Stand to remember Town hero Don

DON Rogers' legendary status at the County Ground will be immortalised after Town revealed the south stand would be renamed in his honour.

Town chiefs have revealed Swindon's most famous sporting son is also to take up an ambassador's role at the club as they look to re-connect with the heart of the community.

From next season the Kingswood Stand will be called the Don Rogers Stand, with Town, who travel to Brighton today (3pm), determined to pay tribute to the man who contributed to the most famous moment in the club's history.

Rogers scored two extra-time goals in 1969 to see then Third Division Town beat Arsenal to lift the League Cup, in one of the greatest shocks ever, and his efforts are finally to be recognised.

Town chief executive Nick Watkins said: "We want Swindon Town to be at the heart of the community. To the new directors, to Andrew Fitton and Jeremy Wray, Don Rogers is at the heart of the community and is very much a legend within Swindon Town's history.

"Next year is the 40th anniversary of the League Cup win and it seemed very appropriate to begin the process of that celebratory year to name the South Stand the Don Rogers stand.

"I am so delighted he feels confident enough in the new regime to be associated with us and we have talked to Don beyond the naming of the stand.

"We want him to hold an ambassadorial role within the club to a level we can use his relationships and use the respect he has to the good of everyone."

Rogers said: "It was a very nice surprise and a really big honour.''

Totally agree with STFC4E, Don deserves this and more for his loyalty and the fact he was such a fantastic player.

All well and good but I won't be happy until the North Stand is renamed 'The Chalkie White Stand' in recognition of a PROPER legend.

And about bloody time. Well done THE DON. STFC have never treated their ex-players and stars with any reverance, this is a fantastic start. Well done to the new regime on this too.

Great move for STFC, Mr Don Rogers the legend watched by generations’ gone way back in the days, in those old wooden stands imported in from Aldershot. I was 5 and upwards, watching Mr Rogers turn teams inside out with his speed and magic, class player compared to this modern day, many clubs wanted his signature and he was at our club. A fitting honour for Swindon Town. About time, to bring back the heart of our club and history and memories of past and to create the future of times to come and yet to see. Great move by new owners and board, they see the vision of our future...

Well done the Board
This is one of the best things to happen since the takeover
I am sure the move will help the club reconnect with the community
Now we need the John Trollope Town End and the Joe Butler bank

Well overdue this . I actually wrote to the old regime suggesting this and also requesting recognition for our illustrious captain that famous season, the late , great Stan Harland. "The Don " scored the goals and excited the crowd but Stan was truly motivational and held the team together.
So c'mon Mr Fitton take this one step further and recognise our Stanley please.

carry on like that tractorboy and you will have every seat in the stands named after former players and the urinals named after rikki hunt

This is brilliant news. The nice thing about Don Rogers is he's still local and thisn is a fitting tribute to probably our most exciting player ever.
I do agree about the Town End being named after "Mr Swindon Town" Jon Trollope, specially after the way McMahon and cronies shafted him.

Agree John Trollope should be recognised ,after all he does hold a record that will never be beaten in modern day football where parasetic players are only concerned with becoming multi millionares without loyalty.
No one in the modern game will play over 800 league games for one club (sorry can't remember the exact number) Even Giggsy at Man U won't manage that.
Yes give Trollope MBE the Stratton bank and Harland the Town End .
