Roberts vows to be back

CHRISTIAN Roberts has vowed to return to the County Ground fitter and stronger than ever' after banishing serious fears for his future to the back of his mind.

Town's Welshman admits his career is in the balance after it was confirmed knee surgery is needed but is determined to prove the doubters wrong by gracing the County Ground flanks once more.

Roberts, pictured, will be rushed into a London hospital on Tuesday for immediate surgery, after a micro fracture on his right knee was diagnosed by a Harley Street specialist yesterday morning.

He knows a long road to recovery lies ahead but is refusing to consider letting the injury beat him for good as he already plots his return to the top of his game.

With any comeback not expected until well into next season, at best, Roberts admits he has struggled to get his head round the news, but believes he has the resilience to emerge stronger for the experience.

He said: "It is a long road back. It is like wherever to Vegas but I cannot look on the negative side.

"I have to be positive and I have to believe I will be back.

"I have got confidence I will be back stronger than ever. The injury has beaten me.

"I have been fighting it for months but it has killed my game and I need to get it sorted.

"I have every faith in my surgeon though. He thinks I will come back from this and I think that too.

"It is a shock going in as early as Tuesday but I suppose the sooner I go in the sooner I can start my rehabilitation."

Roberts, 28, who has already undergone surgery to have his knee cleaned out this season, admits he was not so positive moments after the need for an operation was confirmed.

"Of course all sorts of things flash through your mind," he said. "I guess you would have to say my career is uncertain now and that was my immediate reaction.

"It is scary and very nerve-wracking because this is a big operation. But I know people come back from things like that, in fact they come back from worse.

"I have to get my head round this and show my mental toughness. Like I said it is a long way back but I am ready for it."

What's that then -clicking into action and sparkling once in a blue moon -fading and disappearing from view all to often?

Good luck Roberts

Best to look for a fresh start with another club though when you are better
