Alan – Portsmouth's Wembley run can strike chord of hope with Town fans

ALAN McLoughlin has urged the County Ground faithful to take heart from Portsmouth's rags to riches story - insisting the good times can return to Wiltshire.

The former Pompey and Swindon legend will be at Wembley for tomorrow's FA Cup final between Cardiff and the Fratton Park outfit, and insists Town can draw inspiration from a real success story on the South Coast.

McLoughlin describes his period at Fratton Park between 1992 and 1999 as "dark days financially" as the club now sit 90 minutes away from landing their first FA Cup since 1939.

Town fans can sympathise with McLoughlin's tales of players not getting paid and periods of administration after a financially disastrous last decade, but with better times seemingly ahead, he insists dreams can still be realised.

He said: "I think Swindon fans should look at what has happened at Portsmouth and take encouragement from that.

"When I was there we had periods when we were not getting paid and we went into administration.

"Milan Mandaric came in and saved the club, like Andrew Fitton has done here.

"Look at Portsmouth now. They are in an FA Cup final and a top side in the Premier League.

"Why can't Swindon look at that and dream of success like that one day themselves."

McLoughlin, who made more than 300 appearances for Portsmouth and more than 100 for Town in an illustrious career, is now a radio commentator for both clubs.

He has reported on every Portsmouth game for the last three years and will be taking his place in the press box for tomorrow's Wembley showpiece.

Swindon will never become a Premier League Club under Malpas. I think personally that if we were to be promoted to the Champoinship we will need reinforcements which have experienced that league. This might mean that Fitton might have to dip into his pocket.

Bristol City wernt keep on Johnson at the beginning and now look, we appear to be in an ages of the buck stop immediately at the manager, surely Rambo, Malpas should be given time to prepear his own squad, he brought in Mcnamee who is superb, Kanayuka, who I right highly and Timlin, who was consistant! I cant believe that the man has been in the job 3-4 months and people want a change! Fergie had a really poor start at United and he has turned it around! 6 Months ago this club was dying, and now people want the world!!! I know there are mixed views on the gaffer, but surely the man needs his own team!

This Malpas negativity is getting really tedious now from several posters. Some will never be happy. I completely agree with STFCHero - give the man a chance and cut him some slack for gods sake.

Forgive me, for this is a slight digression...but just reading an article containing Alan McLaughlin and Wembley....I am now sat at my desk daydreaming about that hot day, the absolutely superb football we played, the fact that we would not have been flattered by a 5 or 6 nil scoreline, AM's burst through the middle....the shot...the deflection off Gary Bennetts' knee.....
I know what happened after was absolutely numbing, followed by real pain, but that day is never to be forgotten.
Ah well....better do a bit of work I suppose......

The simple fact is that if Malpas doesn't succeed next season, Mr Fitton will not hang about. He does not want his plan for the Championship stalled and make him look silly, he will make the changes needed. In the mean time we need to do our bit to help Maurice succeed and give vocal support to all at the club. Buying a season ticket would be a good start if you can afford it. To put into perspective, a season ticket at Oxford this coming season will cost you 223 pounds, 6 pounds less than at Town. That makes our season tickets look excellent value.

Thank goodness the tide seems to have changed and quite rightly fans are prepared to give MM the support he needs.

If he doesn't perform next year then AF wil make his decision, until then lets get 100% behind the club as a whole, for the first time in years!!

As for Alan Mac last time I spoke to the bloke he was telling me about that goal, I mentioned the deflection, to which Macca said "Deflection??? What are you on about, I hit that as sweet as a nut!!"

Hope the Pompey fans (and Alan Mac) enjoy their day tomorrow, and win the cup!!

Like many od stfc fans we all looked at MM when he was appointed, who is he?? then we tumbled down the table, I then said if he can produce results out of the last 4 games he should be given the chance to build his own team.
It maybe loan players/freebies who cares as long as they perform on the pitch.
In fairness from day one he was not the high profile manager most of us wanted, as a previous comment said lets give him until xmas before any changes should be even talked about.
As to the good times I started at the cg in Dec 61 gates were 20000+ for most games, now were are lucky to get 7000+
So Swindon has grown as a Town now the club needs support in large numbers look at LEEDS amazing what gate revenues can do.
To start if we aimed at 10000 that would please AF and the new board plus support the players.
So lets hope the "GOOD TIMES ARE BACK"
no matter what division we are in

I think i have said these things before about our current situation.Ady Williams was critisized for being too inexperienced for his role at the club. How the hell can he gain any experience if he doesnt give it a go.Malpas will be judged on results but the pair of them need time and support. They know themselves that they need to get it right so what is the point in adding more pressure on them.If things dont work out AF will act.Ihope they do get it right. Some Everton fans wanted rid Howard Kendall before he won them a few trophies and Man U wanted Fergie out.Iam not sure if MMs appointment was the right one but in the meantime i shall support him as a town fan.Yes MM is unknown at the moment but i can see why AF is trying him.If AF had appointed a big name manager we only need to string a few results together then off they go to a bigger club. And yes what a game that Wembley final was.

Totally agree too. I remember an untried manager taking over at STFC & only winning 1 match in his first 10.
    His name ?
    Lou Macari

Hero whilst I agree with most of what you say, why do town fans keep bringing up ferguson, it is a ridiculous comparison, ferguson had a track record and was a proven manager with european cups and championships under his belt, no comparison to a dour scot with 17 games of management before being sacked.

And as for the man needing his own team, no he took over a team who were two points off a play off spot and 2 games in hand, then nearly relegated us !! That my friend isn't all !!
I started off saying give him time, then I looked at his continualy baffling tactics, team selection and lack of man management and started to realise that this isn't the man to get us anywhere, however I have been encouraged in the last few games but again baffled at the release of nicho and Kaid.

But I am supporting the team, but for me Malpas has already shown that he isn't the right man for the job.

I will be buying myself and the wife a season ticket and I will be behind him for next year, but if we go on a saimilar run as last year then he HAS to go !!

As for wanting the world !! I think that may be your own oppinion, I personaly just want a manager who knows what he is doing, and MM hasn't really shown me that, we aren't a premiership club and doubt we ever will be, but we should dream of being there one day !! As for the championship, that is achievable for us and not wanting the world...

King Louigi's poor start was down to certain players led by Jake Findlay the goalie ,having all night parties most nights in the players hostel in Shrivenham Rd.
Lou found out about this, sacked Findlay and took the remaining players on a severely strict fitness regime.
The man who blew the whistle ? a certain manager of a newly promoted to the Championship club.

Well` tractorboy, isn't this a little similar to see the players in the Bank on thursday and fridays drinking !!!

Very much so, sadly this has been happening with most managers since Lou left, we need another discipliarian like him.
Lou used to phone around the pubs and also visit the players homes unexpectedly.

I too am guilty of bringing up Fergusons name but in this world of fast foods and instant success it could mean any manager who is given a rough ride before being given a fair chance.Even in the prem they can all spend as many millions as they wish but many of those millions will be spent with no trophy at the end of it.MM may not prove to be good for us but then again he could turn out to be ok .I dont want to be seen as fickle because i cant take it on the chin if the guy loses a few games trying to find his feet.Ask Gary Johnson down the M4.One of my workmates wanted him out and now he wants children with him.

Ah yes mon aimee - the one nil massacre as it became known - you were right could 've easily been 5 or 6 - ... McClaren spraying 45 yard passes to team mates feet and Big Dunc charging in on goal. The superb defence marshalled by the mighty Fridge with ooH Shaun Taylor along side him backed up by Diggers in goal, ably assisted by Kers, Zippy, Gitto,Tommy J, Chalky & Stigger Foley!-What a miss when Chalky rounded Norman and hit the post! tears rolling down my face -we were there in there in the big time for the first time ...then the demotion... never was the same when we beat Leicester although the game was a cracker ... it was I think because we felt we'd been cheated the first time!

What STFC were found guilty of -was going on all through the football league and Man U and Spurs -everybody was at it - undeclared payments to players . The league and IR used little old STFC as the scapegoats while the big fish got off scot free or with a mild rap over the knuckles. It all kicked off when allegedly a female with designs on the chairman's job leaked information to the People who managed to dig enough dirt for 3 or so exposes' -see wiKipedia history of STFC for more details. That little charade probably set the club back a good ten years or so! And those said to be involved were supposed to be "loyal supporters"

Malkym, I'd forgotton about the part played by the scorned woman, I wonder what happened to her, was she run out of town? You are quite right to say we were the scapegoat when all the clubs were at it. Wasn't it the situation with Alan Mayes that was the main case against us.

As far as Spurs were concerned they were deducted 12 points, only to have them given back and then fined £100k, a derisiry amount for a big club like them. As the saying goes, one rule for the rich and another for the poor!

Not only were STFC treated as an example by the league and inland revenue, while the big boys got away with it. Master Bates at the FA was the driving force behind our punishment, then he was in charge at Chelsea when they were caught out for illegally buying Graham Roberts' house in Scotland to ease his transfer from Rangers.

Of course it was pure coincidence that Chelsea were only fined around £10K, yet he was chairman of the FA.

Coming up to date, I agree with most of the comments above, there are signs of a turnaround at the CG, maybe - just maybe. C'mon the Reds!

AT FIRST THEY WERE DEDUCTED POINTS AND THROWN OUT OF THE FA CUP.THEN ALAN SUGAR THERE CHAIR MAN. AT THAT TIME HE APPEALED. THEN THEY WERE LET BACK IN THE CUP AND THERE FINE WAS SLASHED BY A LOT. I THINK THEY HAD SOME1 ON THE FA BOARD AS WELL.
