FULL TIME: Town 1 Portsmouth 3
SIMON Cox continued his sparkling pre-season form with a fourth goal in as many games but Town were beaten 3-1 in their pre-season friendly against FA Cup holders Portsmouth at the County Ground tonight.
Town's talisman easily converted from the penalty spot after he had been dragged down by Sol Campbell, with Town's first attempt on goal on nine minutes.
A strong Pompey side equalised with eight minutes of the half remaining, Hermann Hreidarsson finishing a deft one-two with OJ Koroma with a smart chip over the diving Peter Brezovan.
It got worse on 42 minutes as triallist Koroma raced clear of Town's defence, was brought down by Brezovan, and Jermaine Defoe finished from the penalty spot.
Sub Danijel Supotic sealed victory for Pompey with an injury-time header.
Pat Kanyuka was given the nod ahead of Jerel Ifil in the heart of Town's defence for tonight's match.
The laid back former QPR man partnered skipper Hasney Aljofree for the first pre-season friendly at the County Ground.
Cox partnered Billy Paynter in attack while Chris Allen replaced the injured Craig Easton in the centre of midfield.
Eastleigh triallist Mark Marshall has been named on the substitutes bench and will be given the last 20 minutes to impress.
Premiership Portsmouth named England internationals David James, Jermaine Defoe and Sol Campbell in their starting line-up, but £11million buy Peter Crouch is forced to wait for his debut - named on the bench.
While Pompey dominated possession in the early stages it was Town who created the better chances.
The dangerous Anthony McNamee was denied brilliantly by James after turning Campbell in the area while Cox had a goal disallowed for offside after more good approach play by McNamee.
At the other end Brezovan tipped over a dipping volley from Hreidarsson before two goals in the space of five minutes saw Pompey ahead.
The second half proved to be the McNamee show, Town's winger tormenting substitute full-back Martin Cranie and finally leaving to a standing ovation just before the end.
His good left-wing cross saw Marshall's scrambled shot cleared by sub keeper Asmir Begovic.
Then Distin headed a McNamee cross towards his own goal on 55 minutes, with Begovic making a fantastic reaction save.
Two minutes later, Paynter appeared to be pushed by Noe Pamarot as they competed for another McNamee delivery.
Crouch came on midway through the half for his Portsmouth debut and headed wide after a cross from Arnold Mvuemba.
But Paynter wasted a golden opportunity to equalise on 69 minutes as he head McNamee's cross wide while unmarked eight yards out.
Pompey wrapped up victory in injury time as sub Danijel Supotic headed into the top corner from a Ben Sahar cross.
TOWN: Peter Brezovan (P Smith 45), Kevin Amankwaah (Ifil 63), Patrick Kanyuka (J Smith 63), Hasney Aljofree (Sean Morrison 83), Jamie Vincent, Jon-Paul McGovern, Michael Timlin, Anthony McNamee (Ben Joyce 88), Chris Allen (Marshall 45), Billy Paynter, Simon Cox (B Sturrock 75).
SUBS: Michael Pook.
PORTSMOUTH: David James (Asmir Begovic 45), Lauren (Martin Cranie 45), Sol Campbell (Sylvain Distin 45), Noe Paramot, Hermann Hreidarsson (Djimi Traore 45), Arnold Mvuemba (Danijel Supotic 83), Pedro Mendes (Sean Davies 45), Papa Bouba Diop (Sulley Muntari 45), Richard Hughes (Christophe 83), Jermaine Defoe (Peter Crouch 45), OJ Koroma (Ben Sahar 45).

Generally good team selection but why is Aljofree in the starting eleven, I don't rate him myself.

That was a good game, great atmosphere too, better than we've had for a while. And I met John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club after the game - what a bonus!!

good performance, and the team are playing solid football now, and passing it nicely.
Amankwaah looks like a fairly good capture, and links up nicely with JP McGovern. Marshall looks good too, got a lot of pace.
I also met John Portsmouth, living legend he is.

If you know anything about football it's that the most valuable thing you can have at the back is someone who can read a game of football. Aljofree does this well. He cuts things out and is calm on the ball. Ifil is a physical bustling player like Kanuka and from what I've seen of Morrison he looks good but needs time to make the step up. You must have a leader there which is what Aljofree is.....

Let's hear it for MacNamee. He's...simply THE BEST!!!
Crowds will increase this season just to watch him, and there will more scouts with every game. Hope Andrew Fitton can resist the cheques being waved around.
There's also the makings of a reasonable team around him.

I think we looked OK tonight. A little lightweight in Midfield but then we are missing players and this was a premiership side they were up against. In all I think it was a good performance, I just worry that If we lost Cox and macnamee then our goal scoring threat (Little as it is) would be completely gone. I don't know what to make of Painter, I really want to like him but he just doesn't do enough for me. I don't think Corr will ever be fit long enough to make a difference to STFC which is a shame as we all know he's a true goal scorer. So To Blair, another I'd like to like but I'm surprised he's even still here, my suspicion is that if MM had got another good qaulity striker then Blair would have been the first of the options out the door. (unless he has another seasons' contract already in place?. We're still missing something, anyone who can help please submit suggestions to MM! Perhaps it's a really creative central midfielder?

I like Brez, Ifil, Macnamee & Cox. The rest were very average & didnt really impress me at all. Would give Marshall some more games. His work rate was excellent & looks like he could be another Macnamee in time. Vincent & Paynter singled out as being particularly poor. We need another striker if Corr doesnt get fit as I'd be surprised if anybody apart from Cox will score more than 15 goals this season.

Given todays performance, if we play like that throughout the season then we can go up, or be there or thereabouts.

What can you say? MacNamee was brilliant, especially 2nd half. Just a pity nobody quite got on the end of his superb crosses. Remember, he was turning a PREMIER LEAGUE right back inside out time after time. MacNamee is worth the price of a season ticket alone. Well done MM and the team. Still too many hopeless balls into no mans land for my liking but still a very good performance. Bring on Tranmere.

Noelsters right, we need to get on the end of crosses. If Malpas focuses on that in training for a while, and we start getting on the end then we'll be a very dangerous team.

Enjoyed the game last night! McNammee was pure class! If he can skin premiership players then god help the league 1 defences.
The difference in class, basically was the finishing. Swindon had about 6 chances. (mainly falling to Paynter, where he had 1 chance in the 1st half and then a couple of headers in the 2nd half, which he should have scored) and Pompey had about 4 shots on goal all game and scored 3. Again we are not going to be playing sides of that quality week in week out. They create space, which in turn gives them time on the ball to pass it around. But all in all i thought Swindon did well. I still would get another striker like Paynter (ie a link up striker) but with Cox's natural finishing abilities. But again that means spending lots of money and every club in the league are looking for a player of that ability.

we definetly need another striker, i will be surprised if paynter scores more than 5 or 6 this year. he annoys me, when he loses the ball he goes down or argues with the ref and rarely chases after it.

Totally agree, I get annoyed every time Paynter is playing, half the time he looks like he can't be bothered. He gets pushed of the ball to easily and then stands there complaining, if the ball isn't at his feet he doesn't go after it. To be honestI would prefer Sturrock over him at least Sturrock does try.

Lets give Marshall a little time chaps, Macca didnt look a player when he arrived here. Marshall will have been nervous and uncertain. You cant expect him to deliver a Ronaldo performance in game 1. Mr Peacock said on the radio that the boy had genuine ability and pace. He also said for those of you at the game ,that macca was unstoppable in training and all peaks could do was stand off him, make him laugh and call for back up!
Enjoy the season everyone, just thank the lord for AF and give MM a fair chance.

I think we still need a defender, 2 midfield and a striker as good as cox. dont think we shall see much of corr again this season, really only leaves us with peacs, billy lad, sturruck and joyce.. peacs and joyce will do well but the other 2, could spare up some cash to bring in 1 decent goal scorer.
dont no why we are payin money for a chief scout as to now i aint seen that they done anything apart from drive to bristol and look at scum..
We will probably wait to the season starts and get a few players on loan as we cant recruit them on a perm basis..there has to be some good youngsters from prem clubs who cant get look in at there clubs yet and bringin these lads on loan could be a good bet, they are hungry to play football and will keep chasing, than they might like the idea of playin first team football, see the town are going places and wanna stay instead of wastin away in reserves if they are lucky to even get that close.
If thats no good than send the scouts to spain where they are comfortable on the ball, find space and can pass, instead of just puntin the ball to nobody.
Instead of puntin up the pitch, if we had comfortable players on the ball, like allen can be than we could hold possesion much much better..

Fact is ,if we are to be SERIOUS promotion contenders,we WILL have to get another proven striker.Coxy is great,Corr is always injured,Painter and Sturrock are not up tp the job,and Peacock is unlikly to score more than 8/9 goals a season.Good performance last night, they look up for it and FIT,but we will need another striker!!!
