4:55pm Saturday 18th August 2012 in nPower League 2 News By Sam Morshead
TOMMY Miller missed a second-half penalty as Swindon Town drew 0-0 at Hartlepool on the first day of the League One campaign.
Miller had the chance to claim all three points for Town, against his first professional club, with 20 minutes remaining of the contest but blasted over from 12 yards after a Hartlepool defender had handled inside the box.
Both sides enjoyed several chances in front of goal without finding a breakthrough in the first half, with Matt Ritchie seeing his point-blank header saved by Scott Flinders in the Pools goal and Wes Foderingham stopping Steve Howard’s long-range piledriver.
After the break Town had to absorb a long spell of Hartlepool pressure, with Howard heading against a post, before making inroads of their own but the match ended goalless.
Here are the key moments from today’s match:
One min: A long ball from Joe Devera gets caught up in the wind a little and causes a moment of panic in the Hartlepool defence.
Andy Williams controls the ball neatly on his chest and lets fly from 20 yards, but it is easy for Hartlepool keeper Scott Flinders.
Two mins: The Pools defence allows Williams space down the right, he delivers to the back post where Raffa De Vita nods the ball into the path of Tommy Miller but the former Hartlepool man’s volley is comfortably saved by Flinders.
Four mins: Town go close again. Matt Ritchie is flattened on the right wing and he sends the resultant free-kick fizzing at head height across the six-yard line.
Paul Benson rises to meet it but his flicked header drifts narrowly wide.
11 mins: Wes Foderingham is given a difficult back pass to deal with by Jay McEveley and, under pressure from Steve Howard, he kicks straight to Anthony Sweeney but the Hartlepool man’s 35-yard effort is tame and allow Foderingham to recover and save.
14 mins: Andy Monkhouse is in acres of space at the back post when Jonathan Franks chips a delicate ball across the ball, but the former Swindon man cannot control the ball and McEveley steals in to clear Heart-in-mouth moment for the travelling Town faithful behind Foderingham’s goal.
17 mins: A golden chance goes begging for the visitors as Raffa De Vita picks out Ritchie at the back post but his header is saved at point-blank range by Flinders.
21 mins: Franks' first-time effort from the edge of the area goes flying over the stand housing the Town fans.
23 mins: Hartlepool really start to get a stranglehold on the game and James Poole should do better than nod his free header over the bar from 12 yards when picked out by Franks.
25 mins: Again the hosts have a sight of goal as Howard benefits after Tommy Miller is robbed of possession in the middle of the park.
Howard drills at goal from distance but it’s straight at Foderingham, who can make an easy save.
27 mins: Town finally string together a semi-meaningful passage of play and it ends with a chance in front of goal.
McEveley crosses from the left but the ball is behind Ritchie, who cannot get any purchase on his shot which bobbles into the arms of Flinders.
34 mins: Town are making a habit of messing around with possession in their own half and again they gift their opponents a shot at goal.
Joe Devera’s pass to Alan Navarro is well off-target and the ball breaks to Poole whose 30-yard chip, with Foderingham off his line, drifts over the crossbar.
51 mins: Sweeney nods Evan Horwood’s free-kick well over the crossbar as Hartlepool start the second half as they finished the first.
57 mins: Swindon continue to look a little fragile at the back and Howard rattles Foderingham’s left-hand post with a header from Horwood’s free-kick.
68 mins: Town are living on the edge at Victoria Park and, when Foderingham miscues his clearance, Monkhouse has the chance to shoot from 25 yards.
Luckily for the away side, the ball fizzes into the stand.
69 mins: On a rare foray forward, Town are denied a golden chance by Hartlepool defender Sam Collins who heads Ritchie’s dangerous cross clear from underneath his own crossbar with Williams lurking.
71 mins: Of all the storylines that could have presented themselves today - Tommy Miller, playing against his first professional club, has the chance to score for Swindon from the penalty spot after the referee spots a handball inside the Pools box.
He’s known for his prowess from 12 yards but this time he blazes over. Huge opportunity goes begging for the visitors.
76 mins: James Collins, on as a substitute should do better when Luke Rooney’s deflected effort ricochets into his path but he can’t connect on the spin.
77 mins: Collins has an even better chance after Williams dances through the Pools back four but he volleys well wide from 15 yards.
85 mins: Devera breaks into the penalty area down the right and after his initial cross bounces back to him, he heads dangerously across goal. Flinders pushes the ball towards the penalty spot and it is hacked clear.
90 mins: Williams shows extraordinary levels of fitness to chase down a lost cause on the right flank, cut inside and shoot but his left-footed effort is easily saved by Flinders at his near post.
SWINDON TOWN: Wes Foderingham; Joe Devera, Alan McCormack, Troy Archibald-Henville, Jay McEveley; Matt Ritchie, Tommy Miller, Alan Navarro (Simon Ferry, 59), Raffa De Vita (Luke Rooney, 55); Andy Williams, Paul Benson (James Collins, 68)
Substitutes not used: Leigh Bedwell, Nathan Thompson , Aden Flint, Oliver Risser
HARTLEPOOL: Scott Flinders, Neil Austin, Sam Collins, Peter Hartley (Jack Baldwin, 90), Evan Horwood, Jonathan Franks, Simon Walton, Anthony Sweeney, Andy Monkhouse, James Poole (Luke James, 78), Steve Howard.
Substitutes not used: Ritchie Humphreys, Darren Holden, Paul Murray, Colin Nish.

I wasn't there and will wait to hear what those who were have to say. But I was hoping we would have improved on our away form from last season, but it appears the cracks are still there with this disappointing result.
If we continue to try and outplay home teams with a 4-4-2 line up, I think we may struggle to match them in the middle of the park. I'm sure Paolo has a plan B but do we have the players to play it. Time will tell after all it is only the first game and at least we didn't lose.
Looking forward to Tuesday, expect changes, hope Roberts, Ferry and Caddis will be back in contension.

As for Pdc just wish he would sort this out with Caddis,I heard caddis on Radio and he sounded really p---ed off and who can blame him.
Now pdc would not talk to the media,as a pst said this is STFC notPdc FC
time he realised how to treat men.
Look at last season whe he dropped several 1st teamers mmmmmmm
Yes you either love him or hate him.
My feeling is at times he seems to lose his way.
As to audio on game I gave up last season as was waste of time service was crap
Note this aint just a dig at Pdc it's just that this falling out with key players needs to get sorted ASAP

i did want to see caddis back today, but i think it's unfair to say the decision to leave him out cost us 3 points as some of the above posters have said... there was an adver article before the season saying that miller had scored 33 out of 34 career penalties and there is no guarantee that caddis would have scored it... typical that he misses for us!
i'm reasonably happy with the clean sheet and the point from today...

Thankfully we now have a manager who wont ever settle for anything below par.
Like your post Mallorca. Pdc is fascinating and certainly brings life and controversy to the club but, like you, I find aspects of his behaviour distasteful at times. Not talking after this draw is seemingly childish for a man who frequently reminds us of his intelligence and his all or nothing man management does not suit every circumstance. That said I am robins all the way and always will be but this is the forum to express a legitimate opinion.

Penalty was a bad one at least a few feet over the bar. You should at least hit the target.
Despite not taking the chances and the final ball was bad we looked good in spells. Need Roberts and Caddis in my opinion and today both players would have given just that little bit more. Ferry replaced Navs and we started to create more from midfield.
Credit to the Support today with a good number making the long trip.
Love the North East. Great people and they love their football.
Back for the Crawley game but no need to moan.... Plenty of positives lads and lasses. Far fitter than Pool and you could see that last 15.

However, my fear is that his rants and blusterings, will eventually overshadow most, if not all, of the positives of his time in charge here.
The press/media will, slowly but surely, start to present him as a joke (he is already becoming a caricature of himself) and the situation will escalate to the point that his position at STFC is untenable and he WILL walk.
I hope that he starts to learn faster than currently seems to be the case, that he is an apprentice and that future, prospective employers won't want a "prima donna" manager, no matter how good he thinks he is.

Pressure, expectation and needs to realise all men are different and although they have passion, desire and all things good, their amounts and priorities differ. Saints or sinners ? time will decide, but will time allow PDC to complete his task here, time will tell..

Lucky man who fell in with a needy club, at exactly the right time, no wonder the likes of Fat Boy Evans who had toiled through the lower leagues to get to where they are were just blind jealous. He has been very lucky up till now with Wray, but this season and onwards things will be harder, a LOT harder, and he would do well to wind in his out bursts.
Some people on here need to remember that paolo has every right not to talk to the press. Maybe he wants to let the result sink in and not let raw emotion do the talking, seriously some of you being critical for this its pathetic, the press can be ruthless at the best of times especially in this country... Fair play to Paolo I say keep up the good work. Who wants some smooth talking media serf in charge, we have a genuine leader in paolo who is worthy of respect for the job he has done so far. Keep up the good work paolo!

Wizard, maybe by not talking to the press is his tactic rather than having an 'outburst' as you have pointed out. He's a passionate guy and he dosent tolerate prima donnas which is rare in todays game...for any club to be succesful you need backing from a board with ambition! It is early days and we have a busy 6 weeks ahead. Can't we all just get behind the team and PdC and urge them on?
There are always hundreds of managers and players and refs in the stands and on this forum but the truth is that it is PdC and our team and only 4 officials that count at every game. We have to accept their efforts, attitudes, approach and most importantly decisions. We can do no more but support the team as enthusiastically and as passionately as we can and be that 12th player.
Long season ahead and we can win this league. Let's be positive and strong and stop the negative vibe!

Im fairly surprised he's starting over the navarro/ferry pairing.
Need caddis back and another good striker brought in.,
btw portsmouth signing all those quality players when there finances are dire has **** us off (and potentially getting out of a 10 point deduction)

Yes, it was frustrating this afternoon and, yes, we were scrappy most of the time. We should have won (through the penalty or Collins' woeful attempt afterwards) but we could have lost (their header onto the post). Devera did ok but Ritchie is only half the player without Caddis, and I would prefer to se Roberts instead of Rafa (even though he works hard).
I, too, think PDC was wise not to speak to the press after the game. He was so charged up during the game and ranting at those on the bench everytime a pass went astray on the pitch) that any interview would probably have been embarrassing and incomprendable.

Something tells me that the penalty miss was playing on Paolo's mind, and that is why he rfused to provide an interview.
The inevitable question of Paul Caddis taking the pen would have risen and Paolo was not ready to face potential ridicule.
I just hope that Paolo is man enough to bring Paul Caddis back in, because we are a far better side with him on the right.

Speaking of being "Triumphant" etc, do you think that some if not many supporters have now become so accustomed to the ways of PDC and his passion, desire, ethic, expectations and so on that they the fans now expect the same as he, and anything less in his/their eyes is to a point failure ??
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything less than 3 points is not acceptable, every team has a poor game once in a while or there are circumstances around some results that are undeniable, but do some now expect to win every game ?
Me, I'll take the away draws and home wins equation and be grateful for that and anything else is a bonus.

Oi Den! wrote:Hi Den hope you are well ,i have heard that Caddis will be off to Ipswich a offer of 9000 k has been offerd also a bid from shefield u also the source of my imformation is 90% right most of the time.
A goalless draw away from home has to be a decent start. Dwelling on the missed penalty is crying over spilt milk. Penalties are missed. Open goals are missed. It's all part of the game's rich tapestry. For me, the big concern is over the Caddis situation. I don't now whether player and manager are close to a resolution or not - but I bl00dy hope they are. Unity is everything.
.
By the way SAPFan, what was that about the Hartlepool players not knowing what was going to hit them? I thought you'd have known better than to make a triumphalist statement like that before a game. Better stick to organising other people's predictions I reckon!

Blimey the way some fans are going on its as if we lost this game. Draws away and wins at home will put us in the mix at the end of the season and the season is over 46 games please remember. Yes we missed a penalty but we could have been 1-0 down by then with Howard's header hitting a post and we were under severe pressure in the early parts of the second half so held on to rally towards the end of the game. A good point from a tough long trip.

Let's see if these same people will now say the the same in the articles today from macca and Wes. Too many of theses hyper-critics who do not have anything worthwhile to say themselves just show to me their intolerance for other peoples point of view. They know who they are and it is sad to say they seem to get some adverse pleasure in being a troll.
Guess it's just best to ignore them and hope they go away especially if they don't know who they are.. lol

Oi Den,
You're "right on the money" once more.
Triumphalism? NOW there's a thing.
I'll save my comments till next May.
COYR
The weather here is breedin' OT, 34-37 degrees C over the last five days.
Much too hot for me, I tend to get a bit fractious when it's warmer than 25-27.
I prefer to be OT rather than cold though

Mondeaux,
Speaking of being "Triumphant" etc, do you think that some if not many supporters have now become so accustomed to the ways of PDC and his passion, desire, ethic, expectations and so on that they the fans now expect the same as he, and anything less in his/their eyes is to a point failure ??
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything less than 3 points is not acceptable, every team has a poor game once in a while or there are circumstances around some results that are undeniable, but do some now expect to win every game ?
Me, I'll take the away draws and home wins equation and be grateful for that and anything else is a bonus.
As Greavsie used to say, "It's a funny old game, Saint."
Management of fans expectations is never going to be easy and
there's (probably) no-one on the planet who has a real grasp of what is going on under the covers.
I'm with you, draw away, win at home that will do nicely.
