FULL TIME: Town 0 Southend 1
BARRY Corr looks set for another long spell on the sidelines after injury forced him off late in a dire Town display at the County Ground.
The boos rang out around the home fans as a mis-firing Town lost to Southend 1-0 at half, courtesy of Simon Francis' deserved 19th-minute opener.
Corr was making his first start since early February but on 45 minutes looked to have suffered a relapse of the shoulder injury that has kept him out.
The Irish striker had replaced Blair Sturrock in attack alongside Simon Cox while boss Maurice Malpas otherwise named an unchanged side from Saturday's defeat at Brighton.
Midfielder Lee Peacock returned to the substitutes bench after serving a three-match suspension while Jamie Vincent, Michael Pook and Chris Allen are still out after injury.
Just a solitary win from their last eight matches will be a concern to Malpas but the Scot remains confident his side can start climbing the table.
Town fans hoping for a quick start to the game to help them forget about the bitter cold were sadly disappointed as the hosts started in Doctor Jekyll mode.
The returning Corr almost headed Malpas's men ahead on just three minutes, heading Craig Easton's cross straight at goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan, but from there Southend took control.
The visitors dominated possession in the middle and got their rewards on 19 minutes when Simon Francis cut in from the right and drilled a shot into the top of the net from 20 yards, via a Hasney Aljofree deflection.
Jon- Paul McGovern's strike just past the right hand post from 25-yards gave the sombre home fans a rare moment to shout about just six minutes later but in all honesty it was another half hour to forget from an increasingly inconsistent Town side.
Corr was at least one bright spark in an early toothless home display, dominating aerially and holding the ball up well, but he should have scored on 31 minutes when he headed Michael Timlin's right-wing corner wide from just six yards.
The injury-plagued Irishman was then replaced by former Southend player Billy Paynter on 45 minutes after landing heavily on his arm while defending a free kick.
Looking to toughen his midfield up, Malpas introduced Peacock to the action at half time in place of Timlin, with McGovern restored to the right wing and Easton moved back inside.
But the early signs were again far from encouraging with Southend looking dangerous on the break and Town struggling to create any chances of note.
The hosts should have been level against the run of play on 55 minutes though. McNamee cut inside from the left and flashed a shot across the face of goal that just missed the waiting Simon Cox yards out from goal.
Southend were furious just minutes later though when referee Mr Shoebridge seemed to miss a blatant handball from Jerel Ifil at the far post, after Mark Gower's free kick had caught out Town's defence.
It was almost game over for Malpas' men around the 65-minute mark when first Alan McCormack blazed over after a mistake by Peacock and then Peter Brezovan brilliantly denied James Walker, with the striker clean through on goal.
Malpas made his last throw of the dice on 70 minutes, Sofiene Zaaboub coming on for McGovern to boos after his reserve team bust-up with Dave Byrne last week.
Southend continued to look the more likely to score though with Brezovan again being called into action on 73 minutes, saving Lee Barnard's close-range effort after another Ifil error.
Paynter could have salvaged a point with two chances just after the 80-minute mark.
First he saw a close-range effort briliantly cleared off the line by Peter Clarke, then he fired over from yards out after good work by Cox.
Peacock could have snatched an undeserved point in the dying seconds, just missing Zaaboub's low cross.

I'm a self admitted 'give Malpas a chance' man a month or so ago, but i'm afraid my patience has worn out, i've listened to enough post match interviews to know the man has no passion for the club at the very least, this is the first time this season we've had a negative goal difference, it's no surprise that has come after just 3 months in charge. I defy anyone to post a comment saying he should be given until christmas!! let him know he'll be booted out in the summer, maybe he'll start showing his worth to a conference north side like Boston.

Malpas arrives and we're in a great position with no need to change anything apart from keep motivating the players and the results would have come!!!!
T==ser comes in and makes changes where not needed and now we have no confidence and can't even kick a ball, sad but true!
no inspiration, lack of motivation self belief and worst of all no confidence!!!

Another pretty feckless display from which McNamee is the only one to emerge with any effort points. Just as at Brighton. At least I I didn't have so far to drive home.

Why didn't Nicholas get a game at left back? He's good in the air (would help defend set pieces) and is better than Smith, and would allow our best right back (Commingues) to play in position. Also his long throw gets us out of trouble, the amount of times we went backwards or lost the ball from a throw-in today was incredible!

Jeeez on current form Malpas must be about the worst Swindon manager ever! What a nightmare, could only happen to Swindon. Great stuff that we were saved from the clutches of the greedy Greek by Mr. Fitton but why on earth did he appoint someone with such a lousy managerial track record as Maurice Malpas? It was a big risk that's backfired. Time to admit your mistake AF and do so something about it NOW before it's too late. Otherwise we could be playing league 2 football again next season. Malpas has to go!!!!

It seems to me that AF has given the job to the bloke who didn't ask what the transfer kitty was at his interview. He stated he wont throw money at the club and Uncle Fester was the only one who said ok. Thats why he's the manager and thats why it wont change. Because anyone else will wont to know what budget they have .Fester is happy to sit there take his money and not bother the chairman for cash to change things

Its a crying shame that MM has turned a group of reasonable players that with a bit of tinkering with could have made the play offs into what they were today-a bunch that cant string two passes together. dont know where they should be on the pitch.,made ifil into a nervous wreck.and left the fans to go home wondering if we will ever score again, let alone win a match, Its agood job under Sturrock that we got enough points thatmeans we will stay up, but only just.HELP AGAIN MR FITTON!!!! You know what has to be done.

Malpas will get us nothing but relegation. There are no easy points now and we need at least 4 points to stay up. It should not have been like this, the script after AF saved the club was to get a manager with experience and get into the playoffs. I believe we have good players that lack confidence and are under performing. Malpas is to blame. That is not being negative it is just the facts. Malpas out.

One of my concerns if MM stays on - is if he is given a budget what the hell is going to bring in - he inspires little confidence all round. He has not gelled at all with the supporters from day one and has done very little to improve this. The pressure must tell eventually, and Mr Fitton has to make a big decision here to back him or sack him.
It would not be knee jerk reaction as this has been bubbling for weeks -

i 4 one dont think malpas is up 2 the job since he's took over he had a team in gd form with the playoffs in sight now 2 months down the line were looking at relegation. i think town will survive just only because 2 out of the bottom 4 have had pts deducted other wise we would be in the s**t. malpas out.

Sorry, but he's either another Migs - good but made of eggshells, in which case sell him now, or the medical advice we are getting is from Dr Nick Riviera from the Simpsons, in which case sack the medics.

I have wondering whats gone wrong with STFC.
Before AF came along and saved STFC we were playing, like our livelyhood depended on a good performance, just in case the takeover did not happen. Now all is i place and the players are getting paid every month on the dot. So the situation has now changed and they know there not going to get the sack or have to find a new club till the end of the season.
The point being that places i have worked have had temps in and they work really hard to get noticed, and to get a full time job. So, what happens, they get he job they were after and treat the company (that has given them a lifeline), with contempt. Is the same thing happening at STFC????
I don't think that MM is really up to the job and AF must have grave concerns about his ability to motivate the players. We are still not safe from relegation yet, only 9 points above safety, when not too long ago we were only 5 points of a playoff place. I think he should get them all together and tell them exactly who is paying the everyone's wages and remind them of the reason why he bought the club. It was promotion, though maybee he was not expecting it this year. Still, he must be dissapointed
I would like think that we will be safe this year, and if, this time next year we are in the relegation zone then any new manager will have his work cut out to save us. Just hope that AF sees the warning bells early.

Once that whistle blows there are 11 players who have the responsibility for the match result. Apart from Brez the other 10 should not have the gall to pick up their wages. Malpas may not be the right man for the job but even Alex Ferguson would have trouble motivation this lot of plodders

as a semi-retired project manager I would use a SWAT analysis to measure Malpas's performance. SWAT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats.
Well his strengths are limited to having the support of the board. His Weaknesses are numerous. Poor communication skills (media and players). poor tactician. poor motivator, poor man management, poor discipline skills,no contacts within the football world.
Opportunities, first one would be for the board to bring in a Director of football, this would eliminate malpas with his lack of contacts because someone else with the right skills would be making the decisions. My choice would be Lou Macari, he does not want the responsibility with day to day management, but with his contacts and eye for potential he would do a great job for us. Second opportunity would be to replace Malpas as coach or manager, my choice would be Paul Trollope, local boy made good as a player with Derby and with Rovers as coach, he is proven a good motivator who would get the present unfit bunch to actually play for 90 minutes. A strong dose of the Macari fitness regiem is needed to keep them fit all season.
Threats, well without the points accummalated earlier in the season we would now be facing relegation, the threat is AF keeps Malpas in place too long, then the opportunity to gain promotion next seasonw will be lost. The only reason I see AF acting sooner than later is loss of revenue. He must already understand the wasted opportunity in the cup and the drop in gates has already cost him £2 million in revenue. If malpas is still here in August the sale of season tickets will also drop and then I'm sure he will take action.
I cannot see one reason for the "give him a chance" brigade to defend this so called manage who came on AF's promise od a proven track record. His only record was at Motherwell, play 17 won 1. At the rate we are going he may well leave Swindon with a similar record.

Its not looking good, In the lower leagues you have to be inspirational character and tactically sound to manage a football club, with some great contacts to bring in the right players, the days of King and Wise and Sturrock who know the game inside out and have mountains of contacts and are the kind of managers and characters who can give you a shot of getting out this league with little or no money. MM has little track record, talk of we played well but lost doesn’t cut it, when you play bad and win you know your team is tough, motivated, and fights and wins every 40/60 ball. this kind of leadership comes from the manager. We are more than on the slide, only a few wins under MM with many many losses, teams that finish the season weak, are often the ones relegated the following year. Fortunately for us, the Gills won’t muster the points to put us down this year. Mr M what is your plan to stop the slide. !!? what are you going to do to turn us into a fighting winning machine. ? we want our Swindon back.

I really do hope that Andy Fitton is sensible enough to take no notice of the numpties who post on this site.
It's a game of opinions but some people who resort to "GET BACK TO SCOTLAND" need to be ignored. It's not the middle ages people, get a grip.
Good luck to MM, personally I've enjoyed the football that was on display against Hudders, LO, and Carlisle. I for one realise it's not going to be an over night thing, turning the playing side around.

Impressive, out of around TWENTY games in charge you've personally enjoyed 3 of them, at that rate Malpas will have to be in charge for 15 years before you enjoy a whole season, good luck with that!

I don't know what your on Janaage, but I suggest you lie down before you fall over. If you think it's fun to see our team continue to get whacked with soft goals by mediocre sides, if you think it's a good display seeing a bunch of misfits unable to put a ball in the net every Saturday for 2 months, then take your funny farm glasses and go and watch Oxford in the Blue Square league, Im sure you'll see what you consider a fun game. Personally I want to be watching Swindon take on Wolves, Charlton and other Championship sides not the crap we have to watch now.The only way that will happen is when we have a defence that doesn't leak goals, forwards that score goals and led by a manager who know's how to make them do it.

Oddly there are no pro Malpas posts here tonight.
Maybe even the "give him time " brigade can now see how dire he is.
I'm not going to rant on about the performance , confidence or want to win, I've said it all too often before .
I've also said this before "MALPAS OUT" and I'll keep saying it til he's gone .
MALPAS OUT!!!!!!!!!

I'm quite confident that a business man like Andrew Fitton isn't going to listen to the likes of you (or me). I hope MM is given the appropriate time to bring in more players like MacNamee, and bring in his own coaching team, then with a bit of luck the results will turn.

Wow today we were thrashed 1-0 to a play off positioned side - what a disgrace eh?
If it wasn't for Paynter and Peacock not being able to take their chances in the last 10 minutes we'd have come away with a point.
What a disaster!!!! Some people need to get a grip of reality.
Sturrock wasn't getting us play like Brazil, and MM not only has inherited Sturrock's squad, he's also got the cast offs of his managerial team too.
Give the bloke a break.
Nice to see the "insult" posts start too, just because I have a differing opinion, how very mature of you.

RussSTFC, well aware that Lou works for MUTV and has commitments as a TV pundit, these are part time positions and if a possibility of Director of a forward looking team like Swindon came along, maybe he would consider it. My thoughts with Paul Trollope is only as coach, not the person to bring in the right players. Didn't know Lennie Lawrence was at Rovers, but he has a very good CV, if Lou wasn't available maybe we can take both of them. Point being who ever we bring in the future needs to have the right skills and proven track record to take Swindon forward and the people mentioned are an example of the type of calibar we should be looking at.

Unfortunately I think we're stuck with Malpas. He said all the right things at the interview,ie I don't need to spend any money.I beleive that Andrew Fitton with all the best intentions put together a consortium to rescue us.His intentions maybe honourable but are his backers there just to pick the bones out of the club? why else would someone with 700 million pounds not want a seat on the board and others try to remain annonymous. No I'm afraid we won't see any of them rushing to put their hands in their pockets, this has been my opinion ever since Malpas was unvailed as the much heralded "EXPERIENCED" manager that we were promised.I said from the honset that I was
hoping that I would be proved wrong, and I'm still waiting and hoping to be!

funny really thought I would miss watching Swindon play (30 yr vet) when we were gonna go bust. Now MM has taken over I feel we have reached a new low.............even Andy King inspired me more than the current manager. It is the same team in essence....only difference is MM has no team spirit and has lost the squad (weeks ago...........day two I suspect).
Please AF win me back and get a decent manager not a coach.......we need somenone who can rally players not someone who can teach a centre back how far they can hoof it.
Well that's something we agree on, I don't want the board listen to the MOB (Malpas out brigade) and I don't want him to listen to me.
I want them to way up all the options and take it from there. I personally hope they give Malpas a lot longer, as I think he'd turn it around given time. The amount of chances we've had in recent games we should have bagged a lot more points.
You can't really blame the manager for misses like Cox's at LO, Cox's v leeds, Paynter/Peacock today, can you?
