Nelis, Easton, Marshall?
Any other suggestions ?

tractorboy,
firstly please, please I am the Old town RED, There is another old town who contributes whose comments I do not always want to be associated with.
With regards to your format for the midfield I would suggest that if Lil held the holding position, Easton and Timson would be able to get forward. I would see Marshall as comepetition to Roberts and JP for the fourth position.
What do you think of that for a midfield 4-4-2

"Marshall as competition to Roberts and JP for the fourth position" It could be a great 4-4-2 !

But what about Macca ? surely we want him in ! with your selection it looks like you want to leave him out or go 4-1-4-1 or 4-5-1. Just hope we dont go for the 1/2 player we had last season :-)
Appologies to oldtown red for the little faux pas.

As far as being better than Roberts probably ave to say when robbo`s up for it Marshall is not better but bare in mind he is young and raw and most of all he is desperate to make it,i also think they gave him every chance last night by playing 80% of the balls to him and he never hide and created virtually all of are chances like i said earlier he`s not the finished article but the potential is most certainly there.PS for what its worth i took a Brentford fan with me as well as another Town fan and the Brentford fan thought Marshall was our man of the match.

After study of the opposition and study of who is in-form a squad for a particular match is decided upon.
