Smith warns teammates it's time to play for their futures
JACK Smith insists no-one can be sure of their County Ground future as Town's ominous slide down League One continues to gather pace.
A dismal run of one win in nine games has seen Town drop to just nine points off the relegation zone, and Smith believes everyone is fighting for their futures.
The Robins' full-back is one of eight players out of contract in the summer but he insists even those safe in the knowledge their deal still has time to run are entering the unknown.
He said: "There is a lot to play for because myself and a few others are still out of contract in the summer.
"We have a lot to play for because we don't want to be without a job come the summer.
"If you are not with a club in pre-season it makes it really hard to come back from.
"Even the lads who are still in contract though are not safe, because if you are not doing it the manager will have no hesitation in putting someone in that is.
"That is why there is no danger of any of us just playing out the season.
"The play-offs may be out of our reach now but we all know these are a big seven games coming up for all of us."
With a trip to Tranmere coming up on Friday night, followed by tough tests against the likes of Oldham, and Doncaster, Smith knows there is a real danger of the season ending in anti-climax.
But he still insists their poor run of results do not tell the whole story.
"We are looking over our shoulders a little bit," he said.
"We don't want to stay up by default though, we want to stay up because we are a good side.
"We don't want to be looking over our shoulders for the last few games.
"We have been playing well in the main though but just not picking up the points."

I don't think you have too much to worry about Jack, can't see us getting shot of one of a few that can actually pass a ball on the ground

I'd get rid of most of the currant squad, there not good enough to play in league 1. I was one who said we should give MM a chance too prove himslef at the club,. I am changing my views after the 15 or so game he's had in charge. I think AF should make a public statement on the currant state of affairs regards regards the players and manager. I went on http://www.leagueman
agers.com/index.html and looked up MM they couldn't put a profile together for MM. I feel we've got just enough points to avoid the drop. but it don't hide the fact that we are a very poor side indeed.

I can see him being released as MM style of play just seems to be hoof it and hope something happens. Hope Jack Smith stays as he's one of are better defenders we have, much better than Jamie 'can't pass the ball on the ground' Vincent.
I hope AF see sense and gets rid of Malpas before he has a chance to totally mess this team up in the summer!!!!

Quote from above acticle. "Jack Smith insists no-one can be sure of their County Ground future as Town's ominous slide down League One continues to gather pace". Jack, does this include the manager. Lets hope so. If Jack goes, it shows that Malpass really doesn't know what he is doing as Jack can play rather than just hoof the ball. Oh!, just in case I haven't said it for a while, MALPASS OUT!!!

it looked like 8 or 9 of you were doing just that on monday.
thinking seriously about not renewing season ticket next season.

I do not subscribe to the view that this is a poor side. When they are on form they can beat any team in this league. They are just poorly led and motivated which has undermind their self confidence. Look Ifil he is half the player he was in the first half of the season. If Malpas was in charge of £100 million squad we would still be sh1te.

Born @ : They are so seldom on form nowadays for the reason which seems obvious to all the PAYING fans. That makes them easy meat for other teams doesn`t it ? Phew ! How soon will AF do something to change this sad downward spiral ?

I think AF is going to ride out this storm until the end of the season, in the hope we can scrape through. Its a gamble, if I was him I would secretly bring in some advisor for MM the bloke appears to be out of his depth with the situation. Even if the results pick up I think the seeds have been sown for the big E at the end of the season for MM he seems a liability and non acheiver.

One thing I would like to add is that I do trust AF and think he will do whatever he believes is best for STFC.

I think Paynter/cox is better than Sturrock/cox, i'd bring blair on last 15 mins. These are only my views and lots will disagree but one thing that 99% agree is that the jury have unamimously reached their verdict Malpas has murdered the team!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately it is the last few month's performances that will make up peoples minds whether to renew their season tickets..from all the comments it would appear that if MM is in charge next season a lot of people including myself wont renew

On the same thread, we watch regularly (25 games so far) and were seriously thinking of buying season tickets for next term. Now we are not. I don't want to watch what was a decent team four months ago disintegrate further. Please AF, act quickly.

Returning to what the Adver headline said - wrong!! The players should be playing for their futures in every game.

1. brez in brez out, smith in smith out, brez in..
result.. 2 goalkeepers low on confidance too scared to make a mistake.
2.swap easton(one of the best central midfielders weve had for years imo)for an out of form mcgovern.
3.cox scoring for fun before mm came.
cant hit a cows @rse with a banjo now!
4.playing comminges(great player)at left back instead of right back when imo nicolas hasnt done much wrong.
5.the beast been tamed to a pussycat.
6.bringing zabouub off the bench on monday(the most leftsided player i hav ever seen) and playing him on the RIGHT.
what next? move ifil up to midfield playmaker cos hes got an eye for a pass??
i was for giving malpas time, but strange decisions and tactics has lost my patients.

Sorry janaage...but that was a very stupid statement to make, It is not the fans who play for Swindon Town FC, so dont blame us for the teams relegation form since MM arrived!!! Under Paul Sturrock we had a half decent team who were pushing hard for a play off place, since MM has taken over the same players are losing nearly every game! It doesnt take a brain surgeon to spot the link...what is your answer then? Wait until half way through next season and we are bottom of this mediocre league before getting a decent manager in? By then it could well be too late. I was going to Tranmere on Friday evening, but i have no stomach for it now, dont want to spend precious time and money watching a demoralised team get beat again, while MM sits clueless in the dug out leaving Dave and Ady to try and motivate the team! I am afraid the time for excuses has now ended...ask the Motherwell supporters what they think, they have seen it happen to them.

i dont think janaage is suggesting that swindon fans are at fault, we can all see where the problems lie. but i think he is suggesting that as soon as town start playing badly, which lets face it has been for many a season now, they threaten to stop going.
i go to between 10-15 games a season so i cant speak for as season ticket holder but i go because i support the club from where im from. i would never stop going just because i dont like the manager or the way we play.

cant see it happening till the start of next season to be honest. i imagine we'll win and draw a few of the last games and remain around the same position but if we start next season with this form then MM will be gone.

Should the team play attractive football then we'll be there for every game and will actually be giving the club more money over a season than by buying season tickets. But if not...then we wouldn't go so often. I remember the dire days of McMahon as manager, what a contrast to the guys who managed in the years before, and i fear the same is happening. I watch enough to express my views but you must be deluded if you would buy a season ticket regardless of the quality of the football you were going to watch.

But with MM in charge i really believe in just a few short months we have gone backwards alarmingly, there doesnt seem to be any plan or direction, we just seem to be floundering with no leadership for the players or fans! I still go to 15 to 20 games a season either home or away so when i say i may not go to Tranmere believe me i do not say it lightly...i really love my club and will always follow them, even though where i now live i have Man U, Man City etc just down the road, but i would rather travel 200 miles to watch my team! All we are asking for a plan for the future of the team, i always felt that with Paul Sturrock in charge we had a plan, we were moving forward slowly but surely, but now all i see is a demoralised team, constant baffling changes to the side (Brez is a prime example) the guy just sits in the dug out and lets his assistants do the shouting etc, and to cap it all he just does not have any relationship with us fans...i have been to a lot of away matches since he has been here and not once has he come over to us to say thank you...he leaves that to the players and Dave Byrne!! I dont mind getting beat but it is the way we get beat that troubles me at the moment, there is no consistency at all, we played brilliantly against Carlisle and then crap away to Brighton and at home to Southend, what is that all about? The bottom line is that i want to see my (our) team do well and move forward, all i can see with this "manager" is league 2 football again!

I was 100% behind getting rid of Diamandis & Co but now it seems the devil is dead - let's kill the devil.
Malpas has slipped nicely into Mike D's shoes as Dr Evil and now a lot of fans aren't giving the bloke a fair crack of the whip.
Some of our supporters are sounding like demented geordies here, Malpas has barely had time to make his mark here. Give him a chance.
And if you don't mind I'd rather make my own mind up than rely on the thoughts of some Motherwell supporters. Malpas did alright in the Scotland set up and I'm all for giving him a fair crack of the whip.
Now put the pitch forks away and start getting behind the club as a whole!

I think most people here would agree that they can accept a town defeat as long as they witness a reasonable standard of footy being played and the players showing heart and commitment. Recent weeks have shown little of this. Even when we showed it against Carlisle for example, we didn't get the reward. The problem is that the team seems disorganised and lacking in confidence. This without dought is the managers domain and he is failing. Fans threaten not to attend because it hurts and is frustrating to watch a disfunctional team. And lets not forget the cost of watching a frustrating and disfunctional team. I'm not surprised people are reluctant to go at the moment. They are not fair weather fans, far from it, they are just frustrated by the current state of the team.

i agree lazaat. couldnt doubt that commitment!
i blame mandric. seeing leicester struggle since holloway took over and knowing sturrock might have still been here for the full season. we may not have succeeded but i think we may have become a force for next season.
unfortunatly i missed the carlisle game but saw southend! bit of a mistake there but i agree the team do look demoralised. we seem to lose concentration and get punished for it like the leyton orient game. but can play well and pressure teams but not score. certain players have fallen out of form at the same time and obviously this gets blamed on MM but there could be other reasons for this that we dont know.
it is a concern that MM hasnt got much previous management experience, only coaching roles.

janaage, when you say put the pitchforks away you are obviously referring to most of us as thick peasant wiltshire moonrakers? I dont intend to join in the insults with you...sorry! And as for "not listening to the thoughts of some Motherwell supporters"...we are talking about hundreds of Motherwell supporters and there "thoughts" as you put it are facts, i believe the guys record up there was played 17 but won only once! These are facts, not mere "thoughts"! And as for MM having a good record in the Scottish set up; the man was only ever a manager once before he came to us, and that was not for Scotland janaage, so what are you talking about? I think we would all agree that he would make a good assistant manager so your point is invalid. And as for you insinuation that we are just a bunch of moaners who as soon as one manager goes we move on to the next, well in all my years of supporting the Town that is not my experience. OK lets give the man more time, but lets all hope and pray that after he has been given "a fair crack of the whip" we are not doomed for the 2nd division again! I agree with you about all getting behind the club, but please no more comments about pitch forks etc...we will respect your views but we ask that you also respect ours?

Malpas was assistant at Dundee Utd, coach at Dundee Utd and was involved in the u-21 Scotland set up as assistant and manager.
The bloke is not some fly by night cowboy here to take us down.
Just because you have not taken an interest in the fella's career doesn't mean he's been sat up north in the pub for the last 10 years.
Would like our fans to show a little respect to the bloke.
As for the pitch forks comment it was a picture I got into my head, wasn't implying anyone of you were idiots, just seems to be a bit of a witch hunt at the moment.

Im not pro malpas or anti malpas but i got a question for all the anti malpas.actions speak louder then words.ive seen loads on here saying get him out etc so if you want him out that bad why are you not protesting at the ground ? you can say much as you want on here but what is that going to do,if you really want the board to hear you then you need to protest.or do most of you on here not go and just like to have your say.Like i said actions speak louder then words.Maybe people are scared to protest but is that not being passionate about the club and wanting success.

As i also said he would probably make a really decent assistant manager, even the Motherwell supporters agree on that point, but they and most of the Town supporters are fast coming to the conclusion that he just doesnt cut it as a MANAGER, hope that is now fully understood? As for standing outside the ground and protesting, that is something that should only be done as a very last resort, i would hope long before that situation happened the board would have seen sense and dismissed him. I am happy to give MM until the end of the season, after all it is highly unlikely that we will be relegated this season (thanks largely to the 10 points deduction from Bournmouth and Luton), but i really dont want to see us caught up in a relegation battle next season before someone realises we are going nowhere with this guy! You seem intent on defending the guy janaage, please tell me what do you base your optimism of him on? Certainly not a past record of succesful management. One more thing janaage...we are all posting our comments on this forum, how does that make us shout louder?

I think it's fair to say the more angry or peeved off about something you are, the more chance of coming on to a site and posting your thoughts. I think people who are more willing to give the fella a go are less inclined to come on here and post. Same at a match, which is why you often hear the boo's that accompany Phil Smith's name, Blair Sturrock's name, which I also think is out of order.
I defend MM because I do think some of the football he's trying to get the team to play is good, we ripped Forest, Carlisle and to a certain extent Leeds apart, just a shame that our strikers can't hit the back of the net at the moment.
If it wasn't for a very wasteful Paynter and Peacock we'd have got something out of the match on Monday.
At Leyton Orient Cox missed an absolute sitter, which left Orient fans telling me after how they couldn't believe we didn't win.
Against Huddersfield we should have been 3 up inside 10 minutes, at Brighton how did that first effort not go in (before our first goal).
We just need a little more luck, a little more confidence and we'll start picking up the points.
I honestly do not see why, other than not having much of an outgoing personality, MM has done to whip up such a storm of negative feeling.
Oh and Malpas also managed the u-21 side, he didn't just assist, albeit on a temporary basis. Also he was in charge of Motherwell at a very (finanically) poor period at Motherwell.

janaage, if you were not implying we were idiots with your pitch fork comment, then it's alright then to call us sheep (previous post) and demented geordies is it. I will not lower myself with name calling, 95% of this forum has a different opinion to you, personnally I have no wish to research the career history of Malpas, because I have never thought he was the right person to take us forward. actions speak louder than words and that is what I judge the man on now on the past few months and time will tell how it goes for the next 7 games. A decision of his worth HAS to be made then if things do not improve!

janaage, we could go on all day picking each other up on things you say and things i say...but we are both Swindon supporters and obviously we both have the clubs best interests at heart, so what say we call it a draw? I agree with a lot of your points, and i do believe the strikers have missed some easy chances, but i feel that would be an over simplication, i am sure if we were both honest that we could equally come up with times when the opposition could have scored more goals and missed easy chances, the fact is we are losing most of the games we play and from the matches i have been watching these players dont look the same as the players that played under Paul Sturrock. Ok lets give the guy a chance, i would much rather come on here with positive postings than negative...but as i said janaage we both want the same thing, as do all true Swindon Town fans, and that is a succesful team and club, so lets not argue amongst ourselves and all get behind the team? And...if we all came on here and said the same things wouldnt this board be boring? Finally, nothing would please me more to come on here in the future and eat humble pie if MM proved to be a really succesful manager.

I have previously beenn in support of MM, I have been vocal about giving him time, but recently some of his substitutions and team selection are starting to make me think that he doesn't have a clue what he is doing, if that is the case then he shouldn't be given time as that will only result in reduced gates and lower division football, not to mention that we wont have any players who actually want to play for us. I also dont agree that we have a poor team, they obviously wanted to play for Sturrock and not to forget they were playing well when they were not being paid properly or on time, so the manager should be able to motivate the players, saying that Managing a football team is about getting results and his record at Town at the moment is just not good enough, neither was his previous managerial record, but for now I think we are stuck with him. At least we should have enough points to stay up.

I will get a ticket next season regardless , I just can't imagine what I would do with myself if I did'nt go to Theatre of Shattered Dreams on a Saturday ooops or is it SN1 ?. If I did'nt attend I would feel like a cheat moaning on here without actually seeing it for myself, say what you will its never dull is it , first 6 months all protests doom and gloom then we get some cash and by some miracle the same squad are going to take us into Championship footie , then reality kicks in and with it the anger , would'nt it be boring if we held 12 th slot all year and never did anything . All is well we will enjoy some good laughs again next season for sure , The glass is filling up nicely .

The loan transfer window ends at 5.00pm tomorrow. MM and AF could give the club a well deserved boost by taking the opportunity to go out and get a reliable, commanding defender -especially now that Comminges is going to miss the next 2 matches after Tranmere.

Lazaat, I'll go with the draw!!
Fair play to all, it;s a game of opinions, I'll stick to mine, and for those who have said give him until at least the end of the season, well I think that's fair enough.
As for the "Uncle Maurice" quip, I did wonder how long it'd be before that kind of link was suggested. Just for clarity I am in no way connected with the Malpas family whatsoever, I'm just a town fan with, it seems, a differing opinion from a lot of you!
No offence intended with any "demented geordie", "pitch fork" or "sheep" comments, just found it an easy way to explain how I saw some comments here.

Callumbus, interesting point, didn't realise we had reach the end of the loans deadline. Betting is MM will do nothing, good point to bring in a defender, one that can clear from dead ball attempts would be a good asset.
With Corr out for the rest of the season a goal scoring replacement for him would be welcome. But like the car with a punctured spare we will probably carry on hoping one or more of the other tyres (cox, sturrock, Paynter and Peacock) doesn't blow out.

OTR - Yes i'm afraid it's no more loans available from tomorrow. I also don't think anything will be done but do think that a reliable defender is a must - not just for the rest of this season but for the future. I'm less concerned about the forwards (despite the injury to Corr - how can we miss what little we've seem of him anyway?). I go with Brian Clough's philosophy - get the defence right first!! Where the central forwards are concerned I think what we have are adequate when compared to the defence.

Agreed, this loan window closure has come up without as much as a whimper.
Would like to see a reinforcement or two tbh.
Another McNamee wouldn't go a miss!

He does look promising but I'd be wary of pairing him with either Ifil or Aljofrey.

Lazaat, I'll go with the draw!! Just for clarity I am in no way connected with the Malpas family whatsoever, I'm just a town fan with, it seems, a differing opinion from a lot of you! Let`s talk next season for a moment ! Sales of season tickets soared last July when the Town`s future under Wisey looked so good. Who can predict any excitement in the next season ? Oh I nearly forgot MALPAS OUT !

Again AF must take this into account I think, and get someone else in who is a recognised established player/manager who can spark some enthusiasm in not only the team, but the supporters as well. As it stands at present I can for see a large drop in sales

Hope was all we had and look how they turned out. Back to basics its a 3 year plan if you want to go support the Scum or the Arse etc for a season that is your choice , I would rather keep putting my funds into this club in the belief we will come good , only 6 months ago some of these posters would have put money in to keep the club afloat and had you succeeded what manager would have filled the position under those circumstances ?but now you won't even buy a ticket to watch them ,just about sums it up . And don't kid yourself the same postings don't get posted onto other sites everyone wants to be top of the Prem in reality only a few can achieve that , we have to keep the faith to realise that dream . Keep the Red flag flying High .

First and foremost the players should be playing for there futures and the club and fans every week, not just these next 7 games.
I just hope we manage a few wins and finish mid table.
Ref barry Corr sad for the player, however the clb knew of his injury record at previous clubs, so why did we take him on?
As to MM he aint the guy for our club(unless he puts 7 wins together, cannot understand his team selections at all.
I hope we get something out of Fridays game, it will be a tough one.
I am so amazed at the current situation , before MM took the job we were 8th talking about play-offfs now we are sliding down the table quick. I do hope AF satctions another loanee before the deadline, as normal will be listening in on Internet good luck Reds[bold]bold[/bold]

I have read the comments today, and again we seem to comment on the lack of organisation in the first team. We comment on the lack of enthusiasm the players are showing, which we can only attributed to the management team.
The silence of the fans at home games has been apparent almost since MM's appointment, and has seen gates drop in recent weeks (Leeds being the obvious exception). However, how come the adver has shown no interest in commenting on any of this, or the board in responding to the quite obvious unrest from fans?
I think that TJ is right, we need to worry about next season too, is there going to be anything to attract the new supporters when long termers seem so dissenchanted with Malpas?

This team is capable of beating any team in this league home or away. Malpas is suppose to be a coach, get the team practicing passing the ball, our passing on sat was appalling. Macari would have them down the nearest army camp all week.

Sorry Mr Fitton I won't be renewing my season Ticket next year if the undertaker is still at the club . If you want to buy my shares also please contact me.
This is the worst rubbish since Ken Beamish was manager.
