Swindon Town 3 - Huddersfield 2

A CRAIG Easton double helped nine-man Town revive their play-off push but not before an explosive and controversial second half.p>

The midfielder struck twice after Billy Paynter had gven the hosts a deserved early lead to hand Town a comfortable 3-1 half time advantage.

Two second half sending offs for the hosts though, for Lee Peacock and Billy Paynter, saw the visitors peg Town back to 3-2, with their second penalty of the game, but they held on in an anxious last few minutes.

Referee Ray Lee was jeered off at the final whistle after a second half which saw him lose control.

Jack Smith was a last-minute inclusion in tonight's Town side, with Jamie Vincent being withdrawn after feeling his groin injury in the warm up.

Smith lined up at right back, with Miguel Comminges switched to the left, while Sofiene Zaaboub came into the squad and onto the bench.

Maurice Malpas has again tinkered with his wingers as Town look to revive their play-off bid in tonight's home clash with Huddersfield.

Anthony McNamee will start on the left wing, with Christian Roberts dropping down to the substitutes bench, while Craig Easton will continue on the right side of midfield.

Town were given the ideal start within five minutes, with Billy Paynter grabbing his ninth of the season.

McNamee's clever ball down the left sent Simon Cox clear and his cross was flicked home by the former Port Vale man.

Huddersfield hit back though and almost levelled on 14 minutes. Phil Smith punched Frank Sinclair's long throw clear but Andy Holdsworth's looping header sailed over him and was cleared off the line by Lee Peacock.

McNamee was making the most of his start and a mazy run past Sinclair ended in a deep cross towards Cox, but the striker could only volley wide from an angle on 20 minutes.

The former Watford man ghosted past Sinclair again just two minutes later and a replica deep cross was this time volleyed home at the far post by Craig Easton to double Town's lead.

Chris Brandon then volleyed wide after Smith's punch fell to him on the edge of the area on 27 minutes.

Smith two minutes later bravely denied Huddersfield a route back into the game, diving at the on-rushing Michael Collins' feet when he had been sent clear on goal.

Town were 3-0 ahead on 31 minutes, with Easton grabbing his second of the game. Cox held up Smith's long clearance, laid the ball off to Paynter and his square pass to the right was fired into the net by Easton, via a big Robbie Williams deflection.

The visitors were controversially handed a lifeline when referee Mr Lee pointed to the penalty spot after Collins went down under the challenge of Lee Peacock and Comminges. Phil Jevons cooly slotted home the spot kick on 39 minutes.

Chris Allen saw a rasping drive from 20-yards tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Matt Glennon in the dying seconds of the half.

Sinclair should have scored on 53 minutes when he headed wide from eight yards after Williams' right wing corner found him unmarked.

A quiet second half was suddenly brought to life on the hour mark when Lee Peacock was sent off for a late tackle on Malvin Kamara. The midfielder and Town fans were stunned by the decision..

Town boss Maurice Malpas immediately withdrew Simon Cox for Jon-Paul McGovern as he looked to bolster the midfield in Peacock's absence.

Huddersfield piled forward looking for a way back into the game but, to Town's credit, Smith's goal remained relatively untroubled.

It was the hosts who almost scored the next goal, McNamee seeing an audacious 35-yard lob well held by Glennon on 70 minutes.

Referee Ray Lee incensed the home faithful further on 75 minutes when he sent Paynter off for handball on the line and awarded Huddersfield another penalty. To be fair this time he had no choice, with Andy Booth's goalbound header punched off the line, and Jevons converted the spot kick.

Luke Beckett was then fortunate to escape a red card of his own, after his elbow connected with Jack Smith.

Phil Smith produced a brilliant tip over with six minutes remaining from Booth's header as nine-man Town valiantly held on.

Huddersfield even pushed goalkeeper Glennon up for a late corner in the dying seconds but they were unable to secure a point.

YOU REDS!! Sounded like a deserved 3 points, Smith can't be blamed for conceding 2 penalties but his 4 game average still stands at 2 per game, for God sake bring back Brez! Lampard straight red card on Saturday afternoon, overturned by Monday night, anyone else believe the FA will even bother to watch the replay of Peacocks sending off? I for one very much doubt it! Two games two incredibly poor referees. On the subject of the FA will they do anything about the Leeds keeper on Saturday inciting the Town End at the final whistle then throwing a missile back into the crowd, I saw the ref in the center circle watching him do it, wonder if he was paid enough not to include it in his match report.

Posted by: HRH, swindon on 10:24pm Tue 4 Mar 08
I can't understand why Brez has been frozen out of the team. He's by far the best keeper we have. If i were a betting man i'd say we've already done a deal to sell him on at the end of the season. Question is - will he be going to Spurs or Newcastle?
Posted by: Russ STFC, swindon on 10:26pm Tue 4 Mar 08
ref was a diabolical, ashikodi was a lazy **** fair play to malpas hauling him off now send him back where he came from, brilliant save near the end by smith.and McNAmee pat yourself on the back son you was outstanding what difference a winger made with some pace.well done to all the lads bar ashikodi.

at last we saw some fire in their bellys and passion was in abundance 9 men against 12

sorry hodgsol! i have to disagree! crap kicking/punching and cannot catch! did you not see all the flapping and dropping!
and if he was doing his job properly and positioned himself correctly then he would have saved the shot billy had to tip over the bar! therefore saving a goal and red card!!

Thank god that we have not signed Ashikodi on a permanent deal all he did was stroll around the pitch no effort at all. what a waste of space. It was like playing with 8 men with him on the pitch.

Some ppl are never happy we won for christ sake and the performance was miles better then saturday did you not see smith make that superb save when he tipped it over the bar or that punch that cleared the penalty area,or even that 1 on 1 where he could have got badly injured, get off his back and give praise when its due i admit his kicking wasn't great but he done ok .The goals against him was penalties not his fault.you want to have a go at a player then take it out on ashikodi who wont chase nothing. How many of you think he really wants to be here.

Here we go again with you 1969. You weren't even there so don't go spouting off your usual diatribe of excrement about the manager. In fact I don't believe you ever go to a match, you just love to complain on line as you are one of the 30 or 40 that post on here with nothing useful to say. Stay away from the CG and off these pages please !!

Yes, we WON with 9 players and a naff ref! We need to keep momentum going now and climb up the table.Malpas looking to bring in some players on loan I understand, that can only be a good thing,at least we have stopped the slide!COME ON YOU REDS!

Marvellous game! Useless ref, 3-0 up with the quality that would have seen us stuff Leeds, dodgy pen, 2 sendings off and 3 points.

Only 4800 to see it though. So to all those that didn't come - hahahahahaha, you missed the most entertaining game in months!

How can anyone say the Phil Smith had a good game he was crap!!! Yes he made a good save at the end but that was about it. He dropped everything he attempted to catch he punched the ball like a pansy. Huddersfield should of scored twice in the first half from Smith weak punches which went straight to one of there players IN THE BOX. The 2nd goal was his fault if he didn't flap at the ball and mess up paynter wouldn't of had to do handball it and get sent off. Smith must be MM bumboy as if he keeps his place next tuesday there's something wrong!!!!! BRING BACK BREZ!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that was a game of two halves , little McNamee tied Sinclair in knots first half . I can't say I have ever been a big fan of Peacock runs a lot but to what end ?, eventually his frustration got the better of him and ther was no doubt it was a straight red .I am also a fan of Phil Smith and believe he deserves his chance but oh dear his command of his area leaves everyone in front of him in doubt and it was from this indeciseveness the second goal came about (In my opinion), Phil also punches where big Brez simply snatches the ball off of the forwards head and as for Ashikodi a proffessional athlete surely that must show on the training ground . One thing for sure Martin Ling certainly left with a big smile on his face , no Peacock no Paynter for him to worry about next Tuesday . Gotta hand it to Huddersfield though they played to feet and did'nt give up .
We certainly get our monies worth don't we .

I've been sticking up for smith on here of late, but I have to admit he was a bit shakey tonight.

Yes he did make some good saves, but his handling looked a bit dodgy at times and his kicking has been poor for the last 2 games. he just looked a bit nervous, which is unusual for him.

If we are talking about people getting into the team on merit then I think Brez deserves another go next game.
Posted by: angry monkey, Swindon on 9:38am Wed 5 Mar 08
Also I cant believe people STILL trying to slate MM!

We were clearly the better side 1st half. The ref and a few moments of madness from our players evened things up

I agree with you! We played the best stuff for months in the first half an hour and McNamee was outstanding. We attacked with speed and purpose. The lads deserve great credit for a battling performance in the second half under difficult circumstances. Can't belive some of the rubbish written by others on this site who call themselves fans but didn't bother to go. I thought Jack Smith had a solid game and was pleased to see him back. Cominges proved he is versatileand can play anywhere. To those who stayed away, you missed a really entertaining game.

I can, some have already pre-judged him so no matter what MM does, anti-MM fans will continue to drone on & on about it - it's like a stuck record.

A good performance last night, ruined by the imbecile in charge who surely must be contender for worst ref of the season along with Rob Styles. It made for great entertainment though I suppose, but it was a well deserved win.

Cimon mate, Paynter never HAD tyo handle the ball. It must have been instinct to do it, but the ball was heading into the goal (no matter who was to blame) and there was no need to give away the penalty and get sent off. He knows the rules - he (and we) paid the penalty (excuse the pun). We would still have taken the points with 10 men, so get over it!! Talking about bumboys - assume you have tried it then !!

Well Hertz, i think easton back to the middle in peacock's place and how about Comminges bombing up and down with Smith right back and Vincent back if fit. If Vincent unfit then as you were at the back and McGovern wide mid. Is Corr fit? If not then Sturrock is a **** site quicker than Moses and will work hard. Or, if he happens to be in the mood, then Robbo up front but at least with Sturrock you are guaranteed effort. There. Time to go home....

well it was a win thats what counts id like to see roberts in the middle and be told to get the ball and run down the wing and fire it into the box not to try and take on the whole team just to do that i think we need someone in the middle with quick feet as last night it was like the ball was a hot spud it was a case of just kicking it down feild as quick as poss i no people will say thats not he,s place to play but m/m who no.s he may play him in goal you really don,t no do we lets just keep winning as it feel.s good and im not throwing my betting slip.s away just yet £20 at 16/1 to go up never say never .gaz town end
